@admin Oh, no problem, and thanks. That's how we learn!

It's pretty depressing though as it involves her fiancé betraying her for that receptionist girl. They also shorten up a good bit of it, so it fits into a single episode. I'd have liked a bit more of the reaction from those she knows, though we do get to see a bit of Irma and Lucia!
Dahl's blasé external affect carried through in the LN, but the whole "rumpled sheets on the bed" and such had extra punch in visual presentation. Wonder why they cut the thread about Marcella having just moved her stuff in, so it was fine to move it all back out? Loved the extra Lucia stuff that I don't remember from the LN.
Also at the end we meet Volf (or 'Wolf' as the translation I saw calls him). But um... He doesn't really look like he does in the book...? He's not all that pretty of a guy and (to me) comes off very... um... normal...? Volf is meant to be a total Bishonen hottie that gets some much wild attention from girls that he reacts poorly on meeting women... I just can't see the guy in the anime being that at all... o.0
Yeah, he's supposed to be so pretty that every girl is throwing her panties and room keys at him, although that's 60% due to his eyes. Y'know, I don't remember if any of this other family (brother, parents?) were described as having metallic eye colour?

The vice guildmaster of the merchants guild in particular had a lot to say to her about the way Dahlia's relationship ended... After all the woman clearly sees Dahlia as a mentee, but that part was skipped as was some of Marcella and Irma's conversations with Dahlia... And I kinda wish they had left them in.
I believe (and Lucia Vol 1 suggests as well) that Lucia didn't find out about Dahlia's ex situation until the sudden creation of the magical garment factory. So that part is new. Lucia Vol 1 states she had been giving Dahlia time to cope with her father's death, so they hadn't gotten together for a time.

I actually can't even recall his eyes in the anime... He was just so... generic... They definitely didn't use his book appearance as a base. xD
And no I don't recall any living relatives having similar eyes, his eyes being pretty unique though it is mentioned that some others have had eyes kind of like his.

Volf didn't open his eyes last episode, so maybe the anime is deliberately making he look "meh" for a more impressive reveal. Right now he looks like a generic pretty guy when he (or at least his eyes) should look like this.

He did, at the very end before the credits. Considering they deliberately hid his eyes until that moment I think they were going for an "Oh shoot, he's hot!" reveal. But they didn't quite play it up enough.
The framing of the shot was straight on, just light movement of him moving up his head. Imagine a visually more interesting angle, pretty lighting effects like the sun coming out from the clouds, the wind blowing the hair from his eyes, increased detail in the art for the key visual, etc. Heck, even some shoujo sparkles! It was undersold.

So in the great Volf Debate... I went searching for an example of Volf in the LN and in the anime to compare side by side... What you get is:
LN
Anime
The Anime picture is art for distribution (ads, promotional material, etc). So... They look sort of alike, but... I dunno, maybe it's just my opinion, but anime Volf looks... bland. Heck, even when I look at the LN cover art I kinda feel he can't live up to his book description, but he's more 'styled' in the LN art.
-
@NakamiJun Is there a Dahlia manga that’s being used as a source material, rather than the LN (as Apothecary Diaries)? If so, maybe he’s plainer in that? Or it’s just Dahlia getting the bargain-basement anime treatment…
-
@Ingraman Dahlia has two manga adaptations (also like Apothecary Diaries), although only one is ongoing. It's licensed by Seven Seas, but I don't read it so unsure if it might be what the anime is more drawing from

