Sol Press Discussion Thread

Detestable Demon Lord comes out in about a week's time from Monday iirc.
This will be their first digital light novel release on their personal store. I believe they said it'll be EPub format for their digital stuff there.

@stardf29 actually looking forward to that one, looks cute and funny
True, but possibly waiting a year for volume 2 undercuts that a bit.
Their last "weekly" blog (from August 19) dropped all mention of 80K volume 2 so I have no confidence in them releasing it this year.
-
Can't J-Novel also get license to translate the series?
-
@warstalker Not unless SOL Press hires JNC as a sublicense like what happened with Beatless. Though I and probably everyone else here have my doubts that would happen anytime soon.

@piisfun said in Potion Loli Vol. 4 Discussion!:
P.S. I keep hearing about it, but just how slow is Sol Press?
Bad, real bad, I posted this comment over a year ago, and nothing has changed.
Also I purposely responded in the Sol Press thread to keep Potion thread on track.
-
Did not see this thread, sorry.
-
There is no reason to apologize, I just chose to respond here

Ignoring their old issues which are as bad as said before (QA and typesetting are just stagnant / moving at a snail's pace, speculated to be because they don't have the staffing / pay), they're currently dealing with printer issues for the first three physical Rakudai / Chivalry of a Failed Knight volumes (I'd suspect this could hold up future volumes if they want to have print and digital dates announced at the same time).
-
Since Sol Press started their negative aspects kept on increasing and worsening as time goes on. I thought that they might change when they licensed Rakudai but the promised 3-4 months interval is will come to pass in two weeks but there is still no sign of a release date of volume 4.
-
@bartzbb I don't have much hope that this is the true reason you haven't seen anything but because of their bad track record they might not be allowed to prerelease digital books, at least on Amazon. I believe Amazon doesn't like it when digital copies miss their release date. Other digital release sites might be the same way as well, I don't know.
-
@malloc
In 2 weeks we'll know for sure if it will be released within the promised interval and if not then that just proves how bad they are. -
@bartzbb I'm not holding my breath. I don't have much faith in Sol Press when it comes to Light Novel translation and distribution.
-
@bartzbb I don't think I need any further proof.
-
In any case I'm just giving Sol Press one last chance.
Rakudai is a series that fans have been clamoring to get licensed for years even before the anime aired. If they fail in Rakudai as well then all those fans would become an angry mob clamoring to RESCUE Rakudai from Sol Press.
I just hope that the JP publishers will still try again for a localization if a RESCUE does occur.
PS: WHY THE HELL DID SOL PRESS GOT THE RIGHTS AND NOT JNC!?!?
-
@legitpancake but what prevents original publisher selling license to another translator, because for example first translator is too slow translating light novel?

The original publisher here is HJ Bunko, or Hobby Japan, they licensed the series to Sol Press for translation into English, Sol Press can do whatever they want to do with that title as long as it stays within whatever contract terms they worked out with Hobby Japan.
So Sol Press has full exclusive English rights to Detestable Demon Lord, and unless Sol loses those right for whatever reason no one else can license it.
If theoretically Hobby Japan said that if Sol Press does not release at least 1 new volume every 2 years or something they will then forfeit the license, then other companies such as J-Novel Club can try to secure the title.
As of right now today, nothing can be done.

I've been checking their homepage very frequently for updates, but... nothing for the past 3+ months or so. It's kinda bad when their last post about progress updates literally says "4 months ago" on their own site. Sigh. Even their Twitter account is mostly a ghost town.
-
Also, apparently Sol Press's 18+ novel "Busy Wizard" has been taken down from Amazon US (don't know about other countries). It's still available on
Sol Press's store,FAKKU and Bookwalker Global. -
Hmm, I should get around to removing the DRM on the few Sol Press titles I own, just in case they disappear completely from Amazon not just for new buyers. The two Strongest Gamer books were good.
Sigh. I was thinking we might get volume 2 of 80,000 gold that was "100% translated" in April 2019 and "in QA" November 2019 sometime this year, now I'm losing hope.
-
Yeah, they aren't selling Busy Wiz on their store cause it could lead to payment provider issues or something (like what happened with MangaGamer for a good part of last year because of their 18+ stuff). Sucks cause outside of Google, that's the only way I'd buy it.
Definitely sets a bad precedent when one of our first major 18+ labeled LN is being banned from the major book seller. In roads to getting more 18+ LN getting harder / publishers probably more cautious. =[
