@terrence Funniest yandere trope I've seen was in Love Tyrant. Mind you, that was a rom-com, not a death novel, but...

Inuyashiki is such a crazy fast paced anime I'm freaking loving it. Definitely one of my favorites of the season.
You subscribe to anime strike? Been worth it this year?
I read the manga a bit. It's decent. By the Gantz guy iirc (and he even makes fun of Gantz in it). =]
-
@terrence wouldn't say it was worth it, but yeah. Only good thing is they are quick to respond to problems with quality issues which shouldn't happen to begin with.
-
I watched Your Name today. It was ok. Definitely got some water in my eyes during parts.
I did feel like Taki wasn't as well developed as Mitsuha, especially family wise. Maybe that was a conscious decision to focus on the small town of Mitsuha and shrine life than give Tokyo anything more than a "big city, small fish" work-life atmosphere.
Kind of meh on the ending, but to each their own.
-
@terrence tbh with you my eyes got watery as well and that usually doesn't happen when I watch anime. I think the movie is worth the praise it's getting but like the director himself said he felt it was unfinished and I would agree. Non the less awesome movie can't wait for more of his work.
-
@hyferzftw Have you read the companion novel, Another Side: Earthbound? That worth investing in?
I felt like the ending was a bit wishy washy in that
(Your Name ending spoilers)
-
@terrence I guess, I don't mind the ending tho that much. Since it's left for our imagination.

Im watching Ancient Magus Bride and King's Game for now

King's Game is my kind of show. Wish I didn't spoil the King's identity (though, that's becoming more clear as the show progresses).
I'm surprised we don't see more death-game manga / visual novels adapted into anime. I'd like to see Zero Escape, Tohyo Game, Doubt / Secret / Judge, and Real Account adaptations.
-
@terrence I really really wanted to like King's Game, but the execution is horrible, simply killing characters left and right without giving us time to care about them. It did make me read the first manga and it's waaaay better, they should've simply adapted the first part on its own instead of making it just rushed flashbacks. The producers really fucked up.

Well, Tohyo Game had about as much depth as this anime, so my standards for cheesy death-game are probably low right now.
Haven't read the manga. This is also based on a phone novel, right? It would have been cool if that made it over (curious if it's just kinetic, or if there are choices).
-
@terrence yeah, the original was a phone novel, I'm not sure what do you mean about choices, you mean like a visual novel?? It was just a straight-forward novel published on a site similar to Narou, before smartphones were a thing there were simple sites where you could upload from a regular phone, imagine writting a 5 novel long SMS with your 12-keyed phone back in the day lol, that's what they call a phone novel.
About the manga, the first one is about Nobuaki's first King's Game which was a lot better than what the anime shows, the characters are a lot better developed and the suspense a lot better handled. Wish I had known it before watching the anime, since I went into it knowing that Nobuaki would be the sole survivor, but seeing him suffer and try to fight against the King up to its ultimate tragical conclusion was a great read nonetheless. The second manga I have not read yet but it's set in the past, about the first game that took place in that village. And the third manga is about the current Game we are seeing in the anime (there's no translation I could find though).
Anyway, I'm still watching the anime but it's mostly because I want to know how this trainwreck ends xD since the first manga didn't actually resolve what the game actually is.
-
@paulnamida I'm only watching because it's the unintentional comedy of the year. I was excited for it at first, but the twist at the end of episode 2 was more funny than shocking. None of the other twists are that good, but I guess I am mildly entertained despite it all. The first manga was pretty bad, so I'm not expecting a good ending, but the trainwreck potential is definitely there.
@Terrence I'm not sure if Zero Escape would work well as an anime. Can't speak for the final entry, but the series kind of relies on multiple playthroughs and whatnot. Adapting it may be difficult, beyond maybe 999. Although the series isn't very popular in Japan in general, which hurts its chances.
I agree about Real Account. I just finished the first volume, and it seems like it could make for a fun anime.

Higarushi relies on multiple iterations, right?
But yeah, I'd just want 999. Go through True Route with
In King's Game, I'm just hoping the "curse" is fake. I think a lot of the deaths could be explained by a third party attacking them.
Tohyo Game had the worst handling of the explanation for "cursed" deaths in a Death-game story.
-
@Terrence I can't speak for Higurashi, never played or watched it. You could do what you proposed for 999, but I'm not sure if it would come across as impressively or effectively without actually experiencing everything. I love 999, and I'm not a purist who insists on playing on the DS, but not sure how a 12-13 episode anime would work. I feel like most VNs fail to make impressive anime. Steins;Gate and I guess Higurashi are notable exceptions, but they both had 24+ episodes.
For King's Game, I wouldn't even mind supernatural stuff, but what they're doing and the execution is just so sloppy to me. And it's hard to care about someone who pops up for 2 seconds before they're killed. Having a 40+ cast of characters hurts too. Especially when they blatantly give away that all but one person died in the first game (original manga), and the majority of the new characters are assholes.
I don't even care that most are going to die. When you go into Magical Raising Project or Danganronpa, you expect the majority to get it, but those 2 series do a better job of giving their characters more depth, or at least more appealing in some way.

I felt like the story would be better if it focused on the past mistakes over the middle portion of episodes, and some mirror problem elements in the future in the beginning and end of episodes, with the main character showing that he learned from the past and saves everyone in the future foiling the plot of the villain / curse.
Of course, that's a different story. But I still like my cheesy drama. xD

If anyone is not watching Konohana Kitan, what are you waiting for?? It's a really deep and emotional show disguised as a yuri moeblob. Not gonna lie, the yuri is strong in there, but the stories told are extremely good. FFS the latest ep made me cry, I'm still crying!!!
-
Finished Space Patrol Luluco. Trigger's nonsense doesn't really work that well in such a short format. I couldn't make up my mind between watching subs for the JP voice acting or listening to dubbed which might have made things less frantic. xC
Onto Sabagebu. This show is stupid.
-
Bumpity Bump.
I watched Poppy Hill - not quite my cup of tea; everything was just wrapped up a bit too neatly and easily.
I'm in the mood for some dark, brooding stuff, so I got up next:
Rin Mnemosyne
Memories (3 films).
Orphen.

Right now, I'm watching Dragon Ball Super, Ancient Magus Bride and (very slowly) Clockwork Planet. I'm going slow on Clockwork so I don't get too far ahead of the LN.
I've got Your Name on BD, and yup, I got teary too. Waiting for Ordinal Scale to arrive later this month.
