[New Life+]’s Anime's Protagonist, Novel Creator Cause Controversy in China
-
Eh didn't an entire country based on China get blown off the map by a crystal gorrila in Smartphone? Why aren't they raging about it? Smartphone's author really made the people of that place sound like jerks didn't he? lol.
GATE's author is pretty nationalist as well mind you. He paints every other country as assholes lol.
And who are these China Chinese to criticize? They should read their own blasted novels, more than half of them are bloody nationalist and anti-japan and very open about it.
-
Well damn, this escalated... Is it possible for the anime to be yanked at this late stage? I wouldn’t rule that out at the moment...
-
As the comments say, probably, this much negative press and the entire cast pulling out is a pretty big deal. If they've contracted with any Chinese companies that have also pulled out, that would be worse. If they can replace everyone in short order, they could still pull it out, but this might be too big of a "controversy" that it scares away potential partners.
-
Damn shame that it escalated. Kind of pity the author for something that should have just been brushed aside as some dumbass tweeter's vendetta.
-
Wow, I can't believe it actually happened. Japan caved in to SJWs. We are doomed.
-
From the article (Bold is mine):
"With regard to the [New Life+] Young Again in Another World light novel series, MINE noted his "poor writing" and "rash remarks." As a result of recognizing the inappropriate content in his work, MINE will discontinue offering the novels on "Shōsetsuka ni Narō." He plans to discuss with the publisher about the possibility of correcting the relevant print versions of the novels..."
Good thing we're with J-Novel and epubs. There can be a 2.0 (and more) reversion of the novels. That said, I can't recall reading anything particularly nationalistic or objectionable. Hope that the Japanese native publisher does not overreact and void future volume translations.
@Sam-Pinansky Reminder question (as I think you have addressed this before). Should the publishing rights end for j-novel for a particular volume, my memory was that the downloaded version is still ours to keep and legal even if circumstances force the company to no longer offer a series for sale?
-
@alocervancouver That's right, no one is going to be deleting files off your devices.
-
@sam-pinansky What's your current feeling on this, do you think it will effect the possibility of future releases for J Novel club? that's obviously if you even still want to run the series.
I never really cared about the anime but have been enjoying the LNs so i feel it would be a shame if this had a detrimental effect.
-
Damn. I was enjoying this title. No more Loli-God.
Edit to add:
I'm feeling a strong sense of deja vu. Back in the 80's there was an author named John Norman that wrote a series of novels about life on a planet called Gor. Very sexist and mysoginistic. Eventually, public pressure mounted and his publisher pulled the plug.Don't get me wrong. These books were definitely controversial. I was in my 20's. I didn't care about the "social impact" of the stories. I guess censorship marches onward, and how bad things get depends on who you irritate.
-
You know, I may be mistaken on this. But I think one of the reasons this whole thing blew up is because Chinese companies have been investing in anime projects in recent years. They've been pouring a lot of money as investors. It makes sense if most of the people involved don't want to get on their bad side. Man, I really was looking forward to Nakajima and Yasuno's voice.
Anyway, this doesn't mean the novels will cease publishing... right?
-
@shrike_al
I'd imagine it'll continue in Japan, but the Chinese publisher may hold off on releasing more until this blows over. (if it's being released in Chinese)Edit:
Nevermind looks like they are suspending the series?
-
@village-idiot that's for the anime right?? Not the LNs right?? RIGHT???
I like this series a lot. We need more mature MCs in LNs.
-
Evidence seems to suggest the studio has cancelled the anime. I haven’t seen official word, however.
Edit: Yep, it’s cancelled. And maybe even the light novels too?
-
The saddest thing is that if the protaganist was a born American raised in Japan, no one would have batted an eyelid... -_-
-
Wow, this really exploded. Really disappointing. I like the series and was looking forward to the anime.
The update posted by Village Idiot seems to indicate the books are being pulled too, but that might just be Google Translate being dumb. At least, I hope it is.
-
Holy crap! Don't check the forum for a day and an anime I was looking forward to is canned.
-
I'd imagine if Hobby Japan's dropped the series, either they'll start it again after all this dies down or the author gets the license back and goes to another publisher after editing it.
-
Oh boy. Turns out the novels are... getting the short end of the stick too. Looks like the novels are also getting discontinued.
-
Sigh. I haven't followed the controversy, but this is ridiculous...
-
rip. Between three of this year's JNC animes this one had the most chances to be good, imo. Won't be surprised if it resurfaces few seasons later, though.

They certainly are, but the question is where "the pull" is on a scale between "burn them all" and "we'll restart with revised versions next month".
