Do you prefer the "original" work, or is there an adapted media type you prefer for certain series?

One thing I do want to point out though... I think adaptations shouldn't be afraid to be different from the source material. Different media have very different pacing, and I think if you need to change the order of events or even just re-write things entirely, it's not necessarily a bad thing.
For example... the original Full Metal Alchemist anime just straight up wrote a new ending. And a lot of people still prefer that version of the story to the manga version. I don't really agree, but I think it was pretty good, and I'm glad that they did it.
So many anime adaptations of light novels have a pacing problem. Most anime these days are 12-13 episodes, but light novels might take several volumes to really "get going", so to speak. This means the anime has to either find a cut off point to just stop the story (and hope for a 2nd season), rush through a ton of content per episode to get to the "good bits", or they can do something anime original.

A bit to difficult to answer this question.
Let's take the most common case first:
-I will always read the novels (original or novelization of other mediums)
-I am pretty OK with VNs
-Not OK with manga adaptation unless it's based on an anime I really love (but I have too many negative experience with LN-based manga)For exceptions:
There are times when I can't decide between the original and adaptation.
They understand the original core and bring out smth that makes use of the medium they are part of e.g.:Monogatari series
The direction in this one is really unique (I don't know why people are saying that direction in SHAFT is always like Monogatari but each SHAFT director utilizes unique techniques aside from the SHAFT staple ones.)I just want both~!
The anime has its own flavor and want it to go on and the novels are amazing and I am trying to catch up to the recent release now.Made in Abyss
The anime direction, compositions and OSTs created an atmosphere that is very difficult to be created through manga
However, Both are great3-Gatsu no Lion
I loved the manga then I watched the anime and I can't decide which is better.
The anime has its flavor and the direction is one of the best in SHAFT!I am Hero
The movie changed a lot in story but it made it works in the short Movie format. -
Preferred the adaptations: The Disappearance of Haruhi, Death Note anime (first half), Ghost in the Shell
Preferred the original: Tales of Earthsea, Harry Potter, Golden Compass, Fate Stay Night, Discworld, Ace Attorney
Both brought something to the table: Grimgar, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, H2G2
