Realist Hero might only be getting 13 episodes based on the Bluray listing.

Arguably you'd want to fit Vols 1-4 into 1 season since it concludes the Elfrieden rebuilding/Amidonia cleanup arc, but is 13 episodes too tight a fit?

Glad we were able to see at least a few minutes of best girl Roroa. :)

Pretty good start even if a bit rushed - let's see how it goes as things really begin to unfold.

So Episode 2 of Realist Hero bugged me a lot. If you follow the part where Souma tells Liscia that he's going to use the broadcast jewel to recruit talent, he says "he'll take the words of a great hero he respects". The light novel has Souma say "great man...a crafty hero in a troubled land" and ends it at that. We don't know who it's reference too.

However, the anime changes it to "great hero he respects. An unscrupulous hero one from chaotic times" and then directly states it's Cao Cao from the 3 Kingdoms of Chinese lore who Souma's talking about. I'm wondering why the anime did this because the novel does not mention anywhere of Cao Cao, and I don't think J-Novel Club has released author interviews. So I'm a bit surprised. But maybe it's an Asian thing where they are able to read context in between the lines.

Pardon my ignorance, I was under the impression that Blu Ray would post after a season is confirmed- and I think it's too early to know if Realist will be getting a 2nd + season (or are you saying there isn't any OVA content?)

That aside - yea throgh the 4th volume of tyhe LN would be a good stopping point- they're going to have to compress some of the plot/intrigue

I think it was added to help us poor 'Mericuns and others ignorant to non-European history. (And didn't detract from the story IMHO) I vaguely recall reading about Cao Cao somewhere (Ragnarok?) but would not get the reference from context in the anime unless they spelled it out like they did (but I bet Japanese middle schoolers and older would) In the same vein I wouldn't expect folks outside of the USA to have more than a passing familiarity with quotes by Patrick Henry or Lou Gehrig or the differences between the statements of Susan B. Anthony vs. Jane Adams...whereas some quotes so permeate media that they are global (Machiavelli, Lincoln, Lao Tzu, etc.)

When I heard Cao Cao being mentioned my first thought was, since I didn't remember exactly what Souma said in the novel but I remember never reading a reference to Cao Cao, that they changed a quote from Machiavelli to one more familiar for Japanese viewers.

I wouldn't read too much into it. They could have asked the author to expand the reference, the author might have been heavily involved in the script writing, etc.

I think the point is that the anime has only been bankrolled for 13 episodes, so any sequel will likely be dependent on how well it performs. This would be different from series where it's planned to be 26 episodes from the outset.

The crafty hero line in the novel is a translation of 乱世の奸雄, which does always refer to Cao Cao, who was told he would be "a good subject in peaceful times; a crafty hero in a troubled land."

The original text doesn’t give his name, and I didn't really expect readers to get the reference if it wasn't made explicit.

There was some consideration given to making the connection, but I also thought that might be too much hand-holding. It’s Chinese history, not Japanese, after all.

At the time, googling "a crafty hero in a troubled land" would have gotten you the reference, so we decided to go with that.

Ah, so that's why they changed the order of the gifts. Got to have that episode-ending cliffhanger... Also, it was great to hear Hakuya say out loud just how much of his respect Souma got for publicly praising Poncho and offering him a high-ranking job on the spot. Poncho's a great guy and I love how he gets treated with respect by the other characters in the LNs, and I can see it'll be the same in the anime. And that makes me very happy.

...Can't wait to see the first time he becomes the Kitchen Ghost.

My grasp on sanity remains absolute.

Oh, right, the poison, the poison for Kuzco, the poison chosen especially to kill Kuzco, Kuzco's poison. ...That poison?

Based on the pacing of the first four episodes, I'd expect them to really only cover the first two volumes. They also seem to be relying on cliff hanger endings, which may suggest they've intentionally misaligned stories to episodes allowing them to end the first volume in the middle of an episode (i.e. episode 7). And hopefully that announced casting of the two Euphoria sisters is just for a bit part at the end of the season and/or a gambled second season where they do have a meaningful presence.

?!? I'm just outside of Chicago, and have access. How are you trying to watch? it's streaming on both Funimation and Hulu.

@jon-mitchell Go to crunchroll site, search for series, click on series, got message. I've been finding that where ever Google maps says I'm at, that's what companies who guess your location use, too.

Google says my IP is located as far east as Woburn, IN, and often in Naperville, Geneva, Northbrook, and downtown Chicago. About 30% of the time, it places me within a mile of my house. Which is weird, because I'm on a fixed business IP, rather than dynamic.

Ah, well, I'm willing to wait until they decide to sell it. I'm not much for streaming video anyway.

It isn't your location (other than being in the USA) that is preventing you from watching- Crunchyroll isn't paying to broadcast this title in the USA (I don't know if Funimation outbid them or CR just chose to spend money on other things vs. licensing the broadcast rights for the USA) Regardless, like I said, it's on Funimation and Hulu. CR didn't license it in the USA. Not to go off too far on a tangent...but all the services have their limitations, and the landscape is likely to change more soon (Sony, Funimation's corporate parent put in a bid to buy CR from AT&T/Time Warner, I'm a cynic, so I don't believe that this will lead to more anime for less $$- but I can see how CR would choose to not get this title - save the capitol for the upcoming merger and al that) I do not know if Realist Hero is available on the "free with ads" offering on Funimation

That aside--- Episode 4 something I noticed that I found somewhat jarring- The soon to be king calls for talented people from every walk of life, and the only 4 we see are the folks destined to be featured ?? Lazy on the part of the animators. There should've been a crowd; dozens, or even hundreds of people shown that responded to the call (vs the hand wave that these four we're the most 'outstanding' ---Souma hadn't determined that yet (in the anime)! they just didn't want to animate the scene? (heck it could've been a 'bump' coming into/out of a commercial break)

other than that - I'm enjoying it

@someoldguy Realist Hero is a Funimation show, not Crunchyroll. CR may be streaming it in some European countries or something, but not NA.

@jon-mitchell The gripe was that it wasn't on CR. Now that I know why, there's no gripe.

Well, I'm still not happy with Funimation and Hulu streaming for a variety of reasons, but those are not relevant in this topic.

Hmm. So we have 13 episodes, and we know that Volume 1 of the LN is going to take at least 5 of them. Can someone remind me if the Dark Elf Village Rescue was in V1 or V2?

I like how it's going thus far, so I really hope it gets a second season. They're doing a lot of cliffhangers, but it's a fairly solid adaptation in my opinion.
