How are parts of expiring volumes determined?
-
I understand (mostly) when a volume being translated will be locked and the forum post listing upcoming expiration dates is helpful. However, just tonight I went to start reading volume 5 of Piggy Duke, but the part 1 was apparently locked yesterday (or maybe first thing today).
I believe that part was released on December 23rd originally. However there are still other part 1s released prior to the 23rd, including the latest volume of Cooking with Wild Game, which was released on the 22nd, that can still be read. It's frustrating not knowing when the first part of a book will be locked (or why), essentially locking the entire book as I don't want to start reading in the middle of the story.

@kurzaa I can access v5p1 just fine. Can you try logging out and back in again? Sometimes the authorization on the site goes a bit weird, although part 1 should always be available as a preview.

That is most definitely not intended. Part 1s are the free previews and are meant to stay free forever. I checked on the app and it's expired there. (Edit fixed by Mysk a couple minutes later).
Anyways, to answer your question, the pattern seems to be that a volume's parts will always expire the next 15th day of the month after volume release, except for when the volume releases on the 8th-15th of that month, in which case the parts will expire the 15th of the next month. Part 1s never expire, only parts 2+ do.

@georgemto thanks for the suggestion. I tried closing the app as well as signing out and restarting my tablet, but the part was still expired as of 20 hours ago and not letting me read the first part.
However, as I was first drafting a response, it occurred to me to check the website too and it looks like I can read the first part through the web page. Thank you for the advice, looks like it was a glitch specific to the android app.

Vol. 5 part 1 was accidentally not marked as a free preview; this has been fixed now, so you should be able to read it again.

I have seen a few (expired) volumes previously where the first part was not free. I agree that it should be as a marketing tactic, just like amazon offers sample chapters, but I could also see that as not always being the case. In this instance though, it appears to be a glitch in the android app and I can still read the part through the web thankfully.

@kurzaa If you have any examples that are still a problem, then you may as well mention them here. Free previews (part 1s) expiring is never intended, and are promptly fixed.

@myskaros yep, just checked and it is fixed for me now. Thanks for the quick turnaround, never imagined it to be a bug, let alone something fixed at midnight (east coast).
As someone else suggested, I will make sure to report any future issues like this that I stumble across. Have a great night.
