Seven Seas - February 2020 survey available!

If you have any Yuri license suggestions, may want to hold off on them until after Wednesday of next week.

  • I’d rather Seven Seas license more Ghost Ship titles at the moment instead, since that imprint is still underwhelming and grossly neglected in terms of actual number of titles licensed under the mature imprint. What is the point of Ghost Ship if Seven Seas aren’t acquiring enough mature titles to at least keep up with their main catalogue? A sporadic license announcement or two whenever the mood strikes them is not a good reflection on an imprint Seven Seas themselves were enthusiastic about at first, but has clearly waned overtime. I’ve bought almost all their Ghost Ship titles along with titles from their main catalogue, so I’m not one-dimensional when it comes to what I purchase from them, but I’d prefer if Ghost Ship received more attention in the future.

  • @terrence oh this is tomorrow already huh

What time do they usually announce this so I can keep an eye out? I don't think I have any that I want but I might be interested in the new stuff they'll announce

Just started. There will be another license announced in mere minutes.

Here's the first license announced. Yuri manga that's a period piece.

Yay, a non-fantasy, romance light novel! I'll definitely give it a try. It sounds good.

  • @terrence ooh now I'm putting this in my 'to-read list'

I'm in the mood for Death Game stuff (it is October coming up). Tempted to ask for some on the still up September survey. Definitely will ask for some on the October survey.

    Right now, I got.

    Manga:

Gather! Mystery Research Club / Atsumare! Fushigi Kenkyuubu

Private Punishment Game / Rinchi gēmu

    LN:

Sokushi Cheat ga Saikyou Sugite, Isekai no Yatsura ga Marude Aite ni Naranai n desu ga.

Love Comedy That The Childhood Friend Never Loses / Osananajimi ga Zettai ni Makenai Romcom

    October survey is up.

  • Since the last survey in September, Seven Seas has announced a meagre two Ghost Ship licenses. Two! Then Seven Seas believes their Ghost Ship imprint is “ever-expanding”?! Was that supposed to be a joke? Because I’m only hearing crickets! If Seven Seas aim to “expand” Ghost Ship, then, for the next few months, Seven Seas would need to hold a separate licensing announcement exclusively for Ghost Ship titles. Random announcements whenever the mood strikes them doesn’t cut it! Seven Seas need to establish Ghost Ship as a brand, instead of the side-project it appears to be.

Now, I’ve been filling out these surveys for a while and I’ve never noticed any questions that let us speak for ourselves, instead, being forced to tick answers that, often at times, don’t represent how people actually feel, neither are any of their answers critical of them, or carry any actual weight. In addition, if Ghost Ship is “ever-expanding”, there should be questions frequently regarding them as there is for Seven Seas. We’re never asked what manga/light novel we would like Ghost Ship to license.

    Rant over!

    Also, LMAO:

But please only suggest NEW licenses for us (i.e. we haven't already published some volumes of the series)

    RIP Boogiepop, Lodoss War, etc.

Wow. Didn't they previously tell us to ask for more Boogiepop in surveys?

(It never made any sense to me since buying volumes of the series seemed like a better way to send a message than a survey response, but yeah, I remember them saying something to that effect).

    .

Anyone got a list of all the categories for this survey?

@terrence said in Seven Seas - November/December 2019 survey available!:

Didn't they previously tell us to ask for more Boogiepop in surveys?

Pretty sure they said to buy more Boogiepop.

  • Premium Member

They said to buy it in later posts, but they also said to request it previously.

"We licensed and released BOOGIEPOP Light Novels 1-6, so our set is complete (for now), but feel free to suggest more licenses--Boogiepop or otherwise--in our monthly survey. This is a similar situation to Lodoss War, where we started with a license for only early volume(s). --LS"

  • Here's what I ended up submitting:

Fantasy or Isekai manga: Magdala de Nemure - 4-volume adaptation of a LN by Isuna Hasekura (Spice & Wolf)
Fantasy or Isekai LN: Maoyuu Maou Yuusha - by Mamare Touno (Log Horizon)
Comedy, Drama or SoL manga: The Comic Artist and His Assistants - by Hiroyuki (Aho-Girl)
Comedy, Drama or SoL LN: Oda Nobuna no Yabou
Action, Horror or Supernatural manga: Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro - by Yusei Matsui (Assassination Classroom)
Action, Horror or Supernatural LN: Shakugan no Shana
    Ecchi or Fan-service manga: Inumimi
Ecchi or Fan-service LN: Lord Marksman and Vanadis
Classic manga: Shaman King - started in '98, so it counts. Kodansha isn't doing anything with it and I want the Kanzenban edition.
Classic LN: none... - I almost put in Slayers, but it's too long and I'd rather JNC get it.

Nothing for Yuri/Yaoi/LGBT cause I just don't care about those.

Just gonna say, y'all might want to wait until after JNC announces their licenses at Anime NYC before making survey submissions.

  • I mean, it's not like I'm actually expecting SS to get those or anything.
If JNC does end up getting something from my list, well, there will be other surveys next year.

  • Premium Member

It's definitely smarter to wait, especially since the survey lasts through December, but I'm probably not going to wait this time.

Especially not going to hold my breath on seeing if any horror or real world drama stuff gets announced by JNC or others later this month. T_T

Stuff like Ideal Sponger Life, Shield Heroine, or Alderamin I might regret requesting if they show up later.

  • Considering my opinion of them as publishers has soured following each recent announcement, I’ll still fill their survey just to prove my point that Seven Seas only licenses whatever Seven Seas wants.

Also, Seven Seas needs to be more realistic in their surveys. Offering us an illusion of licensing whatever we want regardless of Japanese publisher, the cost of licensing, availability of said license, age of said license, length of said license, etc., is absolutely unreasonable. Seven Seas should declare what they can and can’t license and who they can’t license from to avoid disappointing anyone. But I guess being open and honest isn’t an incentive to fill out a survey.
