      Hello,

I can't find any guidelines for making a request, and this particular request seems to have fallen to me to make, so here I am.

I would like to request JNC to license and make available the Ascendance of a Bookworm drama CDs, however many there happen to be.

The idea for this submission came up in the forums here:
@Rahul-Balaggan said in Bookworm Part 3 Vol. 4 Discussion!:

As of right now no one has made a licensing suggestion for the Bookworm Drama CDs, I am going to sleep now, but I can say with 99% certainty that by the time I wake up a topic will exist.

NOTE: You can follow the thread back a bit to see the genesis of that suggestion.

As for the specifics of what I am requesting, unfortunately the extent of my knowledge is what was recently published in the P3V4 afterword:

I'm also pleased to announce that the details for the Ascendance of a Bookworm drama CD have been ironed out.

And that is all I know: that there exists at least one Bookworm drama CD containing material, presumably a short story, that I want to listen to and that I would be willing to purchase if I could.

In the above thread, @Rahul-Balaggan noted that JNC has some experience translating and releasing drama CDs, so I am hoping there might be some chance that you can do so for the Bookworm CDs. For what it's worth, if you do so, you will have at least one customer.

I'd definitely be interested, even if it was just getting the scripts (although obviously, getting to hear the drama cds would be even better).

My grasp on sanity remains absolute.

Oh, right, the poison, the poison for Kuzco, the poison chosen especially to kill Kuzco, Kuzco's poison. ...That poison?

I'd definitely be willing to pay for a Bookworm audio drama with JNC subtitles (especially if it was made clear which character was speaking at any given time). As with the fan books, the release would ideally want to be timed to prevent spoilers but maintain relevance.

          Stay shiny, y'all.

These might be additional drama CDs that are tied to the anime though.

                  @jpwong Thank you.

Any idea what's on the CDs? Is it an original short story?

@jpwong I'm not sure what those "soundscapes" are but I believe they're separate from the drama CDs. Bookworm has 5 drama CDs to my knowledge which can be seen on the website. Drama CD 1's coverart is safe for LN readers, but 2-5 are increasingly spoilery. I've never listened to them myself so I don't know what they're actually about.

                    http://www.tobooks.jp/booklove_dramacd/sp/index.html

The drama CDs are attached to the following volumes respectively

                    CD 1: P3V5
                    CD 2: P4V3
                    CD 3: P4V7
                    CD 4: P4V9
                    CD 5: P5V3

As for my personal thoughts on the subject, I guess I'll toss out there that I've TL'd drama CDs before and I don't mind it at all as long as there's a script to work from. It's basically equivalent to translating an all-dialogue scene which is not too much different from usual work.

                      @jpwong

Interesting. I was not aware of those. So those are "Anime Edition Drama CD's", which is produced by anime team and there are two of them so far. Those CDs are promoted on the anime site, http://booklove-anime.jp/cd/, but they are not sold nor promoted from TO Books site.

The primary Drama CD, which is mentioned by the author is the one produced by TO Books, and there are current 5 of them. Drama CD 1 was on sale when P3V5 came out.

I really don't know the details of the contents of those CDs, and why there are two different editions of drama CDs. I know that author was heavily involved with the production of TO Book's drama CD, often take part in the recording to advise to the voice actors and often joined by Suzuka sensei. And both of them have written about their experiences of those recordings.

Fun fact. When author goes to the studio, ofter her husband drive her there (either, she cannot drive or she is just so horrible with directions). Big anime fan himself more than her and familiar with voice actors, he just tell his boss that he'll skip work to be her driver. His boss have no problem with that because he is a fan of Bookworm himself.

                      EDIT:

This description of CD1 has some more information - https://tobooks.shop-pro.jp/?pid=119567684

It is 60 minutes long, and contains "Digest story of P3V4 - P3V5"

@unknownmat Not really sure, it's apparent now after Quof's post these are something the anime put out totally separate from the drama cds that were put out for the LNs. All I can tell is that each of the two CDs has 3 drama tracks with the remaining tracks on the CD being the anime's opening and ending theme songs and a small assortment of mini soundtrack music.

I've seen other English translated series that have published drama CDs from the original JP, and do it as a video instead of audio (so that you have somewhere to put subtitles) and just have the cover art in the background for the video part. I'm all for that. As others mentioned, the subs need to be clear about who's talking since you can't actually see them talk, and it's sometimes hard to tell people apart by voice if you haven't watched the anime (or if they have different actors than the anime)

@pcj The only time I've seen that is with bootlegs on youtube. Don't believe a LN publisher has ever provided the audio with the translation of the CD (at least until the Rokujouma cds deliver).

@LegitPancake I don't remember LN publishers do it, either (except Rokujouma and drama CD scripts in Sister's all you Need), but there are few examples of them being included in DVD/BD releases of anime, such as The Hero is Overpowered, but Overly Cautious or FULL METAL PANIC! Invisible Victory. There are probably more examples, but they are tough to find.

I recall one of the XSEED blogs where they talked about localizing a game that had only the opening cutscene voiced in the original Japanese, even though there were lots of cutscenes afterward. The translator in charge of the project went to his manager and asked if they were going to bother voicing the opening cutscene. The manager basically went, budget it and see how much it'd cost and they'll make a call from that. The translator does that, and then comes back and makes a remark that, you know, for a bit more money, we could voice all the cutscenes, not just the opening one. The manager apparently just sighed and asked what that number was.

For some reason my imagination immediately envisioned a similar exchange happening between Quof and Sam, wherein Quof points out, you know, since you're stumping up for say CD1, it wouldn't be that much more to just stump for all of them, and Sam sighing and asking how much more it is.

@LegitPancake the one I remember seeing was an extra on an anime BD or DVD, but I don't remember what one now. I could probably find it if I dig through my library here but I'll likely not have the patience to attempt it :-)

I just wanted to note here that with P3V5 completed, now would be the right time to begin releasing the first drama CD, in case JNC happens to be looking into licensing these.

I honestly don't know how much influence these licensing suggestion threads have. But I do want to make sure that this thread is viewed by everyone who might have an interest and does not get buried beneath all the activity in the "Licensing Suggestions" forum.

I think having a translation of the Bookworm drama CDs would be fun, even if it's just the transcript.

In addition to the anime 'soundscapes' drama cd's and the LN-based drama cd's, there is also a drama cd that comes bundled with the Japanese version of the season 2 blu-ray. It's only about 20 minutes long and has two short stories.
