@Almond-Magnum In the book linked, that was a "side character" Shiina Mitsuya and her "childhood friend" Saburou Yaguruma, as it were. They were primary in that book.
Quoting the afterword of that book:
Saburou and Shiina, the new freshman duo, seem to have taken the hero and heroine positions in both Volume 21 and 22, but they will settle into regular supporting character status from Volume 23 onward. I know. It seems like such a waste. -

Interesting. Are you sure that's not just an artifact of the translation issues? Could you give an example?
FWIW, I really liked the Celivera arc and feel like this volume has many of the same elements that made it fun. I just keep tripping over the translation and feel like I can't judge it fairly.

Its become quite transparent, gachawise, how lucky a reader is to roll [title he's interested in] with [X group handling its TL] .
Yeah. I don't get it. I might expect some consistency given that publishers have an interest in ensuring the quality of the final product. It's hard for me to understand why a product could be shipped with such poor QA.
Despite some minor errors I've never actually had any issues with the Death March translation before now. It's certainly never stopped me from understanding or enjoying the story previously.

Basically the short story collection volumes, like for Arifureta and Bookworm, they may or may not contain new content. There are several for Death March, however Yen Press hardly ever published these types of volumes until recently, nor do they do the bonus short stories with each volume. There is hope, though; They've been doing them for Dan Machi and Re:Zero (though it's still well behind) and they even announced Ex1 for So I'm a Spider so What?

@Arcene I see. Thanks for answering. Honestly speaking, I skip the side story content for every series besides Bookworm. I have no interest in Spider side stories, for example (with the sole exception of spending more time with Sophia in demon school).
Death March may be an interesting exception here. I've invested so much time into this world and these characters that reliving key story moments from different perspectives sounds like it could be pretty fun. I think if Yen can address their translation problems and if they decide to bring these Ex novels over, I'd probably be willing to give them a try.

@unknownmat I mostly agree, frankly most of the Arifureta side stories were atrocious, especially the what-if ones. I just used Bookworm as an example, but these side story volumes tend to me more along the store exclusive bonus stories which Bookworm SSCs aren't. That said some series do put non-essential but still meaningful scenes in their side content - the one I'm really missing is COTE, Seven Seas do regularly release these type of side volumes, but they never do the bonuses like J-novel does.
I don't know how important the Death March ones are, but I'm not that interested tbh, it doesn't have that much story to begin with, so it's probably just more of the same. I'm really excited about Spider Ex1, though, it seems kinda like a fanbook and has information on all the unique skills the reincarnates got. But I'm most excited for Ex2, that has post V16 content and provides (not really spoilers but tagging anyway):
Whiles it's not unshakeable as Bookworm, Spider is my second favourite series, so I'm really excited for that content in particular, I was okay with how things wrapped up - all the loose ends I really cared about were covered - but this is exactly the extra stuff I wanted to know but could live without.

Side stories are often easily ignored for me since they can't affect the main story and I'm not that fond of the silly what-if stories.
The side stories for Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear in the two .5 volumes aren't essential but are fun and something to read while waiting for the next "real" volume.
JNC's Realist Hero has some very good side stories that fill in little gaps in the main story that were skipped to keep the narrative moving smoothly. They're good enough that I re-bought the first few JNC volumes because I'd originally bought them from Amazon.

The consensus should therefore simply be such: that where side stories (or even sequels, prequels and spinoffs) exist, they should be licensed, for the Schrödinger complement,
- 'Is it really worth reading ( ´ Д `)ﾉ'
juxtaposed against,
- 'You absolutely have to experience this!! (∩｀-´) !"
is that way easily resolved and made a non-issue.
To embark on exploration, indulge or no - that later can be left to the discretion of readers (who anyway will probably, you know, read, 'cos they're fond of the world)ReZero was brought up earlier, a series with 20 volumes worth of apocryphal content, effectualized by the author to explore backstories, and even to shape up future arcs, sweetening the overall experience by a factor... pretty high. Incalculable. It's invaluable. Tanpenshuu is great. Yen Press couldn't ignore them forever.
In fact, as of the arc they're translating, and those moving forward, they're pretty barebones ... unless you're incorporating side story knowledge since, well, that's around the time Tappei (author) started fully integrating everything.
(I'm not sure they'll grab the ReZero encyclopedias sadly. Hopefully.)Likewise for Danmachi, where over half (55%+) of all world exploration and loose ends transpires in SS material; from the unsparing Oratoria, to Familia Chronicle, then up to Tales of Heroes, still further to Minor Myth and Legend, to at last Orario Stories. Omori will probably pen even more.
Ryu's intervention in Freya's arc is truly great once you go through Familia Chronicle, and entry A-R.
(No news so far on Argonaut Record, and Orario Stories on the Yen Press side)You find the same with SAO (SAOP), Full Metal Panic(FMPA! &FMPF), NGNL, Strike The Blood (No Appends from Yen Press), Date Alive (No Date Alive Encore from Yen x2) Classroom Of The Elite (This one is so critical, I started purchasing JP copies of the books which appended them from all stores. I also have a book which collected all SS until the end of the second year, and it's a book 1000 pages long. All of that is missing from SevenSeas. Was really hard to find, including V0.), Mushoku Tensei, Princess Tutor (The Mentor in a Frontier City), I.D, The Irregular at Magic High (There's so many of these), My Youth Romantic Comedy (Extra pieces)... just about everything that has ever had these, really, and I guess they all do.. Poke around and see what's missing.
For older series, it's a shame, since they've probably lost licenses, but, yeah. Who knows.
I'm looking forward to Strike the Blood Append 1 - 4 lol. Kinugasa's 1st novel too someday, when it's revealed to share the same world as Youjitsu.
