Download to Kindle.

I know there was discussion about making it possible for books purchased on JNC to be downloaded directly to Kindle, or similar devices. I was wondering if there has been any news on this, if it's actively being tried for, considered still, or dismissed entirely.

Can't you already do that by buying the books from the Kindle store? Or do you mean premium epubs in MOBI format? If you've configured calibre and send-to-kindle properly, it's only two or three clicks after downloading the epub to get it on your kindle.

I assume that Amazon does not look kindly (unintentional pun) on other business partner who would offer a direct to Kindle function. You can surely mail it to them to make it available but there is no way to open an epub directly on a Kindle.
As Guspaz mentioned I am doing something similar. Only that I have my calibre server on a NAS where I can simply direct the Beta browser on the Kindle to it. Then I download from it the book.

@guspaz I had meant the premium epubs. Currently sitting on 15 or so credits, but the last time I tried to transfer files manually over to my kindle, I could never get the configurations to be proper.

@miscreeth For the most part, calibre "knows the rules" of how to submit a file to your Kindle. This is a bit condensed, but:
Step 1: Go to Preferences, Sharing, and select "Sharing books by email". Add an email, and enter the information for your Kindle email. Information needed will include the Kindle's individual email address, information on the account you will SEND the message from (Kindle only accepts from addresses it knows about), and how to reach your email server. Make sure the server will allow you to send large attachments; Kindle will accept up to 50MB files, but not all email servers will let you send an email that big. Mine has a 30MB limit.
Since Kindle wants MOBI format, set that as the format.Step 2: Add the epub to your Calibre library.
Step 3: Select the epub in the library, and click on the Connect/share button... Select "Email to NNNNNNN@kindle.com". The first time, you'll be prompted to convert to MOBI before sending; you can tell it to not warn you after that.
You can also tell calibre to automate that - I don't bother.

It's not hard to send books to my kindle -- I do it all the time.
However, it's also a pretty basic feature for any non-DRM'd ebook store. -
Here's the thing - Sure, I can convert the premium e-books into Mobi format and send them to my Kindle with Calibre, but what I CAN'T do is get the dang thing to show the books in the book library, they always get hidden in the docs folder. I can read them, but I really want them with all my other books and I can't seem to do that with Calibre.
And YES, I do make sure the PDOC tag is deleted when I convert. Doesn't make a difference, my Fire HD still refuses to show them in the books library.
So I REALLY want an option to change this.

@darth-steel For me, I had to turn on the setting in Kindle to show docs into the library.
More -> App Settings -> "Show Personal Documents in Library"

I do not seem to have a "more" option in my reader settings, and no option to show docs in the library.
It's honestly driving me mad, and it's enough that I never want to buy an Amazon tablet again. Because my books show up just fine on my phone, but a third of my library is hidden in the docs folder on my tablet.

@darth-steel Have you tried managing via Amazon's online management?
Documents are managed separately from stuff bought through the Kindle store. You can put them into "collections", and view the collections with the Kindle menu to access the books therein. I have one collection for each series.
This applies to anything sent to Amazon for "Kindle-izing". It was the most reliable way I found to deal with it.

Does that "more" setting sync to new devices when you log in?
Cause I never remembered setting it up & I'm on like my 4th phone or table for the Android Kindle app, and everything doc & book has always just shown up for me. I do primarily use the collections view to dump series into folders, but I checked and they all coexist in the big list or grid.
Edit: Could the actual Kindle Fire devices have a slightly different strain of the app perhaps?

Ditto. If I changed such a setting it was many years and many kindles ago, because everything I send to my @kindle.com e-mail address just shows up on my devices like stuff I bought through Amazon.

On my ~2 year old Kindle Voyage I have never changed any settings, and books added using Calibre do show up in My Library, with the most recent additions appearing on the Home screen.
- Attach kindle to PC with USB cable
- Start Calibre
- Add downloaded premium book to Calibre library
- Choose Send to Device and say yes to auto-convert
My Calibre version is roughly a year old since I've been too lazy to update it.
