One day the high-school student Yachi Haruaki received a mysterious black box sent by his father from abroad. It was a “Cursed” object which could assume human form. The black box whose name was Fear came to Haruaki wanting to rid herself of the curse. Together with Haruaki and his boarder Konoha, Fear decides to do helpful things in order to neutralize the negative energy that was built within her, to be free from the curse that bound her.
I wasn't sure if this one has been posted here yet, But I remember watching the anime version many years ago and enjoying it a lot. Its pretty old by now since It originally came out in 2007 but I'd love to be able to read this someday, so I'm posting this here to see how much interest there would be in this series.

I enjoyed it a lot but there's a full decent fan translation so I fear it wouldn't be profitable
-
Yeah the fantranslation doesn't give me a lot of hope for this series, But I still think you have people who want to read stuff legally. I'd be happy to buy official translated books of this series.

The question is if there are enough people to make the title profitable. I wonder how much it takes to bring a LN from Japan to English digital. Anyway, I avoid fan translations, and I enjoyed the anime. I'll vote for this one.

Sam has answered this question before, and it usually takes about 2000 digital sales for every volume. I doubt there are 2000 dedicated fans who would buy all 17 volumes. Even franchises with large fan bases like FMP and Crest of the Stars have only sold a couple hundred ebooks each for JNC.

You are talking about franchises that already have fan translations available, correct? Otherwise, JNC wouldn't be making money. SOMETHING... most things, even... have to be selling over "2000" copies.

@farmerdad Or Smartphone is subsidizing a lot of other stuff.

That would be bad business sense. Sure, some titles will flop, and not every title will be a mega-hit but the majority of the titles have to at least break even for the business not to go belly up and most of them have to turn some sort of profit. If it were my business and 2000 is the magic breakeven number, I would like the titles to average 4000 or more copies. If I don't think a title can garner 4000 sales, I would think more than twice about licensing it. A title like (I assume) Smartphone might cushion the blow of FMP and CotS not reaching 2000, but it that just keeps the business from failing. It does not make a good business model.

The variable we’re not discussing is 2000 copies over how long? Sam may be ok with FMP taking years to get to 2000 copies sold if having that title draws in customers that buy other things, or cements a relationship with an agent/publisher/author that leads to access to other, more popular franchises
