That's like literally the last issue to worry about, it's really not something that makes or breaks the deal for tv-show watchers.

It depends on the watcher. I found the fan translation a tough slog and gave up after volume 2. I’d give a real translation another shot, but 20 volumes of Issei calling Rias “President” and with a lower humor quotient would be painful.

I think most people who are used to multiple media sources are used to the LNs being different.

Just look at The Saga of Tanya the Evil or Yojo Senki. The anime is VERY different from the LNs. There are stuff that is elaborated on in the Anime that is barely even mentioned in the LN and vice versa.

Winning isn't really that fun if you want a challenge... Making others win, on the other hand...

@guspaz Of course I'm not saying everyone should donate 600$ but rather motivate more people to donate 20 - 30 with a little bait. once it does come out... if... then most of those vol. 1 owners will gradually spend their money on the sequels.

The initial 300k should come from many donating 20 - 30 not few spending 600.

Yes it is unrealistic. Very few people in the west even know that LNs exist and just think of most anime as cliffhanger stories and thats it. Many people who do know and like DxD have likely read fan translations already, and most just pirate anime and manga as well anyway. So finding DxD loving LN readers that aren't stingy despite currently having it available for free, donating to a "let's hope" campaign... uh yeah...

Still the concept isn't bad. I think...

Of course, but it's not a question of sub vs dub, this is the issue of translation quality in general.

@fischus As a publisher, you can't start a kickstarter to fund a license without having already signed the license, otherwise you're accepting money for something you don't have any rights to. You need to already be very certain in advance that the kickstarter will succeed for the full amount for all volumes. You can't use the kickstarter to speculatively gauge interest.

I suppose they could try to sign some sort of conditional license with the publisher, but we're talking about an industry where some companies still don't even allow ebooks to exist, and even if you could get a conditional license, it would make you look really bad if the kickstarter failed.

@fischus It’s irrational I agree. Desperate times call for desperate state measures though.

Hate the say it I think the ship has sailed on this LN, which is sad sense it was my first introduction LN

there are three main reason as to why we will never see a office English release.

                  Large number of volumes

as of now there are over 27 volumes of the LN. 25 for the first and 2 for the ongoing second part. The cost for the licenses on this would be very expensive. It would alos mean a well over 10 year commitment to publishing.

                  Anime

While a anime is usually a shot in the arm for a LN this would actually hurt it. There are 4 seasons with a 5th on the way adapting I believe the first 7 or so LN. This would hurt sales as many fans would not buy books on plot they mostly know. While most anime cover maybe the first 2 or 3 volumes its not so much to dissuade people from reading for the more detailed info. How not to summon a demon lord is a good example of this. It would be almost two years of steady novel release to come out before any technically new contest would come out.

                  Fan Translations

Currently the first 26 volumes of this LN have very well done fan translations with full PDF support. This means a large part of the most devout fans have already read the novels so there would no reason to buy the novels meaning sales might not be good

Like I said this saddens me as it was my first LN series I read and would actually love a full English release but as I saith I don't think its in the cards.

@ant13099 I have to disagree on two points. First the anime. After watching all the available seasons for the first time somewhat recently, I want to buy to the light novels to find out what happens. We have zero indication a season 5 is happening at all. I would like to see/read for myself how the story goes without relying on a wiki or sub par fan translations.

This brings me to my second point. Grammatically and phrasing wise they appear to be a train wreck. The person who translated it may have (I don’t know if they did or not) done a good job with a literal translation, but it ends up sounding very poor in English. Trying to read the first few pages of vol 1 for example are embarrassingly bad.

Yeah, we'll have to agree to disagree on how well done the translation is.

I'm quite thankful for any translation, but the translations need /so/ much editing - in every facet from grammar to puncutation to spelling.

You guys reasons don't make any sense they already licensing old series like Sorcerous Stabber Orphen and long one like Invaders of the Rokujouma and stil on going and many ecchi series ...

@croix I think it's less to do with the length of the series and more about the amount of money that the JP publisher is wanting for the series licence. JNC must have got Orphen for significantly less than DxD, otherwise licencing a series like Orphen doesn't make sense since it's a similar length, but has no real fan base in the English market.

@croix Rokujuma is an exception, they were able to employ the fan translator to polish his work since it was allready quite good translation.
It's probably not possible for DxD since the fantranslation isn't good enough, was made by multiple group and it's not sure the publisher would accept such contract.
But it's true that just length is not the issue, it's length plus a mostly complete fantranslation, plus a long anime and manga, plus a difficult publisher plus a fanbase which may not be really book oriented...

@timmaaah But they get licencing Amagi Brilliant Park and now Full Metal Panic from the same publisher i don't think this the real problem

@croix just because it’s the same publisher that doesn’t mean it will be the same licensing fees for each series, there are a multitude of things that can Fluctuate the price up and down, DxD has multiple anime seasons vs Amagi with 1 season, DxD sells more in Japan, DxD is longer (significantly longer) so the cost would also be more.

And I agree with @Timmaaah it probably has a lot to do with money (as in they want a lot), but that probably isn’t the sole reason...

@rahul-balaggan I wish we had more insight on this. It would also be nice to know if there even is any interest in licensing the series. I know personally, I would pay more per novel, just to see it licensed.

Today dxd was removed from baka tsuki. I thought it is licensed but on novel update it didnt showed anything.

Fan translator told that Kadokawa reported a copyright infringement.
So i was wondering why now after all these year. Maybe chances of license deal or they just randomly decide to do it.

Wow if this one was to get licensed....I wonder what that will mean for future licenses. Obviously, I think people would have bigger expectations.

Personally I enjoyed DxD for what it was worth, never read the fan translation but if this one was to get licensed I would probably buy it.

Though if someone were to license it, who would it be?
