I know it's rather late, but thanks a lot for the kind well-wishes, :) I really appreciate them.

The first round results are just around the corner now. For those who aren't able to progress to the second round, I was thinking we could organize something to give feedback to those who request it. Anyone else out there interested in volunteering for this? I intend to help, but I tend to disappear suddenly whenever I get a FM and/or ME flareup, or wind up in the hospital.

I would volunteer and most probably put my work in this channel, too

            Hi there,

Glad to see you around Alfaerin and look after yourself. This is kind of what we want to do with proposed review and feedback thread.

Just a note of caution - we need to ensure that we can share our stories if/when they don’t continue in the competition. Normally, you have to wait until the competition is finished for several reasons (including avoiding debates around did and did not progress).

I definitely think we can support each other here and recognise that there are many reasons why works may not progress which aren’t just about the quality of writing.

They are cutting from around 500 to around 100 so 4/5 stories won’t go through the first gate which can’t all be based solely on poor writing (and I’m pretty sure most of the people on here won’t be knocked for their writing quality alone).

We should also probably wait for a public announcement of who is progressing before sharing - even if we have personally received an email. We don’t know how they will be getting in touch with everyone or whether timing may be affected by the public holidays.

Good luck everyone. Only a couple of weeks to go.

As I’ve said several times on here, I want to progress but even if I don’t, the competition itself was worthwhile and I have already started on submissions for the next one.

Thanks again ^^ I already asked about privately sharing our works for feedback purposes, and was told that was okay. They just don't want us making our work public while it's being judged.

@Alfaerin Yeah, sharing the title and summary is fine, and privately sharing to other people or getting advice from others is also perfectly okay.

We've been kicking around some ideas, but haven't really set anything concrete in motion just yet. So I was thinking we ought to iron out something in time for the results of the first round of judging., and probably make a new topic specifically about offering feedback to those who didn't make it past the first round. I'd like to say I can live with it if I don't progress, but well... I really entered hoping to win, because I need money to pay for medicine and treatments I need.

Thanks for asking about what rules @Alfaerin.

Let’s use this as an opportunity to solidify the things we’ve been chatting about for a while. I’ll look to set up a thread on the weekend (this gives me the push to move things forward).

So, just how broad is the “support” in the JNC Support Group? I just watched the finale of Frieren and I think Apothecary Diaries is tomorrow and I need support! Anyone have anime suggestions for someone who likes watching warm stories that have just enough of an edge they you don’t feel stupid for watching them (I may just have to rewatch Bookworm)?

If folks think this is going too far off topic let me know. Yes, there are probably more specific threads for this, but I think part of support is talking to folks you know a little bit, instead of just posting a bunch of different questions on different forums —if I wanted to do that then I could probably ask questions to a chatbot. Anyway, there are not a lot of other discussions going on and discussing what makes a good story (or at least stories we like) is not that far off-topic—(not the worst way to pass the week until we get the first round results!)

I haven't watched Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel Northern War but I have played the games the anime is based on. Even though the story deals with heavy themes like war, there is usually a large amount of optimism and demonstrations of the power of friendship.

For an older series, maybe Fruits Basket though that one makes me cry. It's warm, but also sad.

Ask away. I was debating going to some ‘comfort’ watches like Laid Back Camp or Otaku Elf seeing if any new ones appear to help avoid needless pacing.

I don’t know if Kaguya - Love is War fits your description but it certainly becomes more fun the further you get into it.

@strangeattractor I am giving Fruits Basket a try—just started the first episode—if nothing else, the animation is pretty!

@Damon-Cavalchini I enjoy watching Love is War—but Takagisan was my can’t-miss for the genre.

I will look at the others as well. Thanks!

@jazzyjeoff Which Fruits Basket? The original or the recent remake? It might get me condemned but I actually prefer the remake.

I meant the original. I didn't know there was a remake.

@admin Would it be a problem for writers to make their own threads about their stories when they want to request feedback? Or should we keep all of the feedback discussion contained to one or two threads?

Edit: As per the suggestion made by @morbelek below, would it be possible to create a sub-forum dedicated to writing discussion?

Not sure what admin will say, but It might be good to have separate threads that you can link to when needed. It could get confusing otherwise. Maybe whoever is in charge of the master thread can have list of stories to be reviewed at the top of the master thread and update it as needed. Folks can mention their stuff occasionally on the master thread, but detailed discussions could be on separate threads. Anyway—it’s an idea.

@jazzyjeoff That's what I was thinking too, but Damon Cavalchini was concerned the moderators might not be happy with it if too many threads get made. So I thought it would be best to get permission in advance if possible ^^

@jazzyjeoff @Alfaerin See if the moderators can make a dedicated sub-forum in the other discussion. Like how Manga Discussion, Prepub Corrections, and Ascendance of a Bookworm are their own category because of how big they are.

I doubt they care. It’s not contaminating any of their important threads and it keeps paid eyeballs on the forums—it’s a cheap win for them. Anyway, we will hear from them if they are upset (don’t ask me how I know! 🤪)

                                          @jazzyjeoff @Alfaerin and everyone else

Great points. Maybe we can keep this thread for general discussion and encouragement (especially for next week) and the forum (great idea) dedicated to actual stories, reviews and feedback. That way we can a specific thread for a work (e.g. all the chapters in the same thread or a standalone short story or similar).

I am nervous about the potential proliferation of threads but if we can contain them then that would be great.

Alright, the review thread is officially live! As mentioned in the new topic, please wait for @Damon-Cavalchini to post the first response. That post will be edited to include a list of works awaiting review. Let me know if anyone has any questions, corrections, or suggestions!