No, the anime has created its own designs partially based on the illustrations by Kei (LN illustrator) who is credited in the opening sequence, and Sumikawa (of the seven seas manga) is credited as cooperting with something (I'm assuming the Ordine alphabet used in the manga). The other stuff like interior design and etc. seem to be completely original for the anime.
-
@NakamiJun I totally agree that Wolf/Volf looks bland. The opening sequence shows the two at the table but he looks.......normal.
-
So um... I Parry Everything Episode 4 came out yesterday... And I'm still suffering through it. At it's current pacing it might manage to get through book 1 and into book 2 during this season... Watching them encounter a 'goblin' was painful though.
-
Dahlia episode 4 is out!
So um... For about a second the animators actually showed what Volf's eyes are supposed to look like, using shimmering golden tones up close. They then proceed to animate them like in the picture above the rest of the time. So it's safe to say the animators just didn't want to have to work at that level of quality the entire time. Dahlia's art in general is serviceable, but not on the higher end of the scale, so I guess that's just going to be how it is.
I'm going to toss out my other pet peeve from this episode and last... Which is the team behind the anime hired another voice actor just to play the male voice of Dahlia. They could have just used an actual voice changer instead, so it actually sounded similar... I use a tool meant for tweaking voices in songs (not auto-tune, but allowing similar adjustment) and it can be used in real time even with modern computers. I feel it just would have sounded better for this. Pet peeve complete!
Otherwise it's pretty spot on as a translation from the LN. We get the part where she first starts creating the Rosetti Company, the vice-guildmaster takes her shopping, etc. We also see Volf talk to his Captain about getting a introductory letter for the merchants guild to return Carlo's coat to Dahlia or rather 'Dali'.
-
@NakamiJun watching it in general is painful
-
@NakamiJun Yeah, it's unfortunately not a huge budget (or huge workload) production, so visually it's suffering. Wolf's eyes look like a tasty pint of beer! Even if the story parts are there and really good.
To give them some grace, it's an issue for the anime industry as a whole, as part of the "maximize profits at the expense of the product" paradigm. Been true since Tezuka. I don't blame the animators for not trying hard enough, as much as I do the production committee for demanding the animation studio completes the product in X time for Y dollars.
Dollars and cents, ya'll. If by cents you mean sense, and by sense you mean "I get the cents."
-
@NakamiJun Ehh, it's rough around the edges but I still like that we have an anime.
though maybe I'll take a page out of Dahlia's book and have a glass of wine with the next episode 😉

I am currently doing a re-read of the books because it been a while. It is mentioned that his
brother Guido has blue eyes and that their father Renato also has blue eyes. I don't know about the other brothers and I don't know if they mentioned Vanessa's eye color.
I am currently re-reading book 3. -
Volf looks like a generic anime boy. Hey could stand out if other characters had less shine. I wonder if Volf should be super hot at the expense of every other male character having obvious flaws? Should Marcello have a heavy brow? Ivano, a whispy countenance? Tobias, a weasel's jaw? All the other Knights and Nobles, a savage apparition?
You could make Volf hot by making the other males average or ugly. But I think the show lacks Sakuga, overall. Maybe it's coming in future key moments?
This is not the high budget adaptation I wanted, I wish Volf and Dahlia had mappa eyes. But for what we've got, the story beats are there.

It seemed to burn through story a bit quicker than I was expecting? Volf's return after being dropped off was elided, what prompted Dahlia to go check on her patents (contracts?) wasn't shown, etc.

Jinshi in Apothecary is shown as being extra pretty by giving him moments: (don't remember exactly but something along the lines of) slow motion hair flip, holding poses and giving the moment sparkles, and the like. Of course, that adds a bit of a comedic tone to the proceedings but I take no issue with that. Just give Volf some female gaze.
-
At this point, I think Mena looks much better than Volf...
-
I think a lot of Volf's lack of bishounen vibes just comes down to the art style being too low detail.
I compare the Dahlia anime in my head to the Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion anime, which was similarly stiff in animation but worked a lot better for me than Dahlia has so far. That show's black-hair-golden-eyes male lead felt a lot more "unbelievably pretty" just because his face has more contrast and shading to define his sharp features than Dahlia's art provides Volf.
In Raeliana
Versus Dahlia (I couldn't find an exact comparison image)
The visuals in Dahlia all look a bit muddy with everything in color pushed to midtones, and especially that texture overlay effect they slap onto e.g. Volf's armor when it's bloody, which looks very quick and exceedingly cheap.
