The Magician Who Rose From Failure volume 6 is now on amazon in Japan as of May 2023, so if could be 6-8 months before we see it translated to English if they follow the normal timeline

I know they say to not judge a book by its cover... but I totally do. And it looks like there will be more action in this volume than the previous one - though I enjoyed that one as well. It'd be good to see Arcus back in action. -
@Seleena Personally i just hope to see him kicking snob asses, you know he will trash many expectations.
Oh and that isn't even counting to the reveal that he invented the aethometer

That old expression might have been more useful before books had cover art and instead had a plain cover with maybe title and author.

And that's exactly why it's such a common expression. The point of a cover is to sell the book; what happens after doesn't really matter, you've bought the book.
Dunno the book circles you travel in, but the SF/Fantasy crowd I typically connect with has no end of complaints about covers that don't reflect the book content. A notorious example off the top of my head are the original Baen covers for the Vorkosigan books, up to Mirror Dance where they switched styles.

Again, the entire point of the book cover and flavor text is selling the book. If they get you to pick it up and read, they've done their job - even if they're wildly inaccurate.
As for long-term consequences of misleading covers... the fact of the matter is that for all the complaining, I've never seen any actual sales consequences from misleading covers. More to the point, the publishers who have actual access to all the sales data, and can do sales analyses, haven't changed the practice - which means it works. In particularly egregious cases, like the aforementioned Vorkosigan books, they do make changes, which means they're paying attention... but the overall 'put together something that sells, regardless of how accurate it is' policy still holds.

I really like that series, but yeah, for me a cover (at least for fantasy/sci-fi novels) is only to get my attention, if the cover looks interesting enough I'll read the summary from the jacket. I only assume that the cover has some passing relevance to the plot (like if it has a space ship on it, I assume it's going to involve spaceships somehow).

Arcus has a complex about looking like a girl/cute. He combats this in volume 6 by... growing out his hair and making him look more like a girl? NANI?

@Seleena I think the girl in the background is the School Master Granddaughter, that was mentioned in book 5 when they were talking about candidates for State Magicians

Wait are you guessing from the cover or did you read ahead? My hope is that even if he never manages to drop the girly face he does grow up, the whole thing of him practicing Knedo and his style aparently does require him to be bigger so i have been takig this as a hint to him growing at some point.

@luparguru if you're referring to the girl with black hair, that's Sue. Check out the illustration in volume 5, when Arcus is seeing his house for the first time, Sue is also there. It's a side profile, but her hair has the same ribbon tie, and she's in uniform.
@Adrian_V Just a tongue-in-cheek comment about the cover of volume 6.
If you click on the amazon.jp link from above, you can expand the cover. It looks to be the obligatory school arc (Sue and Arcus are both in a uniform). He's fighting someone, though it doesn't look like a life or death fight since Sue is cheering. He does have the anime drop of sweat in it, so he should be having a hard time, and it looks like he has long hair.
The comment about him having a complex about being cute is from volume 5, right as the students of Charlotte's family dojo are getting ready to "show him his place". The female students go into squee mode about how cute he is. Here's the passage :
He heard shrill cries of "how cute!" from them, presumable aimed at him. Truly, their words hurt more than the strike of a sword.
