List of Discontinued JNC LN's
-
I just finished reading volume two of Retired Demon of the Maxed Out Village, and saw that that was most likely all there was going to be. It made me curious if there's a list of series on JNC that have not been "completed" but would most likely not be seeing any further volumes released.
While Retired Demon didn't have a clear over-arching plot, it had hinted at bits of one. It certainly suggested that there would be a certain amount of volumes corresponding to the plot-element armors introduced. So, It bummed me out a bit to see this was most likely it.
In an attempt to not unknowingly end up in this situation again, I thought it'd be useful to have some sort of compiled list of JNC series' that are discontinued but not finished.
(side question, when JNC adds a "completed" tag on a series, is that just confirmation of no further volumes or can I assume the story was finished).
-
That is a huge gray area and probably why there hasn't been a comprehensive list. It's really hard to tell when something is actually finished or when the author is just taking forever to write the next volume. There's been cases of series where they usually release a book every 3 to 6 months and then don't have one for 3 years and everyone thinks it's been abandoned only for a new volume to suddenly show up, so....

Totally makes sense and is definitely true. I guess calling them stalled versus completed makes more sense. Unless we know something's actually cancelled.

Thanks. This is a very handy reference.

You can also sort by the "On Hiatus" button in the Publication Status section on the series page. This shows series that usually haven't had any new releases for at least a year.

Thank you for this. Not a setting I'd spotted before.

Some stalled / hiatus series are well worth reading, so if you see that and it looks interesting you might want to start a thread here like "Is X worth reading (no spoilers)?" You'll miss out on some good ones if you decide to skip all stalled series.
People will often also suggest good points to stop, like "volume 3 wraps up the invisible carrot arc" or "watch out, 4 ends on a bad cliffhanger."
-
That list leaves me vaguely depressed, so many series I loved that are stalled out.

Honestly, I only agree to a point. They can be worth reading, but if there's not going to be an end for a story that has an over-arching plot then I would say it's probably not worth reading. Maybe worth seeing if there's a web novel that's complete, but not worth investing into something that's going to leave you hanging without a resolution it promised.
If it's something that's much more focused on episodic story telling, then I can certainly see the merit in still giving it a chance.

That was such a great series. It really is a shame that the author decided to jump the shark with volume 4. Ruined an otherwise epic salad of a tale.

I have to admit, you give LNs far more credit than I do. I've see very few having an over-arching plot beyond a very early mention of there being X McGuffins. Which is then turned into basic excuse plots for the MC to collect and/or interact with. Usually the ones with a well put-together plot don't have the problem of getting discontinued.
What I see most LNs having is a premise... of some quality... and an execution on that premise with vastly more variability in quality. Which leads to it not finding the necessary audience to support it and/or the writer getting permanently stuck on how to progress. Leading to the vast majority of series that lack a future.
@venerablemonster I don't believe that the On Hiatus list is in any way exhaustive. Only series that have been manually tagged as such.
-
@endoftheline Yea, you aren't wrong. Haha.
Also, re: On Hiatus, you're right. I looked over the list and saw stuff on there that's not really on hiatus either, unless it is from the JNC side. Welcome to Japan was the one that stuck out to me since it's been getting regular annual releases since mid-2020 in Japan, including one that released a few months ago.

It's definitely subjective, but I can look back at a number of series like Deathbound Duke's Daughter and Me, a Genius?! and say that I'm glad that I read what was released, even as I mourn the volumes I'll never get to read.
-
@venerablemonster Anything listed as "completed" is either declared finished by the author or officially axed by the Japanese publisher, and completely translated.
The biggest problem is that one of the publishers, as well as more than a few authors, never officially end series, instead leaving them in permanent hiatus.
Even then, there has been at least one case where a series was marked complete, only to have one more volume released...
-
@venerablemonster This comes down to personal preference in the end, as for example, Rokka no Yuusha very much does not have a satisfactory ending to its over-arching plot and almost certainly never will, but I could count on my hands the number of LN series that I've found as/more worth reading than it was.
On the original question, here's a list of series which aren't or at least are in doubt of being complete and haven't released in over a year, ordered by last volume release date (according to Bookwalker):

Some things I think are slightly out of date on the reddit page:
"Lucia and the Loom" is no longer stalled as of Dec 23 with vol 3 released. Also Demon Lord Retry vol 9 in Oct 23. And Magic is Too Far Behind v10 had a release date announced the other day though I guess maybe you'd want to wait till actual release to update that. So, that's 3 rescued from stalled status.
And "Marriage, Divorce and Beyond", "A Royal Rebound", "Fake Saint of the Year", "The Reincarnated Princess Spends Another Day Skipping Story Routes", "Forget being the Villainess, I Want to be an Adventurer", "The Master of Ragnarok", "Magic Knight of the Old Ways", "Der Werwolf", "Fake it to Break it" & "Stuck in a Time Loop" are all completed in Japan I believe.
I see the page waits till translation finishes to mark them, but that still leaves Ragnarok, Skipping, Rebound, Forget Being the Villainess & Old Ways which are all done now. S-Rank Daughter is marked complete on Bookwalker, but there is a recent SS volume so I don't know if that makes it count as still ongoing."Safe & Sound in the Arms of an Elite Knight" seems to be missing - it's complete at 3 volumes, though not yet in English.
Everything else is either already tagged complete/cancelled on there or is ongoing with a release within the past year.
-
Altina has statements from the author specifically saying it's not complete and will have more coming... eventually. But they're busy with another series that's more of a cash cow right now, and they'll get back to it after that's done.
Deathbound Duke's Daughter really felt like it had a huge well thought out plot. That's part of why it hurts so bad that it's sitting unfinished.
-
@TheWickerMan
FYI, Death's Daughter and the Ebony Blade new volume is already announced for Feb. 25 2024.You can find it here and search for the JP title.
They have the same date as Realist Hero and Magic is Too Far Behind. -
@TheWickerMan - for these the main story is finished even if there is more material in after stories, side stories, or other extra materials.
- The Reincarnated Princess Spends Another Day Skipping Story Routes
- Arifrueta.
-
Some of the series listed like Mapping, Piggy Duke and GM has logged into another world I consider as complete. They might not adapt all the material from the respective web novels or resolve all the plot points introduced, but from what I remember it was quite clear the author's tried to reach a good enough stopping point and there is no plan to write more volumes.
As others said, there are quite a number of series I'm currently enjoying on the stalled list and that makes me disappointed. I'm even thinking if it's worth to keep reading them since they might never reach a proper conclusion...on the other hand, some if my favorite series like Highschool DxD are also on hiatus but I would've regretted never reading them.

Curious, what is that as a %? Like JNC already filters for things they think will be successful, but it seems like a huge % of works still don't make it to the end.
