Villainess Level 99 - Anime Discussion
-
At the end of episode 2, we got to see the ending credits for the first time. And it's extremely Eleanora-focused, and that made me so giddy. The ending credits were amazing. And completely spoil that Yumiella and Eleanora will become buddies. And we haven't even met Eleanora in the anime yet. And she's supposed to appear like a villain at her first appearance (she's actually one of the villainesses in the game, right?) So now the anime-only folks are going to know she'll be redeemed before we even meet her.

Huh. Didn't know this had an anime. What sort of pace is it hitting, relative to the novels?

Well, there are only two episodes out so far, but episode 2 ended shortly after Yumiella demonstrated her black hole spell to everyone. So, I guess about 10% of volume 1 in two episodes?
But that’s misleading, because
What the pacing will be like going forward is hard to say, but it wouldn’t be too far off to say that episode two starts from the point where the LN starts and covers about 10% of volume one, and episode one is essentially all new content.
I expect them to do volume one in 12 episodes, then stop.
-
@b-scot-morgan I must say 1st episode was masterpiece. They managed to do introduction to characters and setting in very simple to understand and elegant way.
-
I'll pile in on the praise for episode 1. Even knowing it had to be a fake-out I still couldn't help but keep wondering when are they actually gonna flip the switch here, have I accidentally watched the wrong thing?
It's interesting seeing the Yumiella portrayal so far, she's almost a completely different character to the one we have now in LN volume 4, but I feel like she's quite a bit different to LN 1 Yumiella too. It's working well for the first 2 episodes though, so I'm not opposed to things continuing this way. Probably helps that she's had like 2 major personality swings throughout the novels already so there's no single "correct" way to expect her to be portrayed anyway.

@TheWickerMan
My impression so far is that the anime is following the manga version more than the LN version. The overall plotline is the same, but there are definitely differences between them. Some subtle, some not. -
@b-scot-morgan Ah makes sense, I think people have commented before on WN->LN changes, so maybe the author has been iteratively refining it with each new version. Which means this should be the best one yet!
Right..? -
@TheWickerMan
I mean...maybe? Personally, I really like the manga version so far, and I'm loving the anime so far, too. But I enjoy the LN, too. So, I don't worry too much about which version is best and just enjoy the entire Yumiella multiverse. :-) -
Volume 4 of the light novel just ended in pre-pub. There were comments from the author in the afterword about the differences between the light novel and the manga and how they thought the manga turned out better for the early part of the story. Thus it makes a lot of sense that the anime would follow that instead since the author liked it better. It also leaves the impression that the author is willing to make changes to improve the story because they felt like too much of an amateur when they first started on it, which means they could try again to improve the story further than the manga did in the anime.
One of the things specifically mentioned was that Alicia was a better character in the manga than in the light novel.
-
I didn't really appreciate the episode one trick, but maybe that's because I only know the LN version of the characters and LN-Alicia is (vol. 1 spoilers)
They spent 8 minutes on her that could have been spent on the real characters.
The rest of the anime is gold so far, though.
(And on the bright side, maybe Alicia will be a real character this time around. Here's hoping!)

@kuali at first I was going to say that I found it amusing that Yumiella doesn't see Alicia as an amorphous white blob, but then I remembered Alicia is only level 1 at this point...
-
Yeah, Alicia is definitely the most striking difference between the LN and manga. At this point in the manga
-
Wait, isn't this normal, though?
The question Yumiella will never get to stop asking herself...
Oh, the proposal! I'd forgotten about that proposal 🤣
sigh I miss the days Yumiella was that smart.
she already reigns supreme over all the girls in the academy.
Its the Rule of Drillhair - the person with the most full turns per drill has the highest social status, no matter how obsessed with croquettes they might be.
Eleanora: bird noises 😁
So, we're about three scenes into Chapter 2 (of 7) and at a rough guess, we really are doing the full cour on Volume 1. To be fair, one of the criticisms of the original first book was:

Also, I love this story, but I do have one complaint. It frequently lacks detail/elaboration. While all the events are great, they're often sort of skimmed over.
So its probably not that surprising that the anime is padding scenes out again rather than cutting things down further!
-
Volume 1 Yumiella is best Yumiella (though I'd say her decline starts right about the time Ryuu hatches), so no complaints from me if they spend the whole season on volume 1.
-
Did anyone else watching episode three get the feeling they were playing animal crossing from the background music?
-
..is it just me, or did Alicia get a lot more willing to ask before jumping to conclusions than in the LN?

It's not just you. See https://forums.j-novel.club/post/334528

Well, her communication skills are level 99, if nothing else.
...Sadly, the same isn't true of the Capture Targets...
Ed: State Secrets! To be shared only with my closest associates and any cute girl I've known for a few days!
All students: Stunned and lightly traumatized by Yumiella's levelling technique
Yumiella: Yep. Nailed it!Yumiella: "Did you see anything?"
Patrick: "No Ma'am! I didn't see you trying to play with a cat again!"Ed: "Oh, I knew Yumiella isn't the Demon Lord. Like fuck was I going to defend a woman I knew to be innocent from false accusations levied by two of my close personal friends, though!"
By my count, that was 8 sugars Ronald took in his tea...
Patrick: "I'm Patrick Ashbatten."
Yumiella: "...I didn't ask. Anyway, levelling up..."Patrick: "Wait, don't..."
Yumiella: "I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you over the noise of the Great Idea I was acting on multiple times!" -

Been awhile since I read the manga, is Ronald secretly the Bug from Men In Black?
It's nice to see Best Boy Patrick arrive to play the straight man.
