Someone give me sales data for Chaos Child's VN and I'll see if I think 2000 people would buy it.

The problem with books like this is that ONLY people who played the VN would be interested, and the intersection between those people and people who would buy an ebook are fairly small. If 10,000 people played the VN, do you really think 20% of them would go out and buy the light novel? Did 10,000 people actually buy the VN and actually play through it?

Doing a spinoff is a good way to lose money, sorry raid people. Show me it can sell 2000 copies.

This isn't a raid, this is a C;C fan making a thread in a suggestions forum and telling fellow C;C fans about it. I am a paying J-novel club customer (started reading the beginning of Occultic;Nine on here when J-novel club first opened, then bought it both as ebooks on Amazon and, later, the print editions as they came out) and I genuinely want to read Children's Revive.

I am not saying that Children's Revive can sell - I assume you know better than any of us what kinds of books do well - or that I am entitled to a translation, just that I am interested in it, which I thought the suggestions forum was meant for.

Sorry if this post sounded hostile or snarky, I didn't mean it to.

And what of the people who watched the anime? As an extreme example, Type-MOON hasn't had a single visual novel released officially in English but thanks in part to anime the spinoffs are massive money printers even in the West. Admittedly Chaos;Child's anime reaches nowhere near the magnitude of popularity that the 2006 Fate/stay night anime or subsequent adaptations achieved, but the principle stands.

@alex-idv you can see for yourself how many people posting in this thread did it as their first post on the forums and just signed up. Obviously that’s not true for everyone posting here but there was an obvious call put out to members of a certain fan group to come and boost the topic.

Sorry if I’m coming off negative but you aren’t going to convince me licensing something is a good idea in this way.

So how did the anime do though?
All conventional wisdom I’ve heard is that unless it has “steins gate” in the title it does mediocre at best.

@microdynames type moon isn’t comporable and you know it. And I might mention that even if it was, how many of the light novels do we have in the West yet? Oh right, zero. And almost none of the manga.
Spinoffs of franchises are difficult sells even for huge ip like type moon. You are making my point.

Yes, I agree completely and said as much, and it was only an argument on principle alone. I haven't watched or played any of the Chaos series myself so I have no personal stake in this topic.

With that said, if you were of a mind to try to break the trend and go for some Type Moon light novels on the basis of them being the spinoffs least likely to lose money, that would be cool, yeah?

What kind of principle? C;C anime isn't that popular and anyone who watched it and wants more would read VN (because everyone would tell them it's much better and there's an English TL). Type-Moon is very popular and (English-speaking) people don't have much good options to read VNs, so they are more likely to read LNs if someone localizes them. That's like a total opposite of C;C case. Might as well bring Edge of Tomorrow as an example. On a principle alone.

The principle that a popular enough anime can displace the original VN as an entry vector to spinoffs, so not "ONLY people who played the VN" might be interested.

                                  C;C anime isn't that popular

                                  Absolutely.

and anyone who watched it and wants more would read VN

                                  Absolutely.

It might make mediocre sales in the mass market if you called it Edge of Tomorrow and put Tom Cruise on the cover, but that sort of disrespect for the original product would seriously offend the core LN base.

To reiterate I didn't say that C;C should be licensed on a principle, I only said that a VN isn't the only point of entry for "books like this" (i.e.. VN spinoffs). If you want my Chaos;Child specific opinion, I have already said in black and white that I don't think C;C anime reached these lofty heights. I just don't think the statement that "The problem with books like this is that ONLY people who played the VN would be interested," applies to ALL "books like this".

Perhaps what I really wanted to say was, "I hope you will consider Type Moon novels and not discount them for the same reasons as Chaos;Child CR".

@microdynames I get your point and the reason I’ve hesitated to go after them is more about the complicated licensing situation and how expensive I expect the character rights from aniplex would be.

@sam-pinansky It's gratifying to know that such novels have at least been under consideration, thank you for your reply.

I do hope that some day, complex rights ownership situations notwithstanding, something could be worked out for spinoff novels for established franchises; whether that would be Fate series, Steins;Gate series (the actual Steins;Gate, not the less well received Sci Adv entries), Muv-Luv series or others.

If only to try and expand the market past the core isekai fantasy and LitRPG diehards. That being said I'm sure you've already thought of that possibility or you wouldn't have acquired Occultic Nine at all.

@microdynames Well, Occultic;Nine was more just a matter of good timing. It was a property from Overlap which was a launch partner, it had an anime airing WHEN we launched, and seemed like something that could be popular.
But a very difficult episode 1 turned away the majority of the viewership, and we didn't get volume 1 out until after the anime had finished airing.
It's been one of our poorest selling books, volume 3 as an example had 21 preorders on Amazon. 21.
Compare that to preorders for the latest smartphone or realist that are 2000+.

@sam-pinansky So what that means is that, in order to prove that the Chaos;Child sequel is viable, the activists requesting its licensing should cast a proxy wallet vote by purchasing 2000 copies of Occultic Nine. :^)
