A++ list of catchups this time
Tearmoon and Apothecary are S tier, and S-rank is also greatwas not too keen on oversummoned, though. doubt I will give vol 2 a look. unless it somehow got way better after vol 1?
dunno much about Herscherik. how good is it?
-
@rkkn I found Herscherik to be good, well worth the read. It gets a bit dark in places but never goes full grim dark.

Yup!

I’m current with Apothecary and S-Rank (and enjoy both tremendously). I’ve been buying these series.
I loved Tearmoon when I started reading it long ago, but I’ve only read v1-3. I’ve purchased up through v9, so maybe I stopped reading it because I wasn’t having to rush through the pre-pub chapters since I owned the books. I read a number of pre-pubs which I have no interest in purchasing, so that takes up plenty of time. And then there’s Bookworm, which has very time-consuming forum discussions. It’s all Bookworm’s fault that I haven’t kept up with Tearmoon! :p
was not too keen on oversummoned, though. doubt I will give vol 2 a look. unless it somehow got way better after vol 1?
I’m reading the Oversummoned manga. It’s okay, but it hasn’t made me feel like investing the extra time to read the novels.

I think that I enjoyed the series for as long as it ran, but not enough to buy the books. Or maybe because it’s incomplete? I don’t remember. :p

I'm probably gonna give S-Rank Daughter another try this month. My first attempt at reading it didn't make it past Vol 1, but I'm assured the series is pretty good overall (and the plot that was annoying me isn't an ongoing thing through the series), so a definite re-read candidate there...
Tearmoon Empire's Manga is hard to recommend over the Novels, buuut the Novels also don't have this:
@TheGrimLich said in Tearmoon Empire (Manga) Vol 1:
Man, this manga is a treasure trove of faces and poses. Mia alone is so expressive she could put most anime characters to shame, and that "run away" illustration just proved it.
@Ojive said in Tearmoon Empire (Manga) Vol 1:
@TheGrimLich And now you see that I wasn't kidding when I called this 'Mia Makes Incredible Faces, the manga'! Good news: they only get better in the next couple volumes
So, Novel-only readers and non-readers alike, you'll probably enjoy this version too :)
As for Apothecary... The final line of my sig translates as Also, the Apothecary Diaries must be read. 😎 So, I await those of you willing to step into the palace of Not-China - and brave a world of courtesans, prostitutes, moderately-sized frogs, overly hungry food tasters, Go players, enough weirdos to build a Noble House, and enough poisons to kill one a dozen times over - in the volume 10 discussion thread.

If what annoyed you was "a series of coincidences keeps preventing the deuteragonists from meeting each other," then yes, it's only a thing in the first book.

I guess this will be a busy month. :) I either need to catch up with or am interested in reading pretty much all of these except for Oversummoned.
-
Ah, I know people love Tearmoon, Apothecary, and S-ranked Adventurer, but I feel like I just saw those in catchups over the past several months so seeing them again feels rather annoying. Really disappointed that I haven’t seen catchups for the LNs of Der Werwolf, Faraway Paladin, Apparently It’s My Fault My Husband Has the Head of a Beast, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, Demon King Daimaou, and multiple others.
Like it’s cool to pull people in to subscribing with the current hot stuff, but…all at once….and again? Don’t feel shy about delving into the archives instead of just switching back and forth between the LN & manga of the popular ones.
-
@CatCatCat I think those are on catch up this month because they all have anime adaptations that are coming out now, so that once people check out the anime if they want to read the source material from the beginning
-
This post is deleted! -
@Lily-Garden That’s fair. Guess I do the same thing with other LN and manga, and I know how aggravating it is not to be able to read source material.

Apparently It’s My Fault My Husband Has the Head of a Beast
I've never actually read this, but the title pops into my head every time "animal husbandry" comes up

Considering it was (presumably) axed after vol. 2, it probably isn't going to cut it. There were a few gags I liked, and even answers a few questions from vol. 1 I didn't think it would get to. There are tons of loose ends, of course, but the only thing I'm really left wanting to know is what the deal is with one of the new characters.

Tearmoon manga and S-Rank Adventurer have both never been on catchup. Tearmoon's LN was last on catchup 15 months ago in July 2022. Apothecary Diaries was last on catchup 22 months ago in December 2021. These are not recent reselections.
Faraway Paladin was last on catchup November 2021 (with its manga the month before that), so that's basically the same time period. Apparently It's My Fault My Husband has the Head of a Beast was September 2021, a little longer since it's over the 2 year mark, but still not much more than Apothecary. Other two, certainly a lot longer.
I'd expect Faraway Paladin to come on catchup either next month or the one after to coincide with its anime s2 (unsure if they'll pick just one of LN or manga) just like many members of this batch are highlighting this one.

i had dropped the novel for this exact reason but had second thoughts and was waiting for a catch-up to give it a second try. Staring with the second volume.

S Rank is very good.
For me, Oversummoned started out very promising but fell to pieces at the end of volume one because of the mindset and behavior of the MC. Volume two did not get better.

Seriously, he is incredibly unlikable. The former Demon Lord in volume 2 was a much more interesting character than the MC.
I've been wanting to read through S-Rank for a while. I bought the first book a month or two back, and enjoyed it. So S-Rank being on catch-up is great.
-
You are all making this so hard! I have been pushing my regular Fantasy & SciFi backlog lately (working on Valor from the Faithful & Fallen series by John Gwynne, and also finishing the last 4 books in the Cradle series by Will Wight).
But now I want to try to catchup on S Rank but there are Ten Volumes I would have to read. Last time I did a big push on a catchups was Altina the Sword Princess. I was thinking that I could watch the S Rank anime debuting this month instead but it probably will never carry that far into the full story.
-
@geetop definitely check out S-ranked Daughter if you can; for a fantasy LN it is really well-written and the characters are great (and not cardboard cliches)
