Publication Status of Deathbound Duke's Daughter

As far as I can tell, the second volume was released in Japan in 2017, and there doesn't seem to be any news of a volume 3 Japanese release. This was originally a Narou webnovel, so pretty sure there's content available to adapt into light novel form, figured some issue came up which made it stall for so long. Author seems to be alright since he's still active on Twitter. Anyone have any insight they can share?

@nightsandwich I don't really know about the LN, but I just want to add that the manga's first volume was just released, and the manga itself is still serialized in Monthly Action. Additionally, the Webnovel is on its last volume and is actively being updated weekly. It should end in a few months or so.
Good manga sales might encourage another LN volume.

Publishing new volumes could be possible if JNC license the web novel directly from the author and edit to a LN format, similar to Cross Infinite Worlds' practice for their direct WN-to-LN publications.

@lotteliese I imagine there'd be some licensing issues with the original Japanese publisher, so I doubt it will. Would be super amazing if it happens though.

@nightsandwich I'm guessing that Futabasha might only have the license for the published LN version volumes (first two arcs) which doesn't mean they hold the rights to the rest of the WN series.
Additionally Syosetu states that unless mentioned otherwise that authors hold copyrights of their works posted there.
Means it's not entirely impossible if JNC sales DDD makes it feasible to start this practice.

@terabyte It also came up during the last livestream I believe. The basic answer was "publishing WNs directly means we're directly competing with JP publishers, and that's not a good look."

It puts us in the position of being not only a localization publisher but also a full-fledge Japanese publisher, responsible for the editing/artwork, and relations with the author. That's not something we have any infrastructure for, and we can't just hire 2 people for a one off project.

It puts us in a position of competing with the publishers we are licensing from. Now, for cancelled series like Gear Drive, it's not necessarily a big deal, but once we have the structure in place, what's to stop us from grabbing the next big narou novel ourselves? What would our publisher partners in Japan think about that when we are competing with them for content?
Not a good place to be.

I really liked the first 2 books of Deathbound Duke's Daughter. I would definitely buy more books if j-novel could work with a JP publisher to get sequels published.

It does make you wonder what criteria the JP publishers use to determine if a novel will continue or not. You would think their overhead would be smaller than a US publisher because they don't have to translate it.

Except the JP publisher would have more direct management with the author and editor, plus they have to actually commission the illustrators, and also have to deal with other stuff like promotions and potential adaptations of their works, so... yeah, I'm pretty sure there's way more resources going into producing the original light novels in Japanese than there is in localizing them.

Same here.:) I would love it, if the light novel continues and we will see a third volume, a fourth volume, a fifth volume and a sixth volume (since apparently it will be completed with 6 arcs). And I would be very exited for the covers of volume 3 Erika Aurelia and the False Silver Vein and volume 4 Erika Aurelia and the Morgue of the Headless Prince (especially this title sounds like straight out of a horror movie). On the cover of volume 1 is the underground cathedral and on the cover of volume 2 the ancient cathedral. So I'm curious what will be on the covers of volume 3 and 4 in case they get published.

@nutaris Most likely sales expectations - how many actual copies sold relative to projected benchmarks, sales figures compared to other publisher titles, etc.
The Japanese LN market can be very competitive, with new titles having to compete against each other and established entrenched ones for reader attention.

I just reread the two available volumes and the new chapters of the web novel. I‘m craving so much for this novel, just why doesn‘t it continue?! I really hope after the author finishes the last arc, the light novel version will finally be continued.

@zz2000 You would think making an electronic version would be simpler, but too many publishers are stuck in the past.
