Catchup Titles Archive (Updated to March 2024)
-
First post updated. I also added a note about Orphen's hiatus.
===
I've got nothing to read this time around either. Clockwork planet has been on hiatus(?) for quite a few years now so I won't start reading it unless there's news of new volumes coming out. As for the other 3 series, I'm all caught up already.
Rather, I might drop Unwanted Undead with volume 5 because I've picked up a few other series since I started following it. I actually read volume 4 only because the parts for it came out on Saturday. The long monologues in it really bore me and make me sleepy.

July 2019 catchups:
- Clockwork Planet
- Bakarina
- Orphen
- Unwanted Undead
I gotta catch up on Unwanted Undead, so that's good. Once I finish Battle Divas 2, I'll jump into that.
And Orphen, but I kind of want to buy those.
-
I'm surprised Sam found time to update the catchup titles. Not much for me to catch up on this month. Spent a few hours reading instead of playing games, lol.

I've wasted my week on Mario Maker. T_T

So, it's among the books in the Beddhist church library?
-
Looks like JNC will now be making new News threads for all catch up month titles going forward.
Thank you for keep us up to date thus far @Terabyte I salute you.

@rahul-balaggan I think I'll keep this topic anyway, maybe renamed to "Catchups Archive" or something. That way people can look up easily the whole list :)

I'm trying to read Bakarina / All Routes Lead to Doom! and have bounced twice.
Without spoilers, does the MC ever stop being a Homer Simpson level of idiot?
I don't mind lacking common sense, Mile in Abilities Average is often adorable and I loved the first Zoolander, but so far MC just keeps doing stupid things over and over. It's much more annoying than amusing to me.

THATS AN INSULT TO THE GREAT HOMER SIMPSON!!!
Also no, not really
I got tired of it by the end of V2 (still reading it though cause I don’t wanna drop any series I start)
I also got tired of Average Abilities by the end of V2 (same situation)
-
@harmlessdave For me, the appeal is in reading the misadventures of someone who is Clever but not Perceptive. (Plus a healthy dose of The Power of Nice. ^_- )
Comparison with Homer Simpson is kinda instructive, for me, because I don't think they're much alike at all.
Homer is lazy and doesn't think much period, and is a very passive character; he rarely makes things happen, things happen to him instead. He gets things wrong because he can't be bothered to think about them.
Katarina, OTOH, is often thinking about her situation and trying to improve it, making plans and taking action; her problem is that she usually starts from assumptions that are cockeyed or flat-out wrong, so her Clever Plans are answering the wrong problem. Or if they're answering the right question, they do so in an overblown way that isn't what she intended... which she doesn't notice, because she's still fixated on her initial assumptions.
Active vs. passive character, IOW. And for me, the fun is the comedy from watching her plans and actions go out of control in ways she totally wasn't anticipating. :)
(That's why I think the segments from other characters are important; they not only highlight how her assumptions are wrong, they show the kind of chaos her actions cause.)

I think the difference for me between Abilities Average and Doom! is that Mile is smart and in many ways super-competent but clueless about how her actions will be perceived, while in what I've read of volume 1 of Doom! Katarina is average at best, not particularly competent, and even more lacking in common sense and awareness about her actions.
In what I've read of volume one Katarina is a trainwreck of cringe-comedy as she
I don't mind flawed characters, but she doesn't seem to be making any progress in overcoming her flaws or even to recognize that she has them.
-
@harmlessdave I like Average Abilities but I got kinda bored with Bakarina around volume 3. Apart from the story, what killed it for me were the continuous different POVs that kept repeating the same scene over and over. I decided to keep reading it for a while and it got a bit more interesting around the end of volume 4. I'm still considering whether I should drop it or not based on what's gonna happen in volume 5 though.
-
@harmlessdave If you ask me, if you think
is "cringe" instead of adorably hilarious, Bakarina probably isn't for you.
For me, none of the things you mentioned are anywhere near "cringe"; they just show how Katarina doesn't care about conforming to the social norms of noble society.

Yep, different people find different things funny. I can't stand some violence-slapstick comedies others love (Ah My Buddha, Love Hina, Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs) but like other equally violent slapstick like Jason Statham's Crank and Clive Owen's Shoot 'Em Up (he is a wascally wabbit).
The one you list above didn't bother me taken by itself, just as a part of her overall behavior.
-
@harmlessdave Depends on how you define 'competent', I guess. So for example:
So she gets lots of points from me for being proactive, caring, and concerned; and the way the consequences escalated out of control didn't bother me because it fed directly out of her good motivations.
Then reading the events from Keith's viewpoint and seeing how he reacted to what happened put a capper on the incident, showing just how the Law of Unintended Consequences kicked in... to delightful effect, for me.

im guessing realist hero 10 will be out when vol 11 in japan release like vol 9
it will never catch up huh? XD
-
@mvpkost Well, technically, since you can't start translating until the volume is published... this is as "caught up" as you can be.
-
Are you saying that JNC can’t start translating a new volume until the previous volume has been released as an e-book?
Or are you saying JNC can’t start translating till the Japanese Edition has been released?
Cause the Japanese Edition came out in June.
-
@rahul-balaggan I'm saying they can't start translating it until it comes out in Japan. And there may be a lot of it translated already, unofficially.
June is "just" 23 days ago. V9 was just released 2 days ago here.
Are the contracts all in place? Has JNC received the published copies to translate?

Not sure I haven’t been checking Discord much lately (not that Realist Hero’s status necessarily came up in the convo)
