Commentary: Coming from the author of several well-known titles in Japan such as Tasogare-iro no Uta Tsukai (黄昏色の詠使い), Hyouketsu Kyoukai no Eden (氷結鏡界のエデン), Imperfect Divine Arms Ilis (不完全神性機関イリス), S.I.R.E.N. (S.I.R.E.N.), Sekai no Owari no Encore (世界の終わりの世界録) and is also writing this series in conjunction with his other new series Naze Boku no Sekai wo Daremo Oboete Inai no ka?, is Kei Sazane with this new series.
A lot of people are reminded of Romeo and Juliet after reading the premise, and I wouldn't fault them. Two starcrossed lovers - but that's where the comparison ends. Iska and Aliceliese do not start off suddenly smitten with each other but are instead driven by their smoldering rivalry, which other characters or even themselves misconstrue into romantic interest.
The comedy is plentiful and abundant between the characters, brought about not by the prevalent boke-tsukkomi routine of comedy in most LNs but by their actual interactions giving way to abundant ribbing or misunderstandings. The action is pretty good with Iska and Aliceliese having to work to earn their victory despite the praises heaped on their strength or skill level.
And as with every Kei Sazane level, the worldbuilding plays an important part in the plot, the mystery involved and the ongoing conflict at large. His frequent use of foreshadowing is also present, as usual hinting at a world larger than what was initially featured and a conflict bigger than what the main characters initially perceive.
What makes a Kei Sazane work fun to read is still present in this series, and if you're looking for a fun romp that doesn't overly make use of contemporary tropes, a fantastical world waiting to be explored and characters you'd just want to sit down and have a good time with while looking for that romcom approach, I'd highly suggest this one.

@hemsicle I actually am very interested in this one. Got my upvote.
-
I remember seeing this on the top releases of the week in japan and being super interested in it.
A random fun fact is the illustrator is the same one for Battle Divas and the one who switched in after Himesuz for Isekai Mahou.

This one was up there on Bookwalker's "New Light Novel General Election" vote (you can actually get 50% off volume 1 for a limited time until the 31st with coupon code n50). Finished 3rd.

I read the first fan-translated chapter and it was good. I'd read any of the works by this author because they all seem interesting. Hopefully one of them will be licensed eventually.
-
A perfect licensing candidate: a JNC translator (Hikoki) already translated the first volume, and the JNC community member who fan translated Elf Bride (later sniped by Hikoki for the official JNC translation) is doing volume 2! It's practically already a JNC series :P

Here's a Read This! post u/AnokataX made about this series on r/Lightnovels.
-
@falcade I only just made an account on here, but I just wanted to thank you for linking my Read This! post :) Hope it brings more fans to this awesome series.
-
This is my dream. I really hope it gets licensed. IMO it is composed of things that would sell great - Julliet & Romeo vibes, magic society vs a knowledge based society, fantasy.
High hopes for this one, yet I think we all know its not licensed yet because of its label "Fujimi Fantasia Bunko"...
Hopefully in the future.

J-Novel Club is already publishing a book from Fujimi Fantasia Bunko though... Amagi Brilliant Park.
-
Go go, JNC, time to license this we see.
-
@guspaz
Yes, but the fujimi fantasia bunko is a label with lots of LN's that we couldnt break through. Untill this summer it was pretty much JP exclusive.JNC managed to get Amagi and YP the isekai mom one. Those are the only 2 titels from the label, a label that has the rights to Date a live, Akashic records and many more fan favorits. We got something, but its nothing huge.
-
@happy The mom one was from Yen Press I believe.
I still think there's a fair chance of more stuff from Fantasia Bunko. Sam said in discord not too long ago that he had a meeting with Fujimi Shobo (and this was after Amaburi).

Yes you are indeed right about that, gotta edit that one.

Is the discord for everybody or members only kind of thing? I've seen it mentioned everywhere. And those are some great news, hopefully we'll get more titels from them :D

Thanks. Semi related, but does anyone have any links to how this one scored in polls? I saw a post that said it was high on several polls but only ever saw the poll up there commented by one person.
How well is it doing in Japan?
