Yup, that's right the library is where you can download epubs and find out if your epubs have been updated. You can then use PC based epub readers, read them on your phone using apps like Moon+ Reader for Android, or at least for now unofficially use Calibre to transfer them to your Kindle. Amazon currently also allows you to upload epubs up to 200 MB via their website which will then be added to your Kindle: https://www.amazon.com/sendtokindle
For the avoidance of doubt, this is only for e-books you buy directly from JNC (known as premium edition digital books). This does not apply to prepub books you can temporarily access due to your subscription (including rentals) or to books you buy via third party stores like Kindle, Kobo, etc. You cannot download prepub books or rentals, and have to read them using the JNC website or the official or third party apps.
