(New) App Feedback

@pcj Yeah, I'm talking about this week's parts for stuff like Bookworm, S-Rank Adventurer that I already read on Monday and ones I hadn't read yet like The Great Cleric or Misfit.
I checked other parts for current prepubs, but only part 1s load. Like Blacksmith vol 5 part 1 from this week loads fine.
-
@dokupe maybe try logging into the app anew? Or check for your membership status. Because those first parts are the free ones, you can access even without an account iirc.
-
@watashidesuka My first post explains I tried everything I could on my end. I've been a premium member for ages and my subscription is active, hence why it works just fine via other devices.

So while this isn't going to impact many others, I'm no longer able to load beyond part 1 of anything when reading on my Fire HD10 (7th gen) as of 1.1.0. I'm logged in, but I've tried clearing data, uninstalling, logging in and out, etc. It seems to work just fine on my Oneplus 7T running Android 11 though.
-
@dokupe What is the exact error you're getting, or is it not an error? Screenshot would be appreciated
-
@bfennema iOS or Android? And yeah I haven't been pushing to beta, sorry, it needs additional review on iOS
-
@chocolatkey
I also have same issue - unable to read anything other than first chapter after app was updated to 1.1.Whenever I try to open such part, app stays at the screen with "Loading part..." text and spinning progress bar/circle. No error messages of any sort.
Applies to all novels that I've checked - both already purchased volumes as well as those that are currently streaming.
Manga seems to be broken completely, even first chapters stays at "Loading part..."
Opening same volume/part via browser from the same device works fine.
My phone: HTC Desire 630, Android 6.0.1

@saivan Could you please try again a few times? I want to see if the error gets captured by our error-reporting software
-
@chocolatkey on Android, but now I'm off beta.
A few things I have noticed:
The page by page (left wipe swipe) vs continuous scroll option in the bottom right is no longer persistent. Its defaulting back to page by page whenever I open a new part up. I think it was ok when I first upgraded, but may have broken after I hit Reset in the Novel Preferences page (when trying to see if there was any way to make the text brighter, see below)
The text is significantly gray-er than it was before, making it harder to read (and I can't find a option to make it "brighter"/more white). -

It's the same gray that most other reading apps use; it is not recommended to use pure white for many reasons, including that it is actively harmful to eyesight.

@chocolatkey
Done I think?
For the last few minutes I've been trying to open 2nd part of the very first volume of Ascendance of a Bookworm (Novel) -
@chocolatkey It's not an error, just gets stuck on "Loading part..." like @saivan. I didn't check before, but I also can't load any manga at all either, even part 1.
(Ignore the night time colors lol)

@dokupe Thanks. I'm beginning to suspect this is an issue unique to older Android versions. Will let people know when I've figured it out
-
@chocolatkey does it use SSL? Maybe plain http when accessing public content but https when you have to authenticate for it?
Older versions of Android have out of date SSL CA certs that don't work with a lot of modern certificate authorities, and also don't support the newer versions of the TLS protocol. I ran into this with one of my apps. If the device has Google Play Services on it, there's a newer SSL library you can prompt the user to install. Otherwise you have to embed your own SSL library in the app. (Which would then require you to push an update to the app every time that SSL library has a security fix, which is pretty frequent on most of them)
Here's a forum post with lots of different ways for developers to work around it: https://forum.f-droid.org/t/lack-of-tls-1-2-breaking-apps-in-older-androids/9823

Something odd I've seen a few things recently, chapters will start centering all their text. Sometimes it loads left justified, then centers soon after.
It is currently happening for me in The Mythical Heroes Otherworld Chronicles part 7. Android v1.1.0

Hi Chocolatkey
Cheers for that!
I just looked at this forum as since updating I too cannot access any book chapters anymore. Instead I get the 'Loading part' screen, Maximum I left it 'Loading part' was 15mins before aborting.Details:
While logged in to the J-Novel Club App it does not load Books I own / Pre-Ordered / Preview of unowned books
While logged into the J-Novel Club Web App using Opera on my Tablet, everything works. Here is the information about my Tablet:
Sony Xperia SPG321 / Android 5.1.1 Kernel 3.4.0J-Novel Club App info from about page: Version v1.1.0
App now shows Coins instead of CreditsGoogle Play Info: J-Novel App Updated on 5th October 2022.
I have also signed up to Beta Test your App.
I hope that helps.

please add option to subscribe. i want to suscribe but i dont have a card. that's why i want the app to have payment for suscribe
-
@pcj How would people be getting as far as the part then? According to people's reports, it's only an issue once they get to the parts screen. It uses the exact same server and same TLS (SSL) connection in the app.
@Denzyl Thanks for the report, having the additional Android version is valuable. I'm working on getting my hands on older Android devices so I can diagnose this.
Note: I've now paused the beta testing on Android, I think it's confusing users because we're not releasing any beta versions right now.

@kiryuukai Addressed here as well: https://forums.j-novel.club/topic/6271/please-add-option-to-suscribe-in-app

@kiryuukai Worth noting that Stripe, our payment provider, does accept refillable VISA/MasterCard gift cards. You should be able to find them at local convenience stores or gas stations.

I was just throwing ideas out in case they were relevant, without knowing how the internals of the app worked. If you're using https for everything (which is always a good idea) then yeah, the fact they can load anything at all from the site is weird.
Unless you're using a third-party library to load those specific pieces of data that are failing, and it's not using the same SSL library you are.
