Arifureta anime
-
@ares I've read both and seen both. Ragnarok was an industrial sized dumpster fire. Arifureta is, at the moment, about the same level as Smartphone's anime
-
Here's my episode 2 comparison for anyone interested.
-
It took them 3 episodes to get the story straight? LOL
They've should have done what Kumo manga did, focus only on one aspect of the story at the beginning and expand on it later. For example, focus only on Hajime from the point he fell down, no flash backs and explain his circumstances properly after he met with Yue. With proper flash back that takes in account his school life, his other world life and how he fell down.
@aruseus493 good post. The notion of stats is never really mentioned after they obtain first magic and get enormous stat boost. I think it was mainly used to signify how much out of the norm Hajime and Yue are.

What the Ragnorok and Arifureta animes have in common is both completely fail to explain why things are happening -- events just occur, often with only the most cursory and vaguest of commentary. Smartphone never had that problem. Smartphone suffered from poor production quality and a general lack of tension (which you could argue is also in the source material) but at least the story made sense.
In both Ragnorok and Arifureta the story won't make much sense if you don't know the source material. That said, the production quality of Arifureta is superior to the production quality of Ragnorok -- but that certainly does not make up for the fact that the script writing is of very similar quality. In both cases the script writer obviously chose to prioritize getting to the Harem as quickly as possible over every other aspect of the story.
The Arifureta anime is trash, based mostly on the piss poor scriptwriting. I see others complain of the bad CG and all but the reality is the weakest link in the production is the script adaptation of the story... which in theory is supposed to be the point. You can't blame that on lack of money or lack of time, poor script writing is just bad decision making. The first rule of adaptation should be "do no harm" -- you have to cut the fat wherever you can but you also have to be careful not to destroy what is good about the source material. The script writer totally mangled the adaptation of the source material here. IMO this is a classic case of a writer either being incompetent -or- having open contempt for the source material.

I think there is plenty of blame to go around (writing, directing, production value, the 'uncanny valley" of the CGI) I would criticize the soundtrack also, but I kinda dig the cool jazz during the fight scenes, but I bet many find that it doesn't fit the mood.
in comparison to other JNC titles that were made into anime (on a scale of max 5 stars):
Ragnarok: Anime is terrible, zero stars
Smartphone: Took an interesting story and made it into a bland/generic fantasy/harem/isekei. (but still mildly entertaining and at least watchable)., 2.5 stars
AmiBri: plot differs in key points from LN, but anime was well made/entertaining: 4 stars
FMP: faithful to LN (as far as I can tell so far) good production values and entertaining, 5 stars
How not to summon: faithful to LN, hilarious, 5 stars
For my Daughter: Adorable, faithful to LN (so far), Tentative 5 stars
Arifureta: currently off the rails, disjointed, poor direction choices, poor adaptation overall, not actually painful and I see some redeeming qualities, 2 stars -
@jon-mitchell What did you think of Grimgar?
Edit to add:
My only complaints about the FMP anime are the addition of a lot of OVA (four episodes worth, so far) and inconsistent pacing. Volume 1 took 8 episodes. Volume 2 was only 4 or 5. -
Watching Arifureta and Cop craft in raw, it really show how the story around the fight is what really matter. Cop Craft animation was even worst than Arifureta this episode yet the fights were so much more interesting, well the absence of ugly CGI may also have been a factor.
Hajime VA is kinda better tho, at least it's not cringy anymore.@Zing What they did why Kumo manga was terrible, it may work for now but not showing the human side take away one of the best part of the story later on.
-
Yea, Cop Craft actually did stills for some of the 'action'. Came across as artsy and cool (to me)
goes to show that direction/writing trumps budget/technology every time -

Terrible or not, it works and they can just fill inn the info later on, including the time frames. Actually, when I started reading the light novel I got pissed off when I was forced to read about not kumo. But had to give up in resignation since that how the novel is structured.
-
@jon-mitchell Some of it may have been artistic choice but looking at the faces of some characters near the end, that episode definitly had less budget than the previous ones.
-
Thank goodness episode 3 was a lot better than 1 and 2. There might be some hope for this adaptation yet.
-
My take is that the flashback thing is being poorly done. If the time jumps stay a constant part of the show, then this is going to be a bad series, but if they can get it back on the rails, then it should be good.
-
Episode 4 was terrible... Manga did that bit much better.
-
I just watched episode 4.
The CGI is really crappy which ruins the whole fight.I’m mean this kind of CGI comes from the 90th.
Also Yue’s cutesy voice doesn’t fit at all.
I’m trying to enjoy at least what we got.
The LN itself is good. I like it a lot.
But the anime really makes me sad. -

I don't care what anyone else says; the soundtrack is awesome and easily the best part of the anime, and smooth jazz fits fight scenes perfectly.
-
I don't really like the soundtrack, but well, I won't compain either.
The shitty CGI on the other hand is so damn annoying. One episode wasted on a Hydra, which was waiting while they were talking. Luckily there won't be to many long monster fights coming soon, if I remember correctly.
-
After watching episode 3 last night, I definitely think they botched the CGI. That crab looked jarringly out of place.
-
@paul-nebeling The CGI Hydra in episode 4 is even worse to look at...
-
@paul-nebeling Yeah, the cg is awful. Cg scorpion Rock in Mummy Returns looked better, which is regarded as the worst piece of cg in a blockbuster movie.
The hydra is so bad it nearly wouldn't look out of place in Beast Wars.
-
yea, they made the same mistake on ep 4 as they did in ep 3, "uncanny valley" CGI, out of place, textures/shadows all wrong. Poor execution of magic (what a cheap shortcut! floating spheres with random stuff shooting out?) I keep waiting for the story to advance to where it gets interesting, as battle scenes (which helped the LNs along) do not help the anime (cuz they are so poorly executed)
hopefully we get to our favorite bunny girl and pervert dragon soon, or this will be not worth watching
