Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de
a.k.a. When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace

      alt text

Synopsis (from TVTropes): Six months ago, the four members of a literature club, as well as the elementary school niece of their club adviser, were bestowed with supernatural powers. Jurai Andou, the only male, became able to produce rather useless black flames. The girls also acquired a variety of powerful abilities: the bemused Tomoyo Kanzaki became a Time Master, the ditzy Hatoko Kushikawa gained Elemental Powers, Chifuyu Himeki, the youngest of the group, acquired the Power of Creation, and the aloof Sayumi Takanashi could repair objects or heal living things (though it's actually returning it to its original state). However, since they gained these powers, nothing has actually changed in their everyday life. Why have they been given these powers in the first place? Will the heroic fantasy life that Andou imagined these powers would bring ever actually arrive?

So here's another SBCreative LN that was adapted into an anime already. You may remember it because it was done by Studio TRIGGER and wondered why, of all things, they would do a school-life light novel adaptation. Or maybe you remember it for the absolutely epic anti-chuuni rant by Saori Hayami's character halfway through the show, quite possibly the single best segment of voice acting in all of anime history.

Whatever the case, I'd say the original LN is definitely worth getting into. What's notable is that, despite the supernatural powers the main characters have, it doesn't really lead them into resolving some grand plot; instead, it's more of a slice-of-life/character drama story, with the supernatural powers affecting how they relate to each other. At any rate the anime seemed to be popular enough for Sentai Filmworks to give it an English dub, so this would basically be another "check out the LN if you liked the anime!" title for the site, but I think it'll fit well with stuff like Neechuu, Little Apocalypse, and Rokujyoma, albeit more as a different take on supernaturally-enhanced school life.

This series isn't ongoing. It's complete at 13 volumes.

@terrence Thanks for the correction. Edited the first post accordingly.

(Guess that's another strike for LNDB on inaccurate completion statuses...)

@stardf29 More like outdated rather than inaccurate. Not many people are updating LNDB and my motivation is pretty low considering the lack of moderators and the MIA admin.

The anime for this one surprisingly features one of the best single scene voice acting performances for an actress. You know the scene if you watched the show.

This particular entry is inaccurate though, because the volume count is up to date at 13, but they kept it listed as ongoing. They would have had to just ignore that part when they updated.

I'm lazy, so I can see myself doing the same if I'm updating a bunch of LN volume counts at the same time or something and didn't do any research, but yeah.

I loved that anime, it away's made me feel better at the end of day, when my job sucked, I would love to see this get picked up.

I think this is one of the only titles I have requested twice on the seven seas survey , I had this has my #2 on J light novel clubs survey from last year. In fact i think i have asked every company for this twice.

I loved this anime, go figure how devastated I was when I found out no one was translating the novels, not even a fan-translation. Specially with that hint at a grand plot behind the scenes. And yes, that scene by Hayamin is probably the most memorable piece of voice acting of recent times.

Crunchyroll just shared that scene on FB so I'm sold just from that.

Oh yes the series where the main character has a garbage power and his friends have epic powers.

Stumbled across that scene on YouTube, then came here specifically to give it an upvote. :'>

The op summed up my thoughts perfectly! Also, it has great comedy, the characters interactions are really fun to watch and it should be one of the easier light novels to translate. Its really a shame that it never got neither a fan translation or an official one! Can you please consider picking it up?

It's less about being niche or not having a following and more that series like this just check the wrong boxes. It had an old anime but never got much attention after that. For example, look at other similar series that JNC has already published (had an old anime):

                                          • Demon King Daimao
                                          • Outbreak Company
                                          • Infinite Stratos
                                          • Kokoro Connect
                                          • Invaders of the Rokujouma
                                          • Full Metal Panic

Now, not all of these are flops exactly, but neither are they blowing up the world in sales or popularity. So you can understand that between a series that pretty much only has a minor nostalgia draw versus a newer series that's still trending in Japan/among fan circles and could get an anime sometime in the future, or one that just started that can catch up to the newest releases pretty quickly, it's hard to justify spending localization money on it when the ROI historically hasn't been great for series with similar circumstances.

Whoever said nothing's impossible never tried slamming a revolving door.

This one also has going for it that it's by an author JNC has licensed before (Slightly Older GF author iirc). Maybe they can become like Ichiro Sakaki if their newer stuff sells, and we get some of their back catalog. Not holding my breath though (and honestly, rather their newer stuff first before this at this point).
