So this is pretty funny: right now on Anime Trending, for their Top 10 Couples/Ships of the week, Katarina has taken up 7 of the 10 spots.
Ah good Sophia x Katarina finally makes the list, it didn't the previous time, which was kinda criminal.
Anyway...
Any idea from which volumes the next couple of episodes will draw the story from? I prefer to read the LN before the anime, but for some reason getting through Bakarina requires a little more energy for me than other titles. I've read vol 1-2 so far but just couldn't "force" myself to read to vol 3 immediately...
The episode titles for episodes 5 & 6 are as follows (source):
主人公の実家にお邪魔してしまった -- roughly translated as "I bothered the protagonist's in their house?" I think,
and
休みだから楽しく遊んでしまった -- "I had a lot of fun during the holiday" or something like that...Would that still be from something I've already read or from vol 3+?

@GHDpro Episode 5 is from Volume 2 for sure, I know that much. Episode 6... I'm not certain.
-
@TheGrimLich Judging from the Next Episode Preview of episode 6 (which popped up in my Youtube recommendations), it's one of the manga-original stories, at least in part.

Thanks. But Doh! I just realized episode 5 aired last week and I already watched it... yes it was from volume 2.
As for volume 6... still mostly volume 2 according to this Reddit post, but some volume 5 mixed in:

Ooh, Volume 5 content? Guess I've got to finish up Volume 4 quick then, so I can read V5 and see all the bonus stuff!
-
That seems odd.
Seems to me this season will end with the end of volume 4's content at the most.
The beginning and ending anime sequence suggests only volume 2 will be in it.
But considering the pace of the anime how much of the LN story it's skipping normally it seems 3 episodes per volume all it's giving to the LN.
It slowed down for episode 6 though and some of that was new, not much. So it makes me wonder if it'll slow down even more for the anime.
Judging by the previous pace, I'd figure episode 6 would conclude volume 2, but now I'm thinking it'll be episode 8 or 9. Unless we get some fillers, meaning episodes that are meaningless but could be fun, but never occurred in the LN. then we might just reach episode 12 with the end of volume 2.

@Heldawn One interesting thing I noted was that the anime seemed to be following the manga in terms of pacing, plus bits of original scenes to explain some light novel or background worldbuilding stuff (like the magical affinities of the characters). Episode 6 in particular had lots of manga-original stories, including the lake trip and shopping with Sophia, but they added lots of extras like the entire cast being present at the lake, instead of just Catarina, Geordo, and Keith.
Intriguingly, the anime places Catarina's visit to Maria's hometown as during a "school break", instead of the actual summer vacation as in the LN and manga. Overall I think it's a much better pacing, so I approve of this.
In any case, it's likely that the anime will add in the extra non-LN scenes found in the manga, and then flesh them out even further. So it does seem likely the anime will technically cover the first two LNs only, plus the additional webnovel short stories that got compiled into volume 5 (but which were written in the LN1-2 timeframe).

Well I've only read up to LN 4 so I'm not sure what LN 5 covers. But it seems LN 5 is a back take. So while 3 & 4 might not reveal anything for the anime 5 might.
I've only started reading the LN since the anime started. So forgive me, since I'm behind. For me the LN didn't seem that interesting. After watching the anime I felt this was a terrible decision on my part and I have read the LN's and watched all the anime.
-
@Heldawn Yeah, LN5 is a short story collection (not really a spoiler, since it's stated as much in the blurb), and the short stories I speak of are the ones that were in the original webnovel. And that original webnovel, minus the side stories, turned into LN1-2. So there isn't actually any future knowledge in those short stories in LN5.
Also no blame whatsoever on dropping the LNs due to boredom. I obviously love the story, but I'm also well aware that the pacing in the light novels is terrible. Hence why I love the anime as well, since it fixes a lot of the issues I had with pacing (so far).
-
@unsynchedcheese Yeah, the LN pacing can certainly come off as disjointed at times. I agree that the anime seems to have found better footing, so far.
Also, the anime has that awesome OP. Whole thing feels like it could have come out of a old SHAFT show really.
-
I'm really liking the anime thus far. The pacing is pretty good and so is the storytelling thus far. I will say that seeing the antics first hand brings a whole new level of hilarity to the story which is refreshing having read it first hand.
-
@unsynchedcheese The lake trip is in Vol. 2 of the LN as well; about 42%, page 80 of 191 in my reader. It just glosses over the time spent at the lake in a couple of sentences, before cutting back to the ‘defenseless’ line In the carriage on the way back.
Alan’s concert and the shopping trip are right after.
-
So from what I can tell, this entire latest episode is new to the anime, except for the beginning of Sophia dreaming about her past life (which I think happened in Volume 2 of the LN, pretty sure it was that one.) It was fun seeing just how versatile magic can be, and while it was kind of disappointing that we didn't see either of our Water users get to flex their narrative muscle, seeing our two Wind users team up to find our lovably dumb Katarina is a great moment.
Also god DAMN Sophia's got some arm strength there. And it's so heartwarming to see her unconscious memories from being Acchan echo the love she's felt for this carefree monkey child since the day Katarina first thought she killed a person important to her with her butt.
-
The one thing that upsets me about these anime-only side-stories we have been getting in the past couple episodes is that the LN has so many good, if not better side-stories, like Katarina's mother's bafflement at the noble ladies tea party at how at the magic academy her daughter is referred to as a "saint" by the other students and has a large unofficial fanclub, or the backstory of Old Tom. The fact that we could have gotten Old Tom's backstory (which would done a great job to expand how Katarina character affects people for the better in a nonromatic way, not to mention being emotionally moving in its own right) and instead got a piece of mediocre dungeon crawling is just disappointing.
-
@Lily-Garden It looks like we're going to see Anne's story in the next episode, if the preview is anything to go by.
-
I have start reading couple days ago so currently im reading volume 4(first 10-15 pages i read), i could understand whats going on with first 4 episodes but i didnt read the part with "picnic with everyone" and "cave search exam" thing. Those parts are special for anime or what?
-
@hopebestman 'Picnic with Everyone' is a massive expansion of the trip to the lake in Chapter 3 of the second book; the LN just showed Keith intercepting the carriage and the conversation between Jerod and Keith on the way back.
The dungeon crawl exam appears to be anime-original; it's not in any of the LNs translated so far.
-
@Travis-Butler Keith blocking the prince part i knew but "with everyone" part was new to me. Also the trapped in book thing must be the same as cave exam thing. Its interesting that, they made new stuff for the anime. I know there is not much action in the book but story is not about action so why they are putting these kind a stuff i didnt get it.
-
They're probably planning on ending with the dance party where Maria goes through the final event from the game, and needed to stall for time because it wasn't going to fill that many episodes to get there.
-
I really liked the fact that Anne's story got out into the anime. For some reason it just fits in so well with everything else.
