Would you buy manga adaptions of light novels?

There's a few series out there where I enjoy the manga more than the LN, so I think it's really a case by case basis for me

Absolutely. I prefer light novels, my best friend prefers manga. We'd have a lot more stories to chat about if more of them came in both flavors.

@caramelwithoutthesalt Every so often, a manga outlives the LN it's based upon. Haganai passed the LN two volumes ago, according to the author's notes.

I might buy manga for LN series that I like, moreso if the art is good.
A nice bonus is that a number of manga adaptations of LNs have bonus text stories at the end, so there's that.

Honestly, it highly depends on how well I consider the manga to be. 95% of the time I won't. But for some rare series, I love their manga adaptation. The Gate manga which I've requested to have the license rescue is super well paced, has fantastic art, and I think the mangaka would have made a better director for the anime.
I enjoy the Sword Art Online Progressive manga (first seven volumes) cause the mangaka went on his own thing and wrote the story switching to having Asuna as the main character rather than Kirito.
Honestly though, it's just super rare that the manga adaptation of something isn't produced by some amateur just trying to earn some experience in the industry.

Before I used to only read manga, but recently I read LNs more in terms of if they are a LN with a manga adaptation. But I buy manga versions of stuff like So I'm a Spider, So What, That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime, or Infinite Dendrogram to show support, and for the most part I also like the way they are handled. It's also nice when manga adaptations like those three I mentioned get short extra stories written by the original authors added in.

I tend to prefer buying whatever the most "complete" version of the series is, which is usually (but not always) the original format.
So if it was a light novel first, then I'd usually go with that, though there are some exceptions where the manga outlived the novels or managed to be a better product than the novels.

Usually I don’t but I sometimes I do if I really love the series or the art is really good
Tearmoon Empire has great expressions and I love the series dearly so it is one of the few that I buy both of
The Apothecary Diaries manga I buy because I like the art but I may not continue to buy it as there are only so many series I can afford to buy
Side note: I prefer to read Unwanted Undead Adventurer in manga form because I find it more palatable and the manga cuts a lot of the dross of the novel

Why does no one look surprised?)I discovered Light Novels by finding mention in a manga I was reading of source material; that it was an adaptation of a novel, that many manga are adaptations of novels, was something I had no clue about.
That's not how it works in the US, after all.
Well, sure, Classics Illustrated if of a certain age, but I'd long since forgotten about those.That my start in anime and manga were works such as Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Mobile Suit Gundam, Dirty Pair &c probably has something to do with this; the US experience was a tad different back in 1988.
Being disconnected from the fandom for decades didn't help any.
So probably five or six years back is when I found out about WNs and LNs, if that long ago.So, um, yes, I would buy manga adaptations of light novels.
Perhaps more to the point, I'll seek out the LN for manga and anime that I've enjoyed. -
I'd also love to see LNs with more illustrations (best of both worlds?)
- the 'advantage' of a manga - you get to see what is described, i.e. a costume/dress/(or lack thereof) or armor/battle scene/fighting pose
- the 'advantage' of a LN - you get more plot- more nuanced character development, more detailed descriptions, more dialog
- the 'advantage' of an anime - you get to see/hear characters 'brought to life' or awesome action scenes - or monsters or whatever
I know I've mentioned it somewhere else in the fora - but I'd love to see/buy LNs with many more illustrations, or even a hybrid volume (every 5th chapter or interludes as manga ?) -- this is why I LOVE/BUY the JNC versions of LNs from JNC - extra art, bonus stories, author or translator notes etc. why give Bezos more money when the JNC edition is better (for less$$) but I digress
I'd love to see more volumes like the Bookworm fan books - the problem - how does it get licensed? how do royalties get paid? ---publishing a LN w/ artwork imported from the manga or an omnibus/collectors edition of a LN is (by definition) a derivative work - and would require an extra/additional license to be compliant with copyrights etc. (and the license holders of the LN and the manga might not be the same entities)because this wouldn't be easy - I believe the buying public would understand/pay the premium $$,

I’m not much of an LN reader, so I only read Manga.
If I like the story premise, then I collect it, I’m not very picky or a harsh critic.
Although there is 1 exception, I do collect the LN’s of “The Irregular at Magic High School”. I wish Yen Press would also license the manga (or some other publisher), but I’ve given up hope. -
I am a big Light Novel reader. I am running out of space. Never got into manga much.

Oh wow. This thread is 3+ years old, but I'm only seeing it now.
I usually prefer to experience a series as the creator intended. So whichever one might be deemed the "source material" would be my first choice typically. Although there are exceptions. That said, I'm not really a fan of comics or manga. I often find the visual information to be too noisy, and I struggle to make sense of who's doing what to who, often having to spend a long time on each panel picking it apart. For this reason, I usually prefer a textual presentation.
Some random thoughts:
- Star Wars was a movie before it was a book. I prefer the movie.
- V For Vendetta was originally a weekly comic. I prefer the movie, which has a much tighter presentation and feels more polished.
- Neverwhere was originally a TV mini-series, and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a series of radio dramas (?). In both cases, I prefer the subsequent books that were like the perfect distillation of their core ideas.
- Most WNs come off as first-drafts of the story, so I tend to prefer the more polished and updated LNs that come after.
- For series that I love, I will purchase the manga adaptation in order to support the author and support the series, but I don't usually like them all that much.
- I can't think of any series that started as a Manga but then was later adapted to an LN, so I don't have that point of comparison.
