How does the club membership work?
-
so I just bought the club membership to read a light novel but apparantly I can't read it, if becoming a club member is not how do you get to read them, how can you read them? do you have to purchase the book to read it while you have the club membership?
-
Hello,
Volumes are available to read for members while they're being translated. After the book is fully released and available for purchase, they expire shortly thereafter and can only be read if you buy it or wait for the series to go on catchup.
You are currently able to read all the series from where they are currently being translated, all series currently on Catchup, and all of the recently announced Anime Expo Titles.
If you are unhappy with the membership experience on the site feel free to send an e-mail to
support@j-novel.club
to request a refund. If you have any other questions please let me know.
Edit: also I might as well mention if you are a subscriber of this site you can purchase premium credits to buy premium ebooks
What makes it a premium e-book?

@kappejoj What series are you trying to read? As Rahul said, only volumes that are currently being translated and ones on catchup are available to read with the membership. Older volumes expire a couple weeks after being published in ebook.
-
@LegitPancake Im trying to read Infinite Stratos
-
-
@kappejoj I recommend you try reading other stuff that's available before deciding for a refund.
I recommend reading Holy Knight since it might be the closest to what you're looking for. It's on catch up so you can read from the beginning.
-
@kappejoj Honestly, I do recommend you stay. I came by dragged by Ascendance of a Bookworm, but I found so many more things to read It's almost mind-boggling. I went from Bookworm to Bookworm, Bakarina Light (Duke's daughter), Sorceress receptionist, slayers, and wild last boss, and thanks to catch-ups I plowed through Sexiled, Paying to Win in a VRMMO, Altina, and Demon Lord Retry! And I'm waiting for Outbreak, Arifureta How Not to Summon A Demon Lord, For My daughter I'll Pwn the Demon Lord, Dendogram and My Lil' asister can read kanji...
Best MX$ 100+ I've spent

@shrike_al I only came here to read what the anime didn’t cover in infinite stratos. I’m not much of a reader tbh but if it’s to get some closure from the anime I’ve watched I may as well read it. Might start reading LN’s when I’ve run out of animes to watch
-
@Rahul-Balaggan Is there a way to be notified when you’re able to read it again? Even while I’m not paying for the club membership?

I believe they note which series are in catch up in the JNC newsletter.
Something to note is that in general if you like a series it is better to buy the premium releases rather than read the catch-up. I can't comment for Infinite Stratos, but generally the published versions have more editing (so fewer grammatical mistakes, etc.) and the additional colour artwork and sometimes character guides. Premium versions also have higher resolution artwork and sometimes bonuses like additional stories or textless versions of the artwork (as per the JNC forum post which lists premium benefits which notes that for Infinite Stratos premium gets you textless artwork).

New series go on catchup at the beginning of each month, usually it is the 1st, when the 1st falls on a weekend it is the first business day after the first.
So other then the newsletter (mentioned by @Shiny ). Best way to see when it goes back up is check the front page of the site to see which series are listed as on catchup. You could also come to these forums and see the news section, or follow J-Novel Club on Facebook or Twitter and they will announce hen new titles are out up.

Personally, I have the premium subscription purely to buy the premium editions from JNC and don't do anything with the pre-pub stuff. You can do that with the regular subscription as well, but if you buy enough books, you save money with the premium subscription even if you don't do anything with the pre-pub stuff. So, I actually spend less per book (including the cost of the premium subscription) than if I bought the books from a third-party seller like Kobo or Amazon, and of course, I then get a better version of the books as well as getting them DRM-free instead of getting them with DRM and having to strip that off like I'd have to do if I bought the books elsewhere.

Thank you everyone for replying, really appriciate it. Just have one more question, to buy a book, I have to buy each volume individually right? Like 1 credit for $7 equals one volume?
-
Yes, a normal membership (which you have) is 1 credit = $7 each.
Just for reference when you sign up for premium you get 1 credit when you sign up, and another credit on the 15th of every month.
Today is the 15th but I am not sure if the credits have gone out already.
Also premium members can buy credits at a rate of $6 a credit.

@BartzBB My bad, updated

@kappejoj
Welcome. I hope you stay.
J-Novel Club is a club, not a streaming service (Netflix for books) That being said as @Rahul-Balaggan explained what club membership gets you is access to new translations as they are being translated (and a forum to discuss, like a book club) as well as a discount to acquire completed volumes (via credits, several plans available). A added feature mentioned is free access to 'catch-up' series that vary from month to month (all of the volumes in a series, in their rough/pre-publication format)if you want to pick up Infinite Stratos where the anime left off (I think somewhere around volume 7 but I'm not sure as there's content that didn't make it into the anime, so I'd start with volume 1) , you can buy credits, get the premium versions of the ebooks (which have bonus content!) and enjoy. If that's the only title you are interested in, there's nothing wrong with cancelling your membership next month

Again, I came, not to see what Bookworm the Anime didn't cover, but what was next, That's why I suggested you to stay, sadly, as @Rahul-Balaggan said, IS was on the catch up last month, so it'll be long before it does the Terminator sketch... Or you could spend over US$70 to get all 10+ volumes and leave.

no there's not, but The Church of the Mad Saint Rozemyne of the Books demands us to "convert the infidel".
-
Well I assume that one volume equals one credit. I've got no further questions, thanks for the support!
-
That is the correct assumption.
I know you said you have no more questions but I will leave this topic unlocked until Monday.
