Arifureta main vs zero
-
Do you prefer the arifureta main series or zero series and why?
-
I prefer the main series because there's better romance and flirting.
-
Both have their perks, but personally I do prefer the main series as I have fond memories of the original web novel and the relevant romances that blossomed within it.
Truthfully, it is rare for me to have preference of the "zeroes" or prequels novels, even in western literature i.e. I prefer the LOTR over the Hobbit. -
This is a pet peeve of mine, the Hobbit is not a prequel it was the original work the lord of the rings was the sequel written almost 20 years later.
-
I like the main series more, but I really like zero too. Often prequels/spinoffs suck, but this one kinda complements the main series IMO
-
I like the main series better. I enjoy Zero but things just don't feel the same without Hajime and co and all the pop culture references.
-
@catstorm but in the time line it would be considered the prequel, just as the other recently released stories like the Similarian etc would be prequels as they go before the story. LOTR is the main story by Tolkien, everything that is written in the background and the lore is to lead to that point.

While I understand what you mean, in my experience a prequel is generally understood to mean a sequel that is chronologically set before the original. As such, it is confusing to refer to The Hobbit as a prequel.
As per Wiktionary prequel is "Most often used, not as a direct antonym of sequel, to refer to earlier works in a series, but to refer to works that are chronologically before but are created and released after".

I've read only two volumes of Zero versus nine of the original series so the comparison is a bit unfair, but I like more the latter. Some reasons are: it's a true harem opposed to Zero when we are probably going to have at most an implied romance between Miledi and Oscar, I prefer a male main character, and being a prequel I already now that Zero won't have an happy ending since the Liberators didn't succed in their mission.
-
I actually can't make myself read Zero. We already knew from main Arifureta that things are pretty much going to end in tragedy for all the cast of Zero, so I want to avoid getting invested in those characters.
-
There is Arifureta main and Arifureta After Stories.
Arifureta Zero existence is not warranted. -
I think not warranted is harsh. Some people would love to know more about the lore and this is a way of providing it.
In terms of zeroes, only Fate Zero has ever garnered my attention. -
I think I like Zero more than the main series, they read better and are quite fun to read from start to finish. I feel like Miledi is the author's spirit animal and is having a ball writing those stories. The lack of Kouki also helps.
I do like the main series tho, but I can feel how the author improved imo. Things like character development can be occasionally uneven in the main series: Shea had great character development, whereas Yue is almost the same after 9 volumes. On Zero things are better organized and makes me care quite a bit about the characters.
That said, the main series has Shizuku, which makes it difficult for me to decide, but I'll still go with Zero.
-
The only flaw the main series has is the existence of Kouki. He's a prick.

I want her to come back in some meaningful way in the main series. She' still chillin in her dungeon, so maybe she does an epic heroic sacrifice to save someone during their final battle with the shitty gods? (Haven't read the WN so NFI)
-
@smashman42 That would be awesome. "Remember me, Asshole?"
-
@smashman42 I fully expect for Miledi to make some prank on Ehit in the Zero novels. I wouldn't be surprised if there is another in the main series.
I liked the small scene from Volume 8 with Miledi, so perhaps we'll have something.
-
@crimson-wise That's what made me hope the author is planning to bring her back. Was like a teeny cameo just teasing Miledi fans
