80,000 Gold LN - Kodansha vs. Slow Press versions?
-
Slow (Sol) Press only managed to release 1-2 before they fell apart.
Kodansha has also now released volumes 1-2, and has volume 3 scheduled for November 28 in paperback, with the digital version to be announced.
I'm curious whether there are any noticeable differences between the two volumes 1-2, and how the translation quality compares. Sol did a decent job with theirs.
-
@HarmlessDave It is the same translation with a new editing pass.
It's also worth mentioning that Kodansha published both vol.1 and 2 as an omnibus edition and labelled it "volume 1". So new english editions are one off compared to originals: EN 1 is JP 1+2, EN 2 is JP 3, EN 3 is JP 4 and so on. So if you've bewen waiting for a new content, dont, it's already there. Unfortunately, Kodansha never mentioned these numbering sheneningans, so it was a "pleasant" surprise that is easy to miss.
-
Huh, I wonder why they did that.
Anticipated lower sales? Legal reasons?
Either way, it is definitely an odd choice. As for Sol Press, translation and editing quality was one of the few things that wasn't questionable about them.
Probably because it was somewhat isolated from central management.
Really, most of the problems seem to have been related to the CEO. -
@Wellwisher Didn't know that. No wonder volume "1" was so big compared to the following volume.
-
@Wellwisher thanks, that explains why I was confused by the summary for volume two—it seemed completely different.
-
Yeah. I was confused too at first and was waiting for volume 3 to come out, then found out their volume 2 is actually volume 3. 😒
-
It was probably to lessen the anticipated low sales due to people already having those versions but I do wish they had called it a Volume 1 & 2 Omnibus or something to avoid the numbering confusion. Would have been nice to add the cover for Volume 2 as an additional colour page as well rather than having it as a black and white image but ah well. Still much better than having the license in Limbo anyway.
-
I'm glad I read all of this.
The entries at LibraryThing have now been updated with disambiguation information related to the Sol Press/Japanese/&c editions vis-à-vis the numeration and contents of the Kodansha USA editions. This kind of thing annoys us librarians something awful...

Only at certain stores? Amazon doesn't list it yet.
-
@HarmlessDave nah, they're talking about JP v3 aka EN v2. Possibly didn't actually read the other posts in the thread to understand that was already covered.
-
Had I know this before, I would have bought the volumes a long time ago. I've been regularly checking stores for the mythical volume 3, when in reality, it was already here... T_T
-
It's a little tricky to parse, but the publication information in the Wikipedia entry does let you know that Japanese volumes 1 & 2 are in one volume under the current English language license.
You have to notice that it's the same ISBN listed for both and accept that it's not a data entry error. And it's going to carry forward, isn't it now?
Every volume number of the current English release will differ from the Japanese release as a result. -
I thought En v2 = Jpn v3 was good, much better than recent volumes of Potions. Possibly because the author was writing the events for the first time instead of the fifth repetition of the scheme/gag/etc.
(Potion's orphans were the high point of the last couple for me and they didn't get nearly enough POV time.)
-
PSA: Volume 3 = Japan V4 is now available in the kindle store, and probably also in the other ebook stores.
-
PSA: 80,000 English volume 4 = Japanese volume 5 was just released yesterday, not that Amazon bothered to tell me (sigh).
Reminder: Kodansha combined the Sol Press volumes 1-2 as their own volume 1, so 1=1+2, 2=3, 3=4, and now 4=5.
-
@HarmlessDave they attached it to the manga series instead of the light novel series, that's probably why it didn't tell you (or me).
-
@pcj Since this affects JNC as well, I just wanted to point out that the series designations are almost entirely done on Amazon's end by some kind of automated process, and efforts to get incorrect series assignments fixed 95% of the time result in the support agent removing the series and letting the automation assign it again, which... as you can imagine, assigns it wrong again.
Amazon has added a manually curated series interface, but that doesn't seem to solve the problem since it still incorrectly assigns series sometimes, and when we show them that a book is clearly in series A on our side and not series B, they basically throw up their hands.
-
@myskaros It does screw up shopping quite often. I only use Amazon nowadays for series NOT sold by JNC, and some of them are quite screwed up. I've got all 5 books of one novel series, but two of them are in with the manga series, so it keeps suggesting I need to get the other three.
And then there are the series where they have, say, 8 books of one as the series, plus two listed as "same universe" (but not part of the series) books, and one due "soon". Will it be part of the series? Will it be suggested to me when it becomes orderable? Who knows!

@SomeOldGuy
Kobo and Google Play also seem to eff up series groupings.
I've long since fallen back on my 'keen librarian skills' (aka 'try everything I can think off and hope!') when searching to see if the etailers carry a specific volume.
