@Drone205 suggested in my thread about light novels that would appeal to women that he had some thoughts on native English works he'd like to toss out. I thought it would be best to discuss those non-translated works here.
So sir, whatcha got? :-)

There are currently two books I am reading right now, Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff and Fatespinner by S.K. Aetherphoxx. I am currently reading them, not completed so this is from what I have read so far or remembered reading since I have read Stormdancer over a year ago but kinda stopped for some reason so I am re-reading it.
Whisper is the main character in Fatespinner and she is quite unique, or as unique as any character can get. Whisper is powerful and a bit of a badass but that is not all there is to her. she has her own problems and insecurities. I find it hard to explain her so I will just make a comparison to another character from another series. Guts from Berserk is not just a brooding anti-hero but a real breathing human. it is very similar for Whisper from where I am at in the book so far. There are also other really good Female characters in this but So far Whisper is the one we spend the most time on.
Fatespinner Sysnopsis
Nestled safely on another plane of existence is The Weave – a structure of epic proportion housing an infinite network of silk webs that spin the destinies of man. Four powerful mortals worshiped as Fates watch, predict, and manipulate the destinies to ensure the world is always in balance, but one has grown weary of her omniscience. If she were to collapse The Weave she would feel the joy of the unknown once more and defects to pursue her cause. With the help of legendary allies and an artifact of ancient power, perhaps she can free the people of the world from their predetermined inevitability and restore the truest of free will.
But where does one stand in a war of liberty versus law? What do we sacrifice for our convictions, and is the volatile beauty of freedom better than the safety of organized government? Worse yet, what happens when the demons of the night catch wind of a war that could give them free reign? Something hungers beyond the mist of the world, and this may be the chance they have been waiting for.
Yukiko from Stormdancer will be harder since this is the one I have read over a year ago and started to re-read it. I am only finished chapter 3 so far but I remember Yukiko was such an interesting character, she had to be since she was the lead character. And I think there will be a very interesting relationship with her and a griffon or an arashitora. This one pretty much takes place in a Steampunk Japan.
Stormdancer Sysnopsis
Stormdancer is the first in the epic new fantasy series The Lotus War, introducing an unforgettable heroine and a stunningly original dystopian steampunk world with a flavor of feudal Japan
The Shima Imperium verges on the brink of environmental collapse; an island nation once rich in tradition and myth, now decimated by clockwork industrialization and the machine-worshipers of the Lotus Guild. When hunters of Shima's imperial court are charged by their Shogun to capture a legendary griffin, they fear their lives are over. Any fool knows the beasts have been extinct for more than a century, and the price of failing the Shogun is death. Accompanying her father on the Shogun's hunt, the girl Yukiko finds herself stranded: a young woman alone in Shima's last wilderness, with only a furious, crippled griffin for company. Even though she can hear his thoughts, even though she saved his life, all she knows for certain is he'd rather see her dead than help her. But together, the pair will form an indomitable friendship, and rise to challenge the might of an empire.

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, 3 books in the first series.
Vin is a poor young girl who's being exploited as a scam artist when she's found by the legendary Mistborn Kelsier. He discovers that she's also a Mistborn, someone capable of using all the allomantic powers, and decides to adopt her into his gang of misfits aiming to take down the tyrannical, immortal Lord Ruler, who took over the Final Empire hundreds of years ago after a hero failed to save the world. As Vin and the gang gather the pieces to execute their daring plan, they also discover shocking secrets surrounding the darkness of the empire that will eventually change the course of history.
There's a second series known unofficially as Wax & Wayne that takes place a few hundred years after Mistborn that's still ongoing (4 books out so far), and Sanderson's plan is for there to be a 3rd series that takes place in the far future of the same world as well. Wonderful books, I really enjoy Sanderson's works :3
