@catstorm Oh there are more.
T. S. Eliot was clearly anti-semitic.
Roald Dahl identified itself as an anti semite (and people still love Charly and the chocolade fabric).
Jack London was racist (he advocated that socialism, which he found to be the ideal form, is only meant for white people)
HP Lovecraft was a racist.
Not that this makes it right. But this makes oneself think about how we perceive authors and their works.
All of these guys are dead afaik. So my dollars aren't going to them directly to fund their hate. I don't know if Roald Dahl has a foundation, but I'm guessing it doesn't fund anti-semite programs? I hope not. xC
Schools that teach these guys should probably broach their nature before / after reading the stories to give context to some of their work. In terms of anti-Semitism, there seems to be a lot of that in turn of the century literature. McTeague and Oliver Twist to name two that I've read with the "Greedy Jew" archetype...

What this world needs is less hate and more forgiveness. On all sides of the equation.
Unfortunately, I could do better at this myself. There are some movies that I can't watch when I see certain actors in them that I can't stomach. It is hard for me to watch because of actions the actors have done in real life when they have never ever apologized; to my knowledge.
It is a fault of mine but it is much easier for me to forgive someone who admits fault and apologizes than someone who never admits fault and ignores their criticism. If I was a better person it wouldn't take as much to forgive someone.
The author has admitted fault, apologized, and offered to make amends by attempting to change the text. I do not like the tweets he made in the past however it appears he isn't trying to dodge responsibility or blame other people.
I also find this slightly ironic how China is mad that Japanese people appear to deny Nanking happened, and this author made references to it actually happening. I know the tweets are what infuriate them the most but the irony is not lost on me.
Also, the book doesn't appear to make it look like the protag is a great guy for doing it because ...

Seems like this is going to get pulled, part 8 of Volume 3 has been put up way ahead of schedule. Most likely put up to pre empt HJ asking to stop work on it.
-
Per Sam, nothing is getting pulled. Not in the short term, at least. v3p8 is being released with the agreement of HJ. For more, wait for Sam's official statement.
-
@sniper_samurai Sam has already talked with Hobby Japan about this. That did not get posted before he chatted with them. He isn't trying to preempt them at all. Once he gets an announcement typed up that Hobby Japan approves, he will make an official announcement.

@the-green-death Ouch. Nanking is a touchy subject among Chinese. I honestly can't think of anything equivalent in American history.
Really? I can think of one.
Pearl Harbor.
Suppose the reference was to Pearl Harbor instead, and the passages and tweets were glorifying how Renya was an ace fighter pilot who bombed PH.
Now imagine what the reaction would be from Americans on Twitter or politicians.
-
@chi-c While I agree you might get a rise out out some people over Pearl Harbor, I didn't want to compare them directly for the following reasons concerning Pearl Harbor:
- The attack was unannounced
- Most of the casualties were military
- There were no war crimes after the attack
- There were far fewer casualties
- Most Americans don't remember it

Good post, agreed on all the book points. I couldn't really figure out the Nanking denial angle (that doesn't seem to be happening... In fact, it blatantly flaunts it with some of the numbers). And the main character definitely seems to be someone who isn't a "good guy / valued member of society" in the story initially.
Except I think he needs to show even more contrition to be forgiven. An "I'm sorry I offended you, I'll remove the offensive stuff so you don't have to see it" isn't really enough. The guy needs to show he has attempted to change his racist beliefs, not hide them. It still won't be enough for some, but it would be something for those willing to forgive. "I'm sorry" aren't magic words that heal everything. They're just a start.
He can't edit his Twitter Tweets to begin with, and he's just going to delete his Twitter (he writes under a pseudonym iirc, so he could hide and pop up somewhere else under another name too... Which definitely doesn't sound like something someone who wants to accept their punishment and seek forgiveness would do; inconvenienced, sure, but he's basically escaping and leaving behind his past identity in the wake of this).
-
@paul-nebeling I'm not sure most of those detaiks matter. Its not really an argument about the nuance of Nanking vs Pearl habour. I'm mostly trying to help people understand why there's such a big reaction, since I see lots of people going "I don't really get it why are the Chinese so sensitive"
What I am saying is that if the author had made racist comments about America, and glorified his protagonist by implying he killed lots of Americans (war 2), Americans will be very upset. There would for sure be death threats and trolling and campaigns for boycotts.
To use a more extreme analogy: if this was a German author, and the author implied Renya served the Nazis army in Ww2, and he got reincarnated because he killed thousands of people in Ww2. Proably soldiers but maybe pows who knows. And then the author tweeted some anti semetic stuff.
That would not go over well at all.
-
The main issue isn't even in the LN, honestly. The LN has the reference to 3712 people dead and that he died at 94. But when you tie it in with some stuff in the WN, mix it with the numbers, it just looks incredibly creepy in a bad way.
Renya starts to look like at best an expy for Asaka Yasuhiko, who basically managed the Nanking massacre, and got no punishment. A lot of details match up.
This would be like someone writing totally !Hitler getting reincarnated to do hijinx, and publishing it in Germany. That shit just is not gonna fly.
This isn't 'EVIL SJW'.

@chi-c Or he'd get elected president. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@terrence We will just have to agree to disagree on your points.
I believe what he has done is enough. How many people never even apologize and try to shift blame? He didn't, he admitted it. That is enough for me for something he did several years ago.
For others, that isn't enough. That's their decision. The problem is people will claim he hasn't changed when we don't have proof he hasn't changed. I don't like when people go for the jugular and try to ruin individuals for their mistakes. This guy still needs to make money so he can eat and pay for a place to live. You are free to never buy something of his or support him ever, and I have no problem with that whatsoever.
After seeing this happen can you blame him for wanting to just delete his twitter account? Of course he could just create a new twitter account with a new name. Will he? We don't know and I don't want to judge someone for something that I have no evidence they have done or will do. I don't want to accuse someone for something they could do because then I would never ever forgive someone ever because there is a lot of stuff someone could do.
I will also admit I am guilty of a certain level of hypocrisy because I won't watch certain movies because of certain actors in it and that makes me guilty of trying to make a movie fail because of an actor in the movie. However, I don't go around telling others to not watch a movie or try to convince other people to not watch those movies or try to make people feel guilty for watching their movies. Nor have I gone after the movie producers and other people who hire those people and pressured them to fire them. Last of all, I have never made death threats to those actors or anyone associated with those actors.

@chi-c I am a citizen of the USA. I have no problem with the idea Renya being an ace fighter pilot who bombed Pearl Harbor. Its a story, not real life. I have forgiven the Japanese for attacking us and most of the people in Japan alive today have no responsibility for what their ancestors did. Their only responsibility is to learn from their ancestors mistakes and not do it again.
-
@malloc said in [New Life+] Young Again in Another World Light Novel Shipments Halted:

To preface, I largely agree you. However, if a Japanese author writes about a Pearl Harbor pilot who survives, never gets punished, then ends up becoming a hero and saving the world, you can imagine how that's a bit tone deaf and does not display remorse or learning from their ancestors, yeah?
-
@chi-c Oh, I get why the Chinese are sensitive about it. My initial comment that there was no
equivalent event in American history, Pearl Harbor or 9/11 not withstanding, is one I will stand behind. -
@chi-c Pretty sure no one here in the US would equate Pearl Harbor with Nanking. One was a military operation while the other one was a massacre. Though I could imagine the outrage here if the protag was hinted to be a former SS officer.
