Haruka Nogizaka's Secret
By Yuusaku Igarashi
Illustrated by Shaa
Published by Dengeki Bunko
16 volumesHaruka Nogizaka is rich, beautiful and popular. She's a total ojousama. Yuuto Ayase is her classmate, but he might as well live in a different world from her. There's no way they could ever have a conversation that last's beyond, "Hi, did you have a good weekend?"
At least that's what he thinks. But one day she drops her bag in front of Yuuto and he sees a light novel fall out. Yes, Haruka is a secret otaku -- and she's terrified her friends will find out and make fun of her, as happened to her in middle school. Yuuto promises to keep her secret and figures that's the end of it. But a few days later, the school announces a surprise bag inspection. If the teacher finds a light novel in Haruka's bag, he's sure to hold it up for the class to see, so Yuuto springs into action to save her reputation by taking the blame for himself.
This is one of those light novel series that had the misfortune to peak in popularity during the period when the US manga industry was imploding, but before fan translations became common. It's a straight up romance like Toradora, but the covers do feature cute girls flashing their panties, so it's sure to be a hit, right?
If a 16 volume romcom is too much for Sam, there is a sequel series involving Haruka's daughter that just started in the last year.

Panties on the cover? SOLD.

Here's a LNDB link for those interested: http://lndb.info/light_novel/Nogizaka_Haruka_no_Himitsu
The series, 16 volumes, is complete too.

Good lord it's been a while since I've seen this one mentioned. Loved the anime, always wanted to read the novel. +1
-
I think this has a sequel series.
Spoilering the title since it may spoil who she winds up with romantically (if that's in question):

It only just started, so just one volume.

Ah see it's mentioned. =]

@hisuis What can I say, I'm the guy who requests forgotten series that had three chapters translated on Baka Tsuki in 2011.
-
@sean-o-hara Nothing wrong with that, I remember enjoying the anime so I woldn't mind reading this. I hope J-novel club eventually gets to the point where it can take more risks and license some older series. In a way we are already seeing that with Demon King Daimaou, Sorcerer Stabber Orphen, and Outbreak Company.
-
@eternal-wanderer All of which are losing me money...
-
@sam-pinansky sad to hear that

hint hint: buy more... lots more!
-
@sam-pinansky I am really sorry to hear that.
I've been buying Outbreak Company and Demon King Daimau... guess I will need to go buy the ones I haven't bought yet. I love those series and am really glad you have been translating them. I've been buying premium novels in bursts, even on the series I have been keeping up on.
Sorcerer Stabber Orphen hasn't been released yet but I loved the anime and will get the books when they are available.
-
@Sam-Pinansky Darn! Don't say that the same day I request Chaika :*(
-
@hyperion Well I requested Scrapped Princess like 3 months ago and it only has 12 votes where the OP is a day old with 15 :*(
...
well, either way, it is around that point when suggestions start to plateau in up-votes.

@drone205 We will license the other sakaki works when we are done with outbreak. Unfortunately the bastard writes faster than we translate. So in order to actually do his entire body of work he must be prevented from writing more. Maybe I can get him arrested for firearms possession violation.
-
@drone205 This is more votes than any of my other suggestions has gotten. I guess panties on the cover really do make a difference.

That is not why I upvoted it. I loved the anime and want to know more because Haruka has a wonderful personality and the protagonist is a truly admirable person. Nothing like the disgustingly perverted protagonists that try to take advantage of situations (my opinion, others can like those protagonists if they want I just won't agree with you).
The series does have a running gag where people misinterpret what Haruka Nogizaka and Yuuto Ayase say together behind closed doors to be dirty when they are in fact doing nothing of the sort once everyone figures out what the context is. That running gag really gets annoying.
-
@sam-pinansky made me chuckle out loud.

Cover with cute half-naked girl + synopsis > writing a long thread about how this title touched you!
