Discussion of Mari Okada's Autobiography
-
@sam-pinansky Thanks, the preview page did not have that option yesterday. Sold!
-
Whoever wins the shikishi should share it with the rest of us here so we know who to target. :3
-
Can we preorder this soon? =]
-
@terrence the pre-order has been up since like day 1 of announcement
-
@rahul-balaggan Ah, thanks. I don't know what I was doing, but the page I was on didn't have the buying options.
Edit: It's weird, but if you just go from the titles page, that won't get you to the purchase screen. Clicking on Part 1 of volume 1 (the white menu option on the page, "Read Now") doesn't do it either. Clicking on the Black menu option under volumes ("Read Prepub Now") is what works to pull up those purchase links.
-
@terrence Buying options are always listed under volume's page. There's also a part's page and a "serie"'s page that look almost identical. It makes a bit more sense for series that have more than one volume and more than one part.

After finishing this, I wonder about the theory about the two types of writers. Supposedly, there are two types of writers, those who write for themselves and those for others. This autobiography is really hard to place which is which. I hope it was therapeutic for Okuda, though reading this was an interesting take on the duality of her creative process. Is Anohana "writing what you know" or "writing what you want to know"? The creative tension in the book and the ambiguity is what carries the narrative through.
Metacomment: Hopefully j-novel.club will end up publishing more Nonfiction. This was a good starting point and worth the purchase.

I just finished the book. Absolutely with the price. I won't say it's turned me into an instant fan, but it certainly sparked my interest in watching some of her work.
I agree with @alocervancouver. JNC does need to continue publishing non-fiction. Market permitting, of course.

Seems like this book is inspiring a live-action television special.

@legitpancake I wonder if Crunchyroll will sub it.
-
More non-fiction in the industry please!
I'm reading the ebook right now =) -
@aumi I'm glad people are slowly discovering it. Very slowly.
-
just thank you for reading this from one of my favorite authors

Just finished this and I absolutely loved it! I especially like how honest she is about her circumstances and the way she described her youth shows a lot of self-reflection. I was very moved when she talked about her difficulties because I think my personality is similar to hers (though I loved school and I'm not as fearful of people).
This isn't an in depth look at the anime industry the way Shirabako is (though it definitely has a lot of insight in the industry just because that's the author's main work). I would say it's more about her relationship with her mother and her journey to find a place where she belongs in the world. The place just happens to be the anime industry.
I really want to watch The Anthem of the Heart now.
