J-Novel 2026 Contest Novel Question
-
The contest guidelines state: "Works which have previously been published for profit are ineligible for submission. This includes works that were self-published on sites which monetize the sale or streaming of the work."
I have a novel that I previously self-published years ago, but I have since unpublished it from the two websites where it was available for purchase. The novel is no longer being sold or monetized.
I have largely rewritten the novel and would like to submit the revised version to the J-Novel Club Contest. The version I intend to submit is substantially different from the previously self-published version, including the character names, the plot, and the chapters, etc. In other words, I would not be submitting the previously published version, but a completely redrafted version of the story.
-
- Would the revised version be eligible for submission under the contest guidelines, given that it is no longer the same version that was previously self-published and the original version is no longer available for purchase?
-
- Or does the prior monetized self-publication make any completely revised version ineligible?
If anyone can clarify this, I'd greatly appreciate it!
