The series I re-read most are all lighthearted adventure stories:

      • Full clearing another world
      • Hell mode
      • In another world with my smartphone
      • Lazy dungeon master
      • To another world with land mines

Keeping the list to 5 makes it much more interesting than 10 IMHO. I think it makes the choices more thoughtful.

I was reading Lazy Dungeon Master, I think I am up to Vol 8 but the series went a little more pervy with each volume (one other non JNC book - Loner Life in Another World is another series I like alot but started down that same pervy path around Vol 3-4). I liked these two series for the MCs and how they solve problems rather than the other stuff. I will probably get back to them both eventually.

I think I will have to add Faraway Paladin to my list as a future read.

I did try the first Vol of Infinite Dendrogram through rental but I didnt find it as something to try and catch it up so I could stream it. Does it get that much better after the first book?

What about Butareba do you like so much?

@geetop the MC is stuck in the body of an ordinary pig, so he can only use his wits to protect himself and his friends. No superpowers, no cheats, just brains and the superior sense of smell of a pig.

Though the premise of the story appears silly at first but the story is far more serious than it would lead you to believe. The first parts are a feint, the latter parts unfold to reveal a darker fantasy tale.

The characters and the world are solid, and there is enough humor to lighten the story.

Given your list, you may enjoy Butareba. Check it out if you haven’t already

“There’s always a story. It’s all stories, really. The sun coming up every day is a story. Everything’s got a story in it. Change the story, change the world.” ― Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky

@geetop I'll save you some time with loner life:

            spoiler

As for LDM, I don't think the fanservice ever gets less, but it is often integrated into plotlines, and there is always something going on that's interesting.

Leaving aside the 'longer series = more time' factor and focusing instead on the best series (that I've read/tried, so 34 candidates):

              • When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace
              • Endo and Kobayashi Live!
              • Tearmoon Empire
              • Invaders of the Rokujouma
              • Fushi no Kami (despite the fact that the second half of the last volume has about 5 volumes worth of content crammed in just to make sure it got an ending before being dropped)

That gives a nice variety as well

@Lex said in If you could only read five JNC series- what would you choose?:

I'm not good with these kind of lists because I like many things and I'm sure that the answer I'll g8ve now it's not the same I'd give next month and that would be different from what I'd say next year.
Having said that, I'm going to cheat a bit and make two different lists based on two different criteria. The common thing is that I'm excluding series that are complete or canceled or in hiatus, so no Arifureta, How not to summon a demon lord, Monarer tamer, despite being among my favorite.
The two series I'm not going to give up no matter what are Rokujouma and The misfit of the demon king academy. I love both of them, and the former is the one that brought me to this site. As for Misfit...did you really think I can give up my weekly dose of Anos?
So, for the other mentions. The first list is made of series that are ending and I'd be crazy if I miss the conclusion. Those are Zero Believers, Realist hero and You like me, not my daughter.
The second list is instead made of series that I think will keep going for a while and would give me a food amount of content to read. Those are Infinite Dendrogram, Elf bride and An introvert hookup hiccups,

And, in fact, reading again this post makes me think if I shouldn't have picked Rebuild World instead. Which series would be excluded to make room for it, I don't know.
