Why not start a Kickstarter campaign? If everyone who keeps talking starts putting their money out instead of their words we might get somewhere.

@sutatenken I’d be happy to put in some money, but as of now there is nothing to donate to. If I were to pay, I’d be paying for something they don’t hold the license to. They could raise $100k and still get told no when trying to get the license.

Okay, then let's kickstart all 30 volume!! You'd just need to raise, like, $100K+. That's not even close to a sure thing. -
I would also really like to see this get licensed as it was the series that got me into light novels. I've read the fan translation a good 10 times. And would definitely read it again if j-novel picked it up I've been following amabrill and love that too. There are several older more ecchi school battle series I would like to see. I've been happy to see series like IS and Daimou as well.

@sam-pinansky 30 Volumes times 500 supporters, each 20$ so 10k per volume and 300k total. Is there profit calculated in there considering translation cost, marketing and licensing fees?
If so then couldn't we make this appealing by considering every donation above 25$ a (potential, given that it works out) pre-order for volume one, and each 5$ more another volume? Basically a VERY early adopter discount of 1$ per volume, knowing that it might take forever to get there. there should be absolutely no risk for JNC if the minimum number of sales is covered in advance.

You'd be lucky to get $3,000 for a DxD light novel kickstarter, let alone $300,000
At $20 per volume, times 30 volumes, you'd need every person involved in the kickstarter to pay $600 minimum. I think such a kickstarter would get zero backers.

there are a couple of sites that are translating the light novels already. They are free and good translations. they are already at the sequel series of dxd

If the fan-translations start pushing for readers to buy the official version to compare, at least some of the readers will. Otherwise, I'd say it really depends on the series. For example, if Kino no Tabi was made available properly, I'd definitely buy the English version. I bought both the JP and EN version of GGO due to liking the author's works.
Some fan-translations will push for the official (some will even voluntarily start taking down their translations as the official version comes out). Think of it sort of like pre-pub vs premium ebook in that sense.
I think the problem with DxD is whether or not the bonuses will push people to buy it since I know there is at least one publisher that isn't really friendly with bonuses. You'll definitely have a few buyers, but the question is more 'will there be enough'. Unlike how a fan-translation group can pick up a volume, see if there is enough interest, and drop it if there isn't, JNC can't realistically go: Ok, we'll license one volume, see how it does, and if it doesn't sell, we'll renegotiate the license so another company can pick it up from the start.
I mean, they could, but they aren't really set up for that kind of thing.

For everyone questioning how well it would sell because of the fan translation look at How Not to Summon a Demon Lord which has a much better fan translation available than DxD has that is practically caught up but as far as I know hasn't done much to interfere with sales.

Another potential issue with a DxD translation - the sub and dub of the show have very different tones (and translation conventions). If you’re trying to get fans to the show to buy the books, and not just LN fans,, pleasing both groups would be difficult.

That's like literally the last issue to worry about, it's really not something that makes or breaks the deal for tv-show watchers.

@hamsterexastris I agree that what Funimation did with the dub is pretty much immaterial to anyone who would be inclined to read the books. The manga translation is closer to the subtitles than the dub, as well.
The dub was so irritating to me that I have two copies of each episode for viewing on my tablet - subtitled and dubbed, and which I watch depends my mood. Usually it's the sub, where Isei isn't quite the pig he is in the dub.
