Supermoon Catchups for August!
-
We've got two supermoons this August, on the 2nd and the 30th! If you need to pass the time waiting for them to show up, you can always curl up with one of this month's catchup series, which have pretty much nothing to do with moons!
First off, a tale of two Allens! Allen failed to join the royal court, and he somehow ends up at Duke Howard's mansion. The duke's daughter, Tina, can't use magic, and Allen has been hired to try solving the problem. How will his new job as Private Tutor to the Duke’s Daughter go? And another Allen was reincarnated from Japan after lamenting that there weren't hard enough games anymore. Now that he's in a new world with a Hell Mode difficulty rating! Will he be able to reach the top with only his wits to serve him? Check out the audiobook that was released recently as well!
If you're looking for reincarnation stories, we've got some more on the list! The Reincarnated Princess Spends Another Day Skipping Story Routes stars Princess Rosemary, the female protagonist of an otome game where all the male suitors are... undesireable. Can she skip all the story routes to find true happiness? With the series now complete, find out how it all ends! And in Saint? No! I'm Just a Passing Beast Tamer!, Kanata has excelled throughout her childhood, leading to speculation that she'll become a prestigious Saint, but no one knows that she really just wants to pet as many fluffy animals as she can get her hands on!
Finally, in the less conventional reincarnation space, we've got Doll-Kara, a manga about a fallen martial arts professional turned white collar criminal who finds himself in the body of a comatose high school girl! Can this new development rekindle the youthful passion of karate that the former adult lost in his career? And this title speaks for itself: Did I Seriously Just Get Reincarnated as My Gag Character?! University student Toru is hit by a bus and finds himself in his favorite VRMMORPG! However, he's not his invincible warrior but the dragon princess he created as a joke! Can she make the most of her new life?
While not calibrating your telescopes for these lunar phenomena, J-Novel Club members can check out all of the 31 volumes on catch up!

Reincarnated Princess Spends Another Day Skipping Story Routes and Reincarnated as my Gag Character both get high recommendations from me.
Skipping Story Routes is complete and it's a beautiful story from start to finish in the "reincarnated into an otome game" genre featuring a very intelligent girl who does everything she can to fix what's wrong in the world, whether it lines up with the original story she knows or not. And setting her romance sights on a side character who was never a romance target in the original story. She also fails to realize what a big deal she has become almost to the end.
Gag Character is a much much better story than the premise implies. Unfortunately it isn't complete and there hasn't been a new volume in a few years. The fact that it's on catch-up gives me hope that something is in the works, but you never know. The original premise is mostly left by the wayside relatively quickly near the beginning of the book, as the main character gets comfortable in their new skin and basically becomes that person, mostly forgetting their original Japanese life. It comes up occasionally but it's rare. The story is mostly the MC (who turns out to be almost omnipotent in this world) just wanting to live a peaceful life exploring the world with the cute elf girl that she rescued near the beginning, and of course accidentally being drawn into the various conflicts happening in the world. She is not a moralist (she won't save people just because it's the right thing to do) but instead gets involved in protecting the elf, helping the elf make peace with her family, and generally keeping the elf happy. Everything else comes along as a side effect when someone targets the elf, or the elf decides that she wants to help someone.

I had placed Reincarnated Princess on my "will not read" list at some point in the past with justification "uninteresting" (I keep record and always put a blurb to remind me why I decided so; might start noting the date too). I'll give it another try.
I can't be that optimistic about Gag Character. We've had the precedent of j-novel making discontinued series available on catchup, if memory serves. -
I am interested in knowing how large is your will not read list? I have a big enough problem with my want to read list! : )

With BG3 coming out this weekend I doubt I am going to have a lot of time to devote to this month's catchups. I may try Skipping Routes since it is small amount of volumes.

I don't remember if it's on J-Novel Heart or not, but it probably should be. It's very much a shoujo romance novel with a dash of adventure and magic and high stakes political maneuvering thrown in. That's kind of a specific niche and if that's not your thing it would definitely be uninteresting.

I clicked on skipping Routes and learned there are 8 or so volumes not 2 like I thought.

That makes it promising

I dropped out sometime around vol 3 or 4. The romantic bits were somewhat squicky, with a lot of unhealthy fixations; but the last straw for me was her father being an incredible ass.

For some reason, Reincarnated Princess just never really grabbed my attention. I read the first three parts and... just didn't bother coming back the next week.
The only one this month I've fully read is Passing Beast Tamer which... is an awkward series to read, honestly. Its so very, very fluffy that its hard to read in bulk (at least for me; I'm not the most fluff-tolerant reader on the site, honestly), but if you read it in little bits like we did in pre-pub, the fridge logic starts to hit you...
But if you need some fluff in your life and you don't mind turning off your brain and devouring fluff in big fluffy lumps, you probably won't be disappointed!

Hell Mode is the ultimate murder hobo grind series, in a good and fun way. It's more down-to-earth meat-and-potatoes than the literary fiction of TRPG. Monster girl romance free if that was something about TRPG that didn't work for you.
Gag Character is apparently cancelled, but I enjoyed the two volumes and it ends at a decent pause point. It was interesting to me in having an MC that at first acted as if bcoming their "gag character" was a tragedy, but through their behavior and some flashbacks we learn it was more like a blessing.
Passing Beast Tamer is fluffy, but isn't my cup of tea.

I thought the first 2-3 volumes were very good, but I drifted away after that myself. I plan to give it another chance.
Private Tutor - the main relationship grated on me (not a fan of dom /sub behavior though it wasn't quite that) but it's otherwise an interesting story.

Literal romance free if you ignore a certain minor character's side stories. Allen is in a committed relationship with the grind, no time for anyone else.

84 titles and counting - for a wide variety of reasons that I note down. They speak more to my tastes than to some attempt to fairly assess the writing. Sample - if there's a volume number, this is how long I lasted (you may be able to guess what some of the titles are, list in the alphabetical order from j-novel):
- V2.6 – Excellent writing, unique story, vivid characters … that I don’t care about. Too many gods are in play
- V4 – Don’t wanna read another Series of Unfortunate Events
- … - most basic, base revenge; repudiating
- V2 – entire cast of morons
- V4.1 - Unrelenting deluge of new characters. Main is rewired every so often one does not know who he is
- I am not sailing to Stockholm
- anime is so much better!
- V2.10 – I surrender to the aimless simplicity
- V2.4 – dropped after the harem beat up the MC for accidentally walking in on them changing
- mechas
- V3 … too many roses
- V4.6 … and dropped. they can all die in a forest fire and I would not care
- (Manga) – does not rise up to the LN
- (no reason listed)
- infantile
- not my cup of tea
- managed to V4P3 and dropped. Too boring
- discontinued after Vol 2
- feels wrong
- V2.5 – nothing happens
- repulsively violent
- V1.4 – Can’t plow through it
- yuri

Will the catch-ups change on Sept 1 or after the weekend?

@abcdave
Not sure. Last month’s catchup was released on August 1, 2023 @ 10:45 am. It’s currently 10:33 am us mountain time. If it doesn’t release today it probably won’t be until Tuesday. It would be nice to complete a few volumes over Labor Day.

@abcdave In any case, check the updates here. The home page has been updated late on occasion
