@Aruseus493 That's grant to hear. Let's hope J-Novel picks up licensing cause let's be honest. This is like low-key Bookworm level goldmine we're talking about here.

Only discovered this series recently, and I would certainly love to see it get picked up by J-Novel. Its a pretty charming easygoing MMO story with a much more slice of life focus - think of it as similar to Bofuri but a little more easygoing and the main character not being OP at all.

Please pick this up. If laid back tamer got licensed then this one should too. Already at 22 volumes in Japan

I would love if you picked this series up. You picked up Aloha Zachou’s other work Making Magic, and I love their writing style.

I absolutely love this series. The Fan TL was fantastic but unfortunately only went up to volume 11, so seeing an official release would absolutely make me preorder all of the books - would 100% reread it and even buy a physical release if one happened. There's just some charm to this VRMMO series that pretty much everything else in the genre is lacking, so I'd be super excited if it happened!

Just finished a binge re-read of the old fan-translations. Sure wish this series would be licensed as it continues to be such a fun series with excellently designed game mechanics, and a world I've love to see explored more.

The cover for volume 24 is out. The volume releases on the 20th in Japan. Sure would be nice if JNC would license it. It totally fits all the regular check boxes after all. (It's got cooking and pets too for those that love that stuff.)

I do not feel pets & cooking are sort of attractive items to mention, to make one interested for a series. Though I would like to know more, so if anyone is willing to share more like I did for Pens Down, Swords Up that might help...

24 volumes is already sort of a sign that for some reason it must be popular.

Yea, some links probably need to be updated since LNDB died years ago. Kadokawa also had their big hacking/meltdown which caused them to reshuffle some sites.

It's a minor part of the series. I'm only mentioning it as a jab/joke at JNC's licensing strategy. Pet and/or Cooking series tend to sell well enough for JNC to license one nearly every licensing event. So while you and I might not be people that these series appeal to, it's certainly a viable strategy to trick convince JNC to license OSO.

Though I would like to know more,

A lot of us have talked about why we love and want the series in the earlier comments in the thread. To reiterate my own opinions though, it is my favorite VRMMO series out there. It is the only VRMMO I feel that actually has a well-designed game system meant for gamers to enjoy. The story itself is quite fun and relaxed as it's a slice of life series where the protagonist really does enjoy themself.

In regards to the game system, I find a lot (the vast majority) of VRMMO series tend to just be fantasy worlds with loose game systems. They typically aren't designed to actually be very fun when you think about them. There's apparently some history in that these kinds of games did exist at one point in Japan's history of MMOs. But I always found them to be based on just making the protagonist some unique existence in the game which kind of defeats the ability for other players to achieve a similar status.

In Only Sense Online, the game system is actually designed from the perspective of letting players come up with their own unique play-styles, but without locking them in, or others out. The whole system is based on spending skill points to equip skills and exploring the grand skill tree of mix and matching skills. (EXP Is Golden has a similar, but more puzzle-like system.) So players can equip super specific combos of skills, and freely swap them out to find their preferred play style. There isn't some unique aspect that makes the protagonist impossible to replicate. It's simply that no one is interested in learning or experimenting to replicate their play style as everyone is already developing their own.

In regards to the story itself, it's a really enjoyable slice of life series about playing the game. Yun is a relatively easy going protagonist that enjoys the game at his own pace mostly as a crafter. There's a lot of enjoyment in just reading about his experiments with potion brewing and crafting in general. But they do have friends and family, and will go on quests and adventures with them which brings some good action into the story too. Through these adventures, you can really enjoy how fun a lot of the quests and regions are as players are always slowly expanding the world.

So ultimately, OSO is in my Top tier of series I want licensed. Its game design from the author makes it the one VRMMO I would actually want to play in real life if it existed. And I also find the story a perfect balance of relaxing and fun. I own all the JP volumes for the sake of collecting them, and I would love to be able to read the series officially in English.

24 volumes is already sort of a sign that for some reason it must be popular.

This is unfortunately a demerit to English publishers like JNC. Licensing longer series means longer commitments to having staff translating volumes. In addition, the longer a series is, the fewer subsequent volumes will sell. (People aren't as likely to start series in the middle after all, but people will drop stuff after x amount of volumes.)

@Aruseus493 hmmm you are not wrong about the thing about longer series.

I personally never have seen it like that. If a series is good, I prefer to follow it to the bitter end, though I have dropped many series by now which failed to deliver 2-3 volumes in a row where I do not think there is room to recover from that.

Especially when I recognise the "king's road-pattern", which I have mentioned here https://forums.j-novel.club/post/406689 and it is not to my liking. There are sure novels which keep that going in a fun way like Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers. But you either like or hate them.

Interestingly, most "good" MMO based stories have always as basis Ragnarök Online and Phantasy Star Online, newer ones even Final Fantasy XIV - in case you are interested in those games.

I am still fondly remembering Ragnarök Online, the way it was back then when hundreds of players have e.g. gathered for weekly market in Alberta and many other stories from back then. Mixed with "Japanese D&D"-culture (which is base for Record of Lodoss War).

And yeah, such communities still exist nowadays, but it is hard to get entry from the west due to various reasons.

Kinda sad that the web version of the novel - I just checked - seemed to have stopped in favour for the print version. I hate that. Do you know by chance more how far the web version gets into the print version?

Sorry, no idea. I can't read Japanese, so I've got no way to get a reference for where either version is. (if I could, I wouldn't be here promoting OSO so heavily.)
