@moredinosaurs (and anyone who's wondering why the art for the episode 4 endcard looks vaguely familiar)
Fun fact: Episode 4's endcard is drawn by Iida Seriko, the artist of Sweet Reincarnation (which JNC has the manga of).
I guess other artists of TO Books titles will do the other endcards?
-
@doublemangekyo I don’t see any connection between the stories tbh...

Main might be the right way to write Myne name. I was reading the manga vol 2 chapter 1 page 17 and noticed that what Otto wrote on the slate looked like Main spelt backwards.
-
-
@renofury The author herself chose "Myne" as the correct romanization. What likely happened is that the mangaka indepedently decided to make the fake script look like English and based it on the literal romaji of her katakana name and didn't check with the author if that was acceptable or accurate.

The mangaka just followed the lead of the LN illustrator because there was an illustration of the slate in LN volume 1. The rest of what you said may still apply though.

IIRC, the author based her name off the word "Main", but pronounced it as one would if that was kana-ized literally. The author "chose" Myne after this problem was addressed to her by English translators (when the LN was already ~20 volumes long), but Light Novel and Manga illustrations (as well as the anime) show letters that clearly correspond to "M-A-I-N".
Crunchyroll used Myne for the first episode to stay consistent with the Light Novel, but looks like by Episode 2 they actually noticed how the slate used M-A-I-N and realized the reasoning for her name on their own, and figured the fact Characters already pronounced her name as they did, there wasn't a need for a compromise (which was what "Myne" was)

It's not a compromise when it's the official English spelling.
Regardless of the original intentions or motivations, "Myne" is now what her name is. If they're ignoring the English books, that's one thing, but if they know her name is spelled "Myne" in the books and deliberately choose to depart from that, that's just silly.
It's the same as any other anime adaptation where the source material has already been officially released in English - if any character names aren't spelled the way they are in the source, that is a point of discontent for fans, moreso when it's the main character's name.

@lurkingmclurk and @myskaros thanks for the info didn't know about that and found it really intesting

I really wish the actual Japanese publisher would step in and correct the whole name issue especially since it could cause problems down the road. For example if the character has two names and someone wishes to purchase merchandise featuring them which name should they search for.
-
@eternal-wanderer Welcome to FMP where there has been merch for Tessa with her first name as Teletha and Teresa. Iirc it is spelled as Teresa in the 2nd Raid OVA as well.

Author fully explains the origin of the name of the main character and the issue of English spelling here.

She is describing word playing she did in Japanese so it is a little tricky to translate but let me give it a shot. When I refer to name like (Myne) or (Tuuli), read those as their original Japanese representation and forget about its English spelling. I heavily annotated the original statement to make it somehow understandable without any Japanese knowledge. My annotations are in italic.
Mr Quof asked for my advice regarding the spelling of マイン(Myne) and トゥーリ(Tuuli).
Actually, the origin of the name of (Myne) is rather complicated. It comes from her Japanese name "本須麗乃"(Moto-su Ura-no). That name is made from the phrase "本は須らく、うらのである” .
本は (Hon-wa: Books are)
須らく (Subekaraku: in all cases)
うら の である (Ura-no-dearu: is possession of I)本(Hon) of 本は(Hon-wa) also carry the sound “Moto”
須(Subeka) of 須らく(Subeka-raku) also carry the sound “Su”. Thus makes her family name 本須(moto-su).Author then translate this to modern Japanese: 本は当然私の物である, which means "Books are naturally of my possession."
うら(Ura) is an ancient Japanese word for first person. Adding possession article “の” makes it うらの“possession of I”. The kanji 麗乃 is what we call “ateji”(当て字), that it just pronounced the same but the meaning of the characters are completely different. Those are just chosen because they look nice as a girl’s name.
From this original Japanese meaning, I played word games like this:
“Ura-no = Possession of I” (Japanese)
-> English word “mine” (by the meaning)
-> German word “main” (by the sound similar to English mine, and means “Main Character”)Then put back into Japanese as マイン(ma-i-n) as that is the alphabetic representation of the Japanese pronunciation.
It is word play in Japanese so it would be very difficult to understand by western readers, and those words in English or German cannot be used as names as is.
So Mr. Quof presented me with alternative spellings with same pronunciation and I chose “Myne” from them.

It’s true the voice actors seem to give her name 2 syllables for the pronunciation, like
My-een
, so in addition to the chalkboard, I can see why it was changed. Also I very much doubt Crunchyroll has the authority to play around with the romanizations of the different names they subtitle, so there must have been some miscommunication between TO-Books and the anime production committee, which is who CR is in contact with. For My Daughter also had numerous name differences from JNC’s translation, so this is nothing new. -

That's just because there's no way to cleanly say "mine" in Japanese. It has to be combined from "ma" and "i" (long 'e'), and if the director isn't being strict about it, the voice actors might just read it like they would any other instance of "ai" in Japanese, by enunciating each vowel sound.
-
Even if the voice actors pronunciation is in question I still think what they are saying sounds a lot more like Myne than Main.
-
@eternal-wanderer Effa and Tulli voice actors says it as ma-in, however before reaching a conclusion I want to wait for Benno scolding Myne.
The pace is not fast as I had imagined, by this point I thought for sure Otto would have introduced Benno to Lutz and Myne. Its puzzling that they opted to start the show with Ferdinand as it seems he will barely if any have any screen time this season. -

They needed a narrator to give information of the previous show at the beginning, and chose his voice to do so. Also having fun at the end to inject a little information on what's coming with chibi High Priest and chibi Myne.
That beginning was a good way to introduce this mystery character as somebody who is concerned of Myne and look after her, at the cost of giving up a little spoiling information.
-
I do like how they change the art style for characters that are using shampoo vs those that don’t.
-
So 5 episodes in and there’s still a couple more scenes before they finish adapting volume 1. I wonder if they’ll keep this pace or start speeding up.
-
@legitpancake
Not sure if they can really speed up that much. Without divulging enough details to classify as spoilers I can already think up the next 7 episodes and these cover important plot points.- Interview
