Bluesteel Blasphemer- wasn't orphaned but ending was rushed due to cancellation by original publisher . I was worried about Mixed Bathing but that's due for updates soon
I still have my fingers crossed that WataFuta either gets started again...although I know the odds are waaaaaaaay long

@jon-mitchell I don't know if I'd call [New Life +] orphaned. There are 18 volumes. Sam just isn't allowed to translate them. I'd like to see more Gear Drive too. That was a fun first volume. As for Watafuta, I think the author got boxed in by the changes between the WN and the LN. I'd like to see a third volume, but I'm not holding my breath.

@paul-nebeling I think orphaned in the sense that it stalled in Japan is what he means. We don't know if it's straight up cancelled by the publisher at this point, or if they might return to finish the series. Sadly, Japanese publishers are very notorious about dropping series without ever letting readers know. Sol Press' first two licenses seem to be similar orphaned titles. (I feel like Overlap in particular is bad about starting a lot of series they don't continue.)

I'd say about as orphaned as Amagi Brilliant Park and Clockwork Planet. Take that how you will~ It's up for debate since these are all "notable" series but yet still have pretty much stalled while readers are under the belief that they'll continue at some point. -
To clarify, what I meant ‘orphaned’, I meant a series that one started reading a volume or more and for whatever reason cannot read anymore of. A cancelled series is orphaned, a series that the author gave up on would be orphaned etc. New Life+ is orphaned because I cannot read ongoing translations ( it isn’t relevant that they may exist in Japanese or as a web novel, my enjoyment of them as licensed translations is effectively over, therefore orphaned)

@jon-mitchell Mixed Bathing is actually caught up to the WN in Japan, hence why new volumes had slowed down significantly.

@jon-mitchell Then you can add Ao Oni to the list, since there's one more volume that JNC didn't translate as it was rebooting the serie.
And maybe JK Haru as the author published a second book but not with a publisher.

we can go around and around about the definition of the term- how about this:
what series have you started and felt that you were 'left hanging'? The volume didn't have a satisfying stopping point, maybe it ended on a cliffhanger, maybe without a central plot point being resolved, and the next book just isn't happening?
For example the 'Game of Thrones' books (or more properly A Song of Ice and Fire) before HBO decided to do their thing, there was outcry within the fan community about how long volumes were stalled (a 5 year gap between vol 3 and 4, and 6 years between 4 and 5. Many feared that this series would be orphaned/forever incomplete, and that the author might pass away before it was done (The author say he has 2 more volumes in the pipe - and that the story diverges significantly from the HBO version)
A LN example, The Familiar of Zero, the author, Noboru Yamaguchi, tragically passed away. 20 volumes (and several side story volumes) were in print at the time of his death. IIRC a couple of volumes came out based on his notes/outlines but I don't know if volume 22 is the conclusion of the story (or if the author outlined a conclusion at all)
WataFuta, the example that started this thread for me, we're left hanging (did it not sell well and author went on to something else?) Creative issues re webnovel vs LN aside, if the series was popular enough/sold well enough, it would seem to me that the author would make it happen
regardless - what orphans are most heartbreaking to you? Which series that may be on hiatus (but not 'dead') do you most want to see resume? (Gear Drive and Mixed Bathing already mentioned - but feel free to add reasons or titles of your choice)
I know it's a catch 22, we want series to be picked up and not every one will continue (in a format that can be licensed) but one cannot always know before you license it, plus there's always the hope that the fact that JNC picked up a series boosts its overall popularity (maybe wishful thinking on my part) making continuation more likely (?)

Yes, it is the conclusion, and yes, author made as many notes as he was able. Unfortunately, whoever completed the story made a pretty lazy job, so vol.22 looks more like a draft definitely in need of some editor's love and rewriting. But still, ZnT is completed, that's already much more than I was hoping for.
Kaze no Stigma, unfortunately, didn't get that chance.

Sam said something about sales on Curious Cat (but that may have been how the question was phrased leading him to that response).
I think Gear Drive is still active on Narou, so I remain optimistic too.

@jon-mitchell Familiar of Zero did have a conclusion due to the author leaving notes about the ending novels. An example of one that was just abandoned is Kaze no Stigma which, to my knowledge, doesn't have a conclusion after the author died.
Another little tidbit I found out about Game of Thrones is that fans are sending the author healthy diet suggestions and other health facts as they are actually scared he will pass on before finishing the series.

Gear Drive I've already indicated I want to continue, I was actually buying it.
Same but different with Clockwork Planet - I had the vibe that it was more hiatus as the authors are only doing it as a side project, the notes at the end of every volume very comically paint a picture of them half-arsing it when the editor gets around to twisting their arms to spit out a new volume. So I think those waiting for it will be waiting possibly years, but it feels less up in the air to me than Gear Drive does for example. I could be totally wrong on that of course.

self published? or just a WN? regardless - as of today JNC has picked up another JK Haru volume. I don't know if it's thge same one you are referring to or what its providence is.
