Monster tamer - does it stay grimdark? (No Spoilers please)

I've read up through volume 6, but drifted away because it felt like the main characters were set to spend the rest of their lives suffering.
Without spoilers, is there any light at the end of the tunnel aside from more oncoming trains?

Yes and No. It tends to fluctuate between dark, and the moments of light that they earn by overcoming the dark.

As Kotenmaru says, this series very much believes that its characters should earn their happy endings... but it's perfectly willing to give them a happy ending they've earned. There is one other wrinkle, but every single thing that could've been a diabolus ex machina (aka evil thing popping out of left field) thus far has been telegraphed in advance.
