Episodes: 12 -
Well, this means I will have to wait for the Blu-ray. I don't have a subscription to Hidive because it's not worth it in my region. Crunchyroll has more anime for me to watch.
I saw from the promotion images that it takes inspiration from the manga and not the light novel illustrations. I don't like the two blue strips that I see in Yogiri's hair. It's annoying but I would've put up with it just to watch the anime. Now I don't have to bother because I don't have Hidive. Perhaps, by the time the Blu-ray comes out, it might not bother me anymore?

The first episode is finally here! Forcing me to sign up to hidive for the first time. Annoyingly they didn't accept the old gift code I had for them, despite it not specifying an expiry limit. Oh well, at least I can follow Gushing now too, plus finally watch Eminence & Spy Classroom.
Getting back on topic, I thought it was a pretty solid first episode. I paused a bunch of times in the OP, identifying all the characters it showed off. We're certainly getting the first 2 volumes adapted and it at least looked to me like they're cramming 3+4 in too. Which is a bit concerning in 12 episodes. We've made it roughly 20% of the way through the first LN (though that's including afterword/illustrations at the end) so they'll need to pick up the pace a fair bit to pull it off.
I can see why they'd want Asaka introduced earlier but the waking up chaos on the bus is such a perfect series opener I'd have done it as a flashback later on, but it was only like 20s so it's not a big issue.
The voices are gonna take me a bit of getting used to. Tomochika and Sion were fine, Yogiri in my head always had a softer/lighter voice, I think because he's always so laid-back and lackadaisical all the time. Plus a lot of male protagonists have that sort of voice in anime these days. The deeper voice isn't really a problem, just gonna take me a while to get used to equating that with Yogiri. And Hanakawa's voice is just awful, but I suppose that was the point heh. I bet nobody watching this episode as their introduction to the series would believe that he's arguably the 3rd biggest character in it.

Let's see...
After the dragon, he's probably the biggest character in the series so far, not including the teacher and the driver.
Of those not there just to immediately die, he's the biggest.Depending upon how you define 'biggest', that is.
grin
The opening sequence gives so much stuff that we didn't learn for quite some time with the LN and manga.
How much of that makes sense to those new to the franchise, dunno.Anime tend to draw upon any manga adaptation for visual style because there's so much more to draw from.
I don't have any problem with the VAs vocal range; what I hear with my ears never matches what I hear inside my head.
They're a talented bunch.
I think they capture the characters well. -

For anyone who has read the first and definitely by the second volumes, it's not really much of a spoiler. I actually kind of like their portrayal of the OP in that regards. I couldn't stop laughing once I caught on to the gag.

Yes, yes.
That was nicely done. That threatening him is a fatal concept gets covered within the first episode, so that aspect of what was shown in the OP will be caught by those new when they watch the 2nd episode, hopefully.
I was thinking more of what is revealed of his backstory.
That stuff.

There's a slight spoiler for the 3rd volume with
but I doubt you'd even notice who that was if you weren't looking for it. I had to watch it twice myself to confirm it was the same character.
-
I actually really enjoyed the first episode but I am annoyed that Sion became Shion. I really hope we can get to a point eventually where character names are consistently translated between different mediums.
-
Watching the anime reminds me why I enjoyed the earlier volumes. Before well the story became what I felt a little bit too vague and generic and I lost interest
-
@custodes - I similarly fell off a bit in the later volumes, but "becoming generic" is the opposite of what I'd say happened.
My recollection is that it started fairly generically (Yogiri is overpowered and his power lets him establish himself in a hostile environment), but the longer the series went on, the more it showed off how unsuitable Yogiri's power was for the situation he's in.
Nearly every overpowered isekai protagonist encounters situations where they can't use their whole power because doing so would have consequences on a larger scale than the immediate problem that they'd solve. From a writing perspective, this makes a lot of sense: forcing them to limit their power is one of the easiest ways to create tension despite an overpowered hero. Then they can show how the hero solves that problem without using the forbidden power, through some clever plan or with the help of their friends (or harem).
Instant Death Cheat doesn't do that. (I'm putting details in a spoiler block, but I'll keep things vague enough to not spoil any specific events.)
The quality definitely did go down in the later volumes. I think the author was having a hard time figuring out where to go. The way the story kept introducing new things (to have Yogiri kill them off just as quickly) felt disjointed and disconnected.
But generic, this ain't. At least in my opinion.

It amused me how they used Mireiyu in the mid-episode intertitle card & Hidive put her in the episode thumbnail even though she's got like 2 mins screentime and then is gone forever.
Although, I've been watching Shirobako (it's really good) and that does make me consider the ridiculous number of characters the poor character designer will have had to work on for this series, only for half of them to die straight away so I can definitely get the desire to want to use them a bit more where they can.
-
As of episode 4 I'm glad the Shion/Sion mistake was corrected.
-
Two of my favorite scenes in the manga was in this week's episode:
-
When Aoi magic sight sees Yogiri's true nature and it drives her to despair.
-
Sion summoning the scientist to learn more about Yogiri and coming to the conclusion, What hath I wrought by bringing him upon this land.
-
-
@Lily-Garden It's funny, until the anime version, I for some reason believed that the scientist here was Shiraishi, Asaka's boss. Then I went back and reread the LN and realised it never says that at all. Neither does the manga, which I read the fan & official translations of and never noticed my mistake.
-
Looks like the ending of this is gonna go full Master of Ragnarok sadly. About 80% of this week's episode must have fallen completely flat for someone not familiar with the source material. Just bounced from one scene to the next, spat out the main line(s) as quickly as possible and then onto the next, with no attempt at any kind of transition between the different plot threads going on, or any of the secondary lines to help push the point of each scene.
The whole show's kinda been like that tbh, but they upped the pace significantly more here, unsurprisingly since they've left just 4 episodes for almost 2 entire books.
-
@TheWickerMan It looked like they adapted the LN more or less straight. The LN was actually pretty bad during the same period. The only "advantage" the LN has is that it wastes a few paragraphs on narration to setup each scene, which the anime/manga does with pictures.
