when it comes to the Ecchi/Smut Harems you can think of something like To Love Ru (Ecchi) or those Vampire Anime (Smut), where that is the main point or major factor

I kind of like the harem where all / most of the love interests and maybe even the hero perish before the end. "Tragic Harem" I guess. Of course, it's impossible to seek this out without spoiling yourself.

I like when there's one winner too, as long as the competition isn't decided before it even begins (forced best gal, specifically with promotional material like cover 1 focusing on her).

Yeah. I mean, I don't really want to go down that road of spoiling stuff by pointing out series, but it does happen, especially in anime. Sometimes it's the "guy surrounded by many gals but no romance" type battle series, and they all sacrifice themselves to protect him. Other times, it's the "death of the hypotenuse" where maybe the wrong side of the love harem / triangle dies a tragic death out of convenience for the romantic plot. And then there's the end where they all die in some huge sacrifice to protect the world (or maybe they just lose to the villain, though that's rare).

Horror / Death game type stuff often throw in hypotenuse to try and get you to have some cheap emotional feels.

I usually prefer true harems, especially when all the girls are likeable and well developed I'd rather have all of them find their happiness than face rejection and sadness. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy stories when there is only one winner, some stories are better told that way.
Ecchiness is not necessary, but it's a welcome addition if there is.

I like most harems but I prefer it when the harem members get jealous of the other each other and hijinks ensues.
Though I think most of the time whether I like a harem or not depends on the MC. I mean if the MC isn't likable then how am I supposed to believe that all of these girls (and/or guys) like them.
Also I prefer harem members who are more developed plotwise... have more depth as characters. I tend to get less annoyed with those members.
I kind of wish there were more stories where MC chooses only one, but the author shows the alternate endings if they've chose a different member

I like both true harems and solo romance ends. But I definitely prefer the True Harem route, since Best Girl hardly ever wins in solo romance, I mean, so far, in over 10 years of watching seasonal anime, there's only been 1, ONE harem anime that actually ended in a solo romance with my personal best girl. ONE. I'm extremely frustrated with that xD. So yeah, I'd rather get a true harem ening where all the girls get the love they deserve, specially if there's multiple candidates for best girl material.

@shrike_al It's a rather minor one, an adaptation of a Visual Novel, Mashiro-Iro Symphony. I was already used to my girl of choice never winning so I certainly wasn't expecting it to end with the

I almost cried. They were even teasing another route throughout the series so I had already given up. It was a nice surprise. And so far, the only time my #BestGirl won.

I pretty much like all harem stuff. It is kinda like a guilty pleasure except I don't really feel all that guilty about it, so... I'm just into it I guess?

I like ones where interpersonal relationships are a focus and not just between the harem hub and the haremettes. This requires character development. I like Rokujoma and Realist especially for this reason and the lack of it is my major issue with smart phone. I agree with @kairos about MCs. If I cant believe that the girls would actually like the MC I stop reading.

@terrence: I don't know if "WorldEnd" counts as a harem, but it definitely had a sad ending. The 2006 anime TV version of the "Kanon" visual novel had a sad ending. Sad in the sense it was a beautiful ending.

Is there an option for harem where all the girls figure out that the protagonist is a dweeb and ascend together into yuri heaven?

                                      I jest! Don't kill me! :-)

Seriously though, I voted platonic harem. My second choice would be harem where protagonist and one girl marry happily ever after and the other girls pair up just as happy. :-)

I'm rooting for this in Infinite Stratos. The guy sees nothing sexually and he only vaguely remembers his childhood friend who remembers him a lot. He doesn't deserve them! xP

(If there's literally no Yuri in an All-girls school setting in Stratos, I'll actually find that a bit curious; you'd think there'd be one or two Lesbians in the school; the old-school metaphors and mysogynistic chivalry of the hero make me think it's going to be too masculine to feature Yuri though).

I'm really not a fan of harems, reverse or otherwise, but if I had to pick an option from your list which isn't nope it would be the platonic harem - ie not really a harem at all but a mixed gender friendship group. I think the main reason I don't like harems in light novels is because they're often handled badly with some or all of the harem group being barely fleshed out and it bothers me that the time that could be spent giving these characters more depth is lost to stuff like harem infighting and fanservice that goes nowhere. Also from a real world perspective it's kind of shitty for the MC to be stringing on a bunch of people without making some decisions. I guess I'd probably be okay with a well written harem story and/or a much more decisive MC?
