I watched the anime and it seemed nice, but after reading the fan translation I thought the adaptation was horrible lol
After reading the first 4 fan-translated volumes I found out how much content they cut in the anime...The LN doesn't seem to have a good publishing schedule though, which is worrying:
- 2013: three volumes
- 2014: one volume
- 2015: one volume
- 2016: one volume
- 2017: two volumes
But I guess 2 volumes in 2017 might mean the author is picking up the pace again (like at the start).
-
I would really like to see this licensed some day.
-
Haven’t seen the anime but mecha Light Novel? Yes please! I feel like the anime was well received for what it was and this would do well too.
-
I loved this anime but absolutely adored the light novel, despite the numerous problems with the fan translation (seriously needed a better editor, preferably one who had a better understanding of English). I liked the story and characters so much that I bought the light novel in Japanese to use it to mine sentences for my Japanese language studies.

The rumour is that the publisher was seeking $10,000 per volume in licensing fees, which was why nobody has licensed it. Hopefully that's changed by now.
-
@guspaz What is a more typical price?
-
@legitpancake I'm not sure what would be, but take into account that each volume ends up costing 7$ on Amazon. Let's be generous and say that Amazon only takes 1 dollar from that fee, with 6 going back to JNC. You'd need to sell like 1,750 copies just to make a 10k licensing fee back, then there's the translation and edition costs, I'm not exactly sure what's the current cost for Japanese to English translations, but for other languages I've seen a rate of 0.1-0.25 per word. I'll go with Seigensou's volume 1 word count of 63214 words according to the fan translator. That'd mean it would go from 6.3K$ to 15.8K$ for translation alone, let's go midway and say another 10K. That leaves a solid 3.5K sales in order just to make back the investment. I don't think we have definitive sales numbers from any JNC series right?? But going by how Sam has made comments that they'd need at least 3k guaranteed sales to justify a print edition, I'm pretty sure that new series don't make these numbers unless they are insanely popular. And don't get me wrong, I liked Knights & Magic, but it got bashed a lot back when it aired for its pacing.
-
It may be out of date, but Amazon used to pay a 70% royalty on the pre-tax amount, minus a few cents for the delivery fees. As a result, on a $7 book, I'd expect Amazon to take around $2.16 of that.
-
@paulnamida There is also the monthly Subscriptions to take account of. For that, we could take the number of Subscribers and multiply that by 5 to get how much money JNC gets from subscriptions (I did not count the extra cost of premium because I see that as buying one book per month and should be put into a different place).

Crunchyroll is simul-publishing the manga. They have 44 chapters out so far. I’m not finding them bundled into volumes yet. I didn’t even realize a LN was the original, I’d love to pick up that.
-
The 9th volume recently came out in japan a few days ago, really forward to find out more in the story.
-
@kite-xx the best fan version i could find is still on v6 atm.
-
@galactuskahn24 Volumes are slow to come out, but the fan translation is even slower 😋
-
@terabyte agered, most of the fan LN translators ive seen are 99.99 dead. Ie slow af even slower than yen press.
-
For those that might be interested, you can pick up the first 3 volumes in Japanese for 93 yen each at the moment on bookwalker.. http://mpse.jp/bwmail/c.p?02czKBk3RJD

I looked at the latest volume cover for volume 9 and the inserts. May want to avoid doing so.
