JNC’s 200th Book

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe this volume will be the 200th book that JNC will release.
Currently with Bakarina we are at 182 if you don’t count the 3 volumes of New Life +
There will be 2 books (Rokujouma V18 & Rokujouma V19) that will be released next month and in January respectively, which haven’t been added to the amazon list of books.
Looks like there are 15 books to come out after Bakarina and before Amagi V3
So:
182(already released)
+15(books to be released after Bakarina before Amagi V3 according to Amazon)+2(the 2 volumes of Rokujouma that haven’t been out on amazon yet but will most likely drill be released on the regular schedule)
=199

No, the current count is 186, 183 not counting +New Life. I know because I have every release in library, and it shows 186(and every release I have there is downloadable so no mistaking them for pre-orders...).
My guess is if Rokujouma v.18 and either Rokujouma v.19 or some other unlisted volume release comes before end of year, the 200th book will be Orphen v.3 which will coincide with New Year. (Though that's counting the +New Life volumes, omitting them would miss the New Year mark...) -
@korppi yes I have them all to, my mistake came because I deleted Spirit Chronicles cause I am waiting for the email saying that the bonus short stories have been added.
Rokujouma V18 will come out early Dec because it has already been released as a prepub, and their probably won’t be a break so V19 will also be released on time as a prepub next month and an ebook early Jan.
Still not counting NL+ that would make Ragnarok V5 the 200th book.
If we counted the 3 volumes of NL+ and took into consideration the 1 volume of Rokujouma (cause we wouldn’t reach Jan) the 200th book would be Kokoro Connect V3

Pardon me for being a picky so-and-so, but why wouldn't you count NL+? Just because it's "out of print"? They may not currently be selling it, but they did translate and publish 3 volumes of that series.

@paul-nebeling yes it was published but the fact that it is not unavailable for purchase makes me keep them off the list.
If someone says “hey how many books does JNC have for sale right now?” We can’t include those 3 cause they aren’t for sale.

If you are counting published books then those titles were published even if they are now out of print.
It seems better to me to count the milestone of "x published titles" rather than "x currently in print" since JNC might not have perpetual licenses to others in the list as well.
200 published will definitely be something for the staff to be proud of.

The only problem with using that metric is you could reach a milestone multiple times once licenses start ending and whole series suddenly become "no longer for sale". That's why most publishers will use volumes published when celebrating milestones, because that number won't ever go down.

@jpwong a series going OOP is not something that happens everyday, i am sure you already know this but i will say it anyway, they don’t get contracts to license books for 1 year at a time it’s multiple years.
The NL+ incident was an isolated incident was not even an incident of the contract expiring. We have heard this time and time again that only very rarely does it make sense to not renew a license contract, and speaking in regards to LNs and Manga none of the big publisher have let anything go OOP, it is something we have to worry about when then market was smaller and more niche but now manga, LN, anime, etc is getting close to being main stream.

@rahul-balaggan Physical licenses are often for 10 years, but digital are usually shorter, 3-5 years or even 1 year.
We will obviously be renewing licenses for anything we've put out in general, but it's possible that like, our license to Brave Chronicle might expire in another year and the publisher will demand another $1000 to renew the license and I'll be like, "uh, no". And then we'll take it down and stop selling it.
It would be kind of silly for the Japanese publisher to do that but it's happened before in this industry.Our licenses do not last forever, and that's just a how this business works. Companies like Crunchyroll or even Funimation have probably lost or had expire more licenses than they currently own.
There's actually some practical reasons too... like every quarter I produce a royalty report for each license. Doing all the data analysis for a book that sells 4 copies a quarter and then has me owe $8.32 in royalties is a waste of resources to even bother calculating. If a series is selling that little, it actually "costs" more money to keep selling it than it would to just stop. We're not really anywhere near making a call like that yet, but 5 years from now when we have 1200-1300 books in our catalog? At some point we're going to have to let go of licenses.

The headline on front page "Over 200 volumes published in 2 years!" isn't fully truthful as Orphen v3 which comes out on Dec. 30 will be exactly the 200th released volume on jnovel.
Even less so considering we're already 2-3 months past the 2-year anniversary of jnovel's founding date.Except, if all the prepub parts are counted in that as well, the claim might hold true?

JNC did something that other publishers are still struggling. The rate at which LNs are out on JNC is quite awesome (I mean we are quite caught up with Japanese release of most of LNs). I hope they keep it up :)

And Steiner hopes to release 8 volumes of Smartphone next year (6 parts each), so next year is gonna be crazy haha.
