anyone used a e-ink device with a browser for JNC website reading of pre-pubs?
-
I love reading on electronic paper, but an affordable (portable) device that supports web browsing has heretofore eluded me - now I see that the latest kindle paperwhite has a browsing feature and I'm considering it - anyone used it for j-novel.club prepub reading? anyone have a suggestion for a better device?(around the same size/price? 6-8" screen $150-200 (I don't want to particularly throw money at bezos & co)
is saw this beast, and I want it but it isn't for sale yet. -
@Jon-Mitchell have you checked out the onyx boox line? They have a wide variety of options, I paid a bit more than $200 for mine but I wanted a model with physical page turn buttons, USB c charger port, and expandable micro SD storage. The boox line just runs a full android os so you can use a browser without issues, but I use the j novel club app instead.

thanks for that - I see the POKE is unavailable at the moment - I'll keep an eye outThere are a bunch of options if you look on their site and buy directly, most of the other stores I have seen don't carry anywhere near the full lineup, just keep in mind that many of their models, particularly ones with an SD card slot, are designed for the Russian market and as a result will cost a lot more in shipping, shipping will take longer, and you will have to do a bit of work to enable the Google play store, so you should pay attention and buy accordingly if any of that matters to you.

amazon just dropped the price 25% - I'm guessing I can live with contributing to their loss (at this price they must be selling below cost) and pick up a paperwhite signature (32gb/no ads/wireless charging) for $139- before I take the plunge - has anyone used a paperwhite for the JNC website?
-
Did you make the plunge and buy it? If so, how does JNC perform on it?
-
I'm now using a BOOX Tab Mini C, and loving it.
It's a bit pricey ($449.99 on amazon), but worth it.
I can even read full color comics on it now. I did the thing where I had Chrome make an app out of the j-novel web site so that it opens full screen. The screen refreshes are faster on this than they are on my paperwhite, and this is in color!
I also find that on black-and-white (or greyscale) patterned comics that the blue bars across the top/bottom seem to do something weird with the e-ink display and end up with rainbow effects in the graphics (which go away when I make the black-and-white image full screen)
It's even possible to watch a video on this (the refresh rate is a bit low, but it's watchable)

@pandabus
I did not, I punted and still use my IPAD (which is excellent for all things JNC except eye strain and battery life)I've been looking for that magical unicorn of a device that uses e-ink ( or a similar technology) runs the JNC app or a browser (even if refresh rates aren't that great : I'm reading not watching video!), is cheap ($100 +/- USD), has battery life that is long (days or weeks)....ideally would fit in a pocket (a5, duodecimo or "b" size depending on what country you are in aka paperback book size) - but if such a magical device doubled as a cover/case for my phone or IPAD - that would also be acceptable
If a Pocketbook basic Lux 4 supported the JNC app (not just importing of epubs) it would be a slam dunk
in my dreams - such a device would be color for JNC's manga - alas... -

BOOX Tab Mini C
yea sound perfect except for the cost
-
@Jon-Mitchell I get you. I want that unicorn to exist. I'd settle for a kindle or kobo that had a decent browser at this point.
-
@Zehd It sounds really great but also out of my price range. Also, from what I gather you're not using the official J-Novel app and instead went for the browser. Any reason why?
-
that BOOX tab has the google play store and an android o/s - I agree - why not just use the ap?
-
I thought I saw an e-reader... maybe it was a new phone?... that ran android so you could install apps. Not sure of the cost or if it even exists though, because who would want an e-reader phone. Calling people is the last thing I do on my cell phone.
-
@Kurzaa onyx makes a whole line of e-readers that are Android tablets with e-ink displays, some of them even have color displays, although those aren't cheap. Look for onyx boox if you are interested.

@Jon-Mitchell honestly, I personally prefer the interface of the mobile website compared to the app. I like being able to look at the calendar to see what's coming up later in the day compared to just seeing the recent releases. The app is good, and if it was all that was available I'd probably use it, but I have a preference for the website so I tend to ignore the app. They might feel similar.
