      Why isn't the art inside the light novels colored? It shouldn't be difficult for them to do it, and I find it highly unlikely that the original art wasn't done with color.

        Because printing a book with color images interspersed among text pages is extremely expensive, unlike if the inserts are black and white and can be printed on the same paper as the text pages. So yes, the original art is black and white, not in color.

          @SomeBSDeity Just as myskaros mentioned, the originals are in black and white. You can hit up plenty of light novel wikis that have scans of the art in the Japanese books and you'll find it's all black and white except for the inserts at the front of the book.

            Or looking through the previews for the Japanese editions on Bookwalker; what we see with the English editions matches what shows with the Japanese editions.

              Well..since the anime adaptation of Endo and Kobayashi Live! The Latest on Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte ED uses colorized version of the insert illustrations for the LN, there is theoretically a way you could have full color illustrations throughout; it just take patience, skill, and a buttload of time & coding

              You have take screenshots of the colorized illustrations from the ED the anime, resize them to be the proper size, and then recode the EPUB of the LN to replace the black and white illustrations with the colorized ones.
              It is possible in theory, but like the saying goes, it would be like digging a trench with a toothbrush

                @Lily-Garden Except for the fact that we don't have the rights to those colorized versions...

                Rule of thumb: if it's not in the Japanese edition of the book, the license does not include the rights to it. In theory we could negotiate with the anime production committee for usage of that color version but they don't have time to negotiate single image usage rights...

                  Negotiating with an anime production committee sounds expensive

                    @admin yes, I should have made that clear,
                    in my mind I was thinking of @SomeBSDeity personally recoding their personal copy...though that had its own implications...

                    Personally I thought of it mainly as an interesting thought experiment; theoretically possible but practically very unlikely due various challenges and obstacles
                    Hence my use of the saying "digging a trench with a toothbrush"

                      @Lily-Garden JNC history trivia question:
                      There was, in fact, one time we considered releasing (in some way) a colorized version of an originally black and white insert illustration from a light novel in an official capacity. What was it?

                        @admin I don't know,
                        What is the answer?

                          like instruct some AI to colorize B/W images based upon other images that happen to be in color? I suppose it's theoretically possible- from a liability/legal perspective -treading on thin ice

                          maybe (original) fan-art could be posted in a forum (or linked to in a forum) but I doubt JNC would, in any official capacity, try to sell derivative works of copy-written material. After all, they want to be able to license stuff in the future, doing anything the original Japanese publishers/content creators find irksome or even annoying to would be counterproductive (and potentially expensive)
