Taking down volumes
-
@myskaros I did not buy anything. I just tried to read it from the website. However, the word "Preview" does not appear anywhere on the page or links, so I can only assume this is what you are referring to.
Sorry if my answer seems off, as I only just joined the club. I may be misunderstanding what benefits come with a premium membership. -
@Kineko All right, gotcha. Yes, part 1 is always available for everyone to read (and it says "Preview" in the app, I never really noticed it didn't say that on the site ;o). However, the other parts are taken down shortly after the book is officially published. We are unable to stream every volume indefinitely, so since this volume was released in February, the prepub parts 2+ have since expired.
If you check the News subforum or our main page, you can see the series that are on catchup for May, which means you can read every volume in that series for this month. Next month, the series available will change, so as a member you will have the ability over time to read older books/series even after the volumes have expired. I apologize if this was confusing, but please check our FAQ (link: https://j-novel.club/faq) for details on how our subscription service works, and feel free to post here if you have any other questions.
Last, we do realize that the way our membership works is a bit unintuitive, so if you do decide this isn't really what you wanted to sign up for, feel free to e-mail support@j-novel.club and someone can help you get your membership refunded.

@myskaros Thank you for the explanation. It is true that this may not be what I was expecting, as I had thought a membership allowed me to read the translated novels, not just see pre-release previews that get pulled after "2-3 weeks". While the monthly catchups are nice, since there is only one series that I am currently up-to-date with, there isn't much value.
Now I understand why the website is so poor (no queue, bookmarks, etc). There really is no value in those if the only content is a few partial chapters that change constantly. Really a shame.
Thanks again for your time and help! -

Well no, this isn't quite correct. The entire book, every part, is available to read while it's being translated. After the book is released, then the parts get expired. A given book is published at least a month after the final part goes up on the site. So you have 4-7 weeks to read the book after the last part is released. If you keep up week to week, then you have even more time.

@myskaros You may want someone to spend a few minutes clearing up the FAQ, because that is not what it states and it has contradictory sections:
How long are pre-pub parts available?
After the final part in a volume is released, there will be a few weeks where we will do final proofreading and typesetting for the e-book, so all parts will be available at the minimum 2-3 weeks, with ~8 weeks for the first parts in each volume.Volume X is no longer available? What gives?
Once a volume has been published as an e-book, it is removed from pre-pub reading within a month of the e-book release.Your statement that the entire book is available for "at least a month" directly contradicts the FAQ that states will be removed "within a month". Not possible to be both.

I ended up moving the entire comment thread to a different topic.
Also there is no contradiction, after the last part of a book is released they take a few weeks to do final checks before the final ebook is released. Let’s just say 3 weeks, so that is 3 weeks that all the parts are available for members to read.
After the final ebook is released they leave the book up for another 3-4 weeks depending on when the ebook was released, expiring books are taken down on the 15th of every month.
Yes, the pre-pub question says,
parts will be available at the minimum 2-3 weeks
The key term is minimum, yes saying 2-3 weeks implies it is shorter then it actually is...
So yes, all prepub parts will be available to read on the site for members for 4-7 weeks after the final part is released.

@Kineko said in Taking down volumes:
within a month of the e-book release
This is the key here, since the ebook release is 4 weeks AFTER the last part is published. Whenever a new volume goes up, we also post the future release date of the ebook.
However, you're right that the FAQ could use an update, and I have done so to make it clearer. Thank you for pointing it out.

Thanks again for your time and help!I think you're not looking at the full value:
- You can read all new releases as they are translated, and for 2+ weeks after they are completed. That includes new titles not just ongoing series
- The monthly catch-up includes a collection of series that you can read in full
- Premium membership includes 1 book credit per month, and you can buy more books for $6 instead of $7 + tax.
- Many Premium books include bonus content that often was a limited time exclusive to one store in Japan - https://forums.j-novel.club/topic/305/premium-e-book-bonus-contents-list?page=1
If you're only interested in 1-2 series and don't care about being able to read new releases then membership probably isn't for you.
